Are Galápagos iguanas endangered, and what conservation protections apply?

There is no single conservation status for “the Galápagos iguana.” The archipelago has four endemic iguana species, and the available species-level assessments differ. The marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is listed as Vulnerable in the cited Galápagos Conservancy summary, while the pink land iguana (Conolophus marthae) is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. The pale and yellow land iguanas require their own current assessments rather than being assigned one category by association.

Protection combines Ecuador’s Galápagos National Park, international trade controls under CITES Appendix II, invasive-species programs, monitoring, captive breeding, reintroduction, a dedicated 2022–2027 recovery plan for the pink land iguana, and wildlife-trafficking enforcement.

Four species share the Galápagos name

“Galápagos iguana” is a group term, not the name of one species. Galápagos Conservancy identified four species in its 2022 material:

  • Marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus)
  • Pale land iguana (Conolophus pallidus)
  • Yellow land iguana (Conolophus subcristatus)
  • Pink land iguana (Conolophus marthae)

They live on different islands and use different habitats. Marine iguanas forage in coastal waters and on shore, while land iguanas depend on terrestrial areas that can be affected by introduced predators, habitat changes and food availability. That separation matters: an island-wide statement such as “all Galápagos iguanas are Endangered” would be inaccurate unless it cited a current assessment for every species.

Pink land iguana Conolophus marthae Critically Endangered (IUCN resource) An estimated 211 individuals on nearly 1,000 acres of Wolf Volcano, Isabela Island (Galápagos Conservancy project page accessed 2026) Restricted distribution, invasive black rats and feral cats, and vulnerability to environmental and demographic shocks; covered by a dedicated 2022–2027 recovery plan.

The “not stated” entries are deliberate. A missing category in these sources is not evidence that a species is safe, nor is it permission to transfer another species’ Red List category to it.

Why the pink land iguana is considered Critically Endangered

The IUCN resource for the species states: “The Galápagos pink land iguana (Conolophus marthae) is categorised as Critically Endangered.” Its known distribution is exceptionally restricted. Galápagos Conservancy reports an estimated 211 individuals and a range of nearly 1,000 acres on Wolf Volcano on Isabela Island. That number is an organizational estimate from a project page accessed in 2026, not a permanent census total; populations can change as surveys improve or conditions change.

A very small population concentrated in one volcanic area is exposed to several kinds of risk at once. The IUCN material identifies invasive black rats and feral cats as likely predators. A disease event, severe weather episode, decline in food plants or other environmental shock could affect a large share of the global population because there is little geographic redundancy. Small populations also face demographic problems: the loss of a relatively small number of breeding animals can alter the balance between generations and make recovery slower.

What the Vulnerable marine-iguana listing means

The marine iguana is described as IUCN Vulnerable in the cited Galápagos Conservancy summary. “Vulnerable” is a species-level risk category, not a declaration that every colony is declining at the same rate or that every island population faces identical pressures. Marine iguanas are protected inside the Galápagos protected-area system, but protection does not eliminate risks such as introduced predators, human disturbance or illegal collection.

A concrete enforcement case illustrates why protection includes more than habitat designation. In May 2026, Ecuador reported returning 10 rescued marine iguanas to Galápagos after an alleged illegal-trafficking case. The return followed technical, veterinary, sanitary and judicial protocols. The event demonstrates that authorities treat possession and transport as wildlife-protection matters requiring quarantine and official clearance, rather than simply releasing animals wherever they are found.

Why one label cannot describe all four species

Different islands and habitats

The four species are endemic to the Galápagos but are not one interchangeable population. A threat affecting coastal feeding areas may matter most to marine iguanas, while introduced predators around a restricted volcano can be decisive for a land-iguana species. Conservation planning therefore uses species, island and site information instead of relying on the archipelago’s overall reputation for protection.

Restricted distribution magnifies local events

The pink land iguana’s concentration on Wolf Volcano is the clearest example. When nearly the entire known population occupies one small area, a local event can become a global species risk. This is why the IUCN plan emphasizes a comprehensive recovery program rather than a single action such as fencing or captive breeding.

Invasive predators create continuing pressure

The IUCN material identifies black rats and feral cats as likely predators of pink land iguanas. Broader land-iguana assessments also document invasive-species pressure and historical local losses. Goats, cats, rats, dogs and other introduced animals are therefore targets of Galápagos management programs where eradication or control is feasible.

Which legal and institutional protections apply?

Galápagos National Park

Ecuador created the Galápagos National Park through Executive Decree 17 in 1959. The Galápagos National Park Directorate says the decree protected 97% of the islands’ terrestrial area as national park. This is a land-management foundation for iguanas: it gives the park authority responsibility for protected habitat, species management and enforcement across most island territory.

The IUCN resource records land-iguana populations within the Galápagos National Park and the Galápagos National Marine Reserve. The protected-area designation does not mean every location is untouched or every threat is solved. It provides the legal and administrative framework in which predator control, monitoring, restoration and visitor rules can operate.

CITES Appendix II

All Galápagos land iguanas in the genus Conolophus are included in CITES Appendix II. Appendix II controls international trade so that use does not threaten a species’ survival. It is not the same as an absolute Appendix I prohibition, and it does not turn an international shipment into a lawful one automatically.

Anyone considering purchase, export, import or transport must satisfy the requirements of the countries involved, including permits and evidence of legal acquisition where required. CITES also does not replace Ecuadorian protected-area rules or domestic wildlife law. A person should not assume that a CITES listing creates a legal route to keep a Galápagos iguana as a pet.

UNESCO designations

The IUCN records land-iguana populations within the Galápagos Islands Man and the Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site. These designations add international recognition and conservation governance, but they work alongside Ecuador’s national park authority rather than replacing it. Day-to-day species actions still depend on the Galápagos National Park Directorate and national environmental agencies.

Invasive-species management

Park programs eradicate or control invasive goats, cats, rats, dogs and other threats where feasible. The practical approach varies by island and target: a program may remove an introduced population, suppress it to reduce predation, or maintain biosecurity to prevent reinvasion. Predator control is especially important for land iguanas with small or localized populations.

Monitoring, captive breeding and reintroduction

Documented conservation actions include systematic monitoring, captive breeding and reintroduction or repatriation after local losses. Monitoring supplies the evidence needed to detect population change, locate breeding areas and measure whether predator control is working. Captive breeding can provide animals for release when wild populations have disappeared or fallen dangerously low, but it does not substitute for protecting food, nesting sites and predator-free habitat.

A dedicated pink-iguana recovery plan

The 2022–2027 conservation-management plan for Conolophus marthae sets a species-specific framework. Its stated vision is long-term survival in the wild, and its objective is a comprehensive recovery program. A dedicated plan matters because the pink land iguana’s tiny, concentrated population needs different priorities from a widely distributed species.

Trafficking enforcement and biosecurity

The May 2026 return of 10 marine iguanas shows how authorities combine enforcement with animal-health safeguards. Technical, veterinary and sanitary checks reduce the chance that a confiscated or rescued animal introduces disease or is released in an unsuitable place. Judicial protocols preserve the evidence and legal process surrounding an alleged trafficking case.

How conservation protection works in practice

  1. Identify the species and site. Rangers and scientists first determine whether an animal is a marine, pale, yellow or pink land iguana and record the island or locality. Species-level identification prevents a generic “Galápagos iguana” label from hiding different risks.
  2. Protect the habitat. The national park and marine reserve provide the jurisdiction for managing terrestrial and coastal areas. The park authority can apply site rules, supervise field work and restrict activities that threaten wildlife.
  3. Reduce introduced threats. Invasive goats, cats, rats, dogs and other species are eradicated or controlled where feasible. For pink land iguanas, black rats and feral cats are identified as likely predators.
  4. Measure the population. Systematic monitoring tracks presence, reproduction, survival and changes in distribution. It also tests whether an intervention is producing a measurable benefit.
  5. Rebuild depleted populations. Captive breeding, reintroduction or repatriation may be used after local losses or severe declines. Releases require technical and health protocols so that conservation does not spread disease or move animals into unsuitable habitat.
  6. Control movement and trade. CITES Appendix II requirements apply to international trade in Conolophus land iguanas. Suspected illegal removal can trigger seizure, veterinary assessment, quarantine and judicial procedures, as illustrated by the 2026 marine-iguana case.

Can you legally own a Galápagos iguana?

There is no safe general answer that “CITES Appendix II makes ownership legal.” Appendix II regulates international trade; it does not grant permission to capture an animal in the Galápagos, remove it from the national park or import it without the required permits. Domestic Ecuadorian law, Galápagos protected-area rules and the law of the destination country may impose additional restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, a purported captive-bred or imported Galápagos iguana should be treated as a high-risk wildlife transaction. Before any purchase or shipment, a person would need written confirmation from the relevant wildlife and CITES authorities, a documented legal origin and compliance with transport and animal-health requirements. Without that documentation, possession or movement could contribute to trafficking even if a seller claims the animal is “legal.”

How to read population figures and Red List categories

The 211 figure is an estimate, not a fixed count

The estimate of 211 pink land iguanas comes from Galápagos Conservancy’s project page, accessed in 2026, and is paired with a range of nearly 1,000 acres on Wolf Volcano. It should be reported with its source and date context. A later survey could revise the estimate upward or downward without changing the species’ basic conservation concern.

Categories belong to species assessments

“Critically Endangered” applies to the pink land iguana in the cited IUCN resource. “Vulnerable” applies to the marine iguana in the cited Galápagos Conservancy summary. The pale and yellow land iguanas should not be assigned either category without a current species-level assessment. Conservation urgency can still be high when a category is not established in the material available here.

What visitors and residents can do without increasing risk

  • Do not touch, feed, buy, collect or transport an iguana or any part of one.
  • Follow Galápagos National Park instructions and keep activities within authorized areas.
  • Never move plants, animals, food or soil between islands unless authorities explicitly authorize and inspect the movement; biosecurity prevents invasive species from spreading.
  • Report suspected wildlife trafficking to the relevant Ecuadorian authorities rather than attempting a private rescue or release.
  • When sharing conservation information, name the species and the date of the estimate or assessment so that a statement about one iguana is not mistakenly applied to all four.

The most accurate answer is therefore species-specific: the pink land iguana is Critically Endangered, the marine iguana is Vulnerable in the cited summary, and the available evidence does not justify assigning one category to all four Galápagos iguanas. Their protection rests on Ecuador’s national park and marine reserve, international trade controls, invasive-species management, monitoring, breeding and reintroduction, focused recovery planning and active enforcement against illegal removal.
