Foldable phones are durable enough for normal daily folding, but they are less tolerant of drops, grit, pressure and screen abuse than conventional slab phones. The key distinction is between fold-cycle endurance—how many open-and-close movements a mechanism survives in controlled testing—and resistance to accidental damage in everyday use.

A crease is usually a normal feature of a flexible display, not an immediate failure. The inner screen and hinge remain the vulnerable areas. Careful handling, a model-specific case and prompt attention to bubbles, cracks, lines, grinding or a phone that will not open flat can make a substantial difference.

What “durable” means for a foldable phone

Durability has two separate parts:

  • Mechanical endurance: whether the hinge and flexible display can open and close repeatedly.
  • Accidental-damage resistance: whether the phone survives a drop, grit in the hinge, a fingernail pressed into the inner panel, liquid exposure or pressure while folded.

A phone can pass a very large folding test and still be damaged by one bad drop or a grain of sand. Published cycle figures are therefore useful for judging the basic mechanism, but they are not a promised service life or an independent failure rate for every foldable model.

How many times can you fold a foldable phone?

Published cycle figures

Device or component Published result Who reported it and when What the figure means
Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 mechanisms 200,000 average folding and unfolding cycles Samsung, 2026 A controlled average for the mechanisms, not a guarantee for a particular owner.
Samsung foldable OLED panel 500,000 folds Samsung Display, July 22, 2025 A panel durability test in laboratory conditions; it does not reproduce drops, grit, pressure or temperature swings.

To put 200,000 cycles in perspective, a purely mathematical schedule of 100 complete open-and-close cycles per day would reach that number in about 5.5 years. That calculation is not a lifespan prediction: real use includes impacts, particles, uneven pressure, heat, cold and manufacturing variation. Most people also do not perform 100 complete cycles every day.

Why a cycle test cannot predict your phone’s life

  • Test rigs normally apply a repeatable movement, unlike a phone being opened at different angles or twisted in one hand.
  • Laboratory tests do not represent a fall onto a corner, a key pressed against the inner panel or sand entering the hinge.
  • A mechanism can keep moving while a screen protector, adhesive layer or display connector has already been damaged.
  • “Average” describes the reported test population or method, not a minimum guaranteed count for every handset.

Use cycle numbers as evidence that the design is intended for repeated daily folding. Do not use them as permission to force a stiff hinge or as proof that a used phone has years of life remaining.

Is the crease normal, and does it get worse?

Flexible OLED panels need to bend. The visible line where the display folds is normally part of that construction. Samsung’s support guidance says the crease on the unfolded Galaxy Z Fold5 is a normal characteristic of its flexible Ultra Thin Glass design, not a defect.

Changes that can be normal

  • The crease is visible at certain angles or under bright light.
  • You can feel a shallow ridge when swiping across the fold.
  • The line’s visibility varies with viewing angle, brightness and the screen’s background.

Changes that need service attention

  • The crease develops a crack, split, bubble or lifting layer.
  • Black spots, colored lines, flickering or touch dead zones appear near the fold.
  • The display separates from its protective film or begins making a visible bulge.
  • The phone no longer opens flat, or the hinge movement becomes uneven.

Do not press hard on the crease to flatten it. Force can damage the flexible layers beneath the surface and turn a cosmetic concern into a display failure.

Why the inner screen is the weak point

The inner display has flexible layers and a protective surface designed to bend. It is not equivalent to the hardened glass used on many conventional phones. Fingernails, keys, coins and other sharp or concentrated objects can scratch or puncture it. Pressure from a pen, a tool, a child’s toy or an object trapped between the folded halves can also cause permanent marks.

Habits that reduce screen damage

  • Use a fingertip rather than a fingernail when tapping or swiping.
  • Keep keys, coins and grit away from the open display.
  • Inspect both halves before closing the phone; remove anything that could be trapped inside.
  • Never put a card, cleaning cloth, stylus or other object between the screens unless the manufacturer specifically designed the accessory for that model.
  • Do not remove the factory inner screen protector yourself. A replacement should come from an authorized service channel or a provider approved for the model.

A protector that is scratched or lifting does not automatically mean the flexible panel underneath has failed, but peeling, bubbles or debris under it should be assessed rather than picked at.

Can dust or sand break the hinge?

It can. A foldable hinge is a complex moving assembly with clearances that allow the phone to open, close and absorb some shock. Samsung describes its Flex Hinge as an assembly built around movement and shock absorption, but those spaces also create places where foreign material can interfere.

Warning signs of hinge contamination or damage

  • Crunching, grinding or clicking that was not present before.
  • Stiffness, sticking or a hinge that stops at an unusual angle.
  • The two halves no longer align or the phone will not open flat.
  • New gaps, scraping sounds or visible particles around the hinge.

Do not force the phone through resistance, shake it aggressively or insert a pin into the hinge. Those actions can drive grit deeper or damage seals and cables. Close the phone normally, keep it away from beaches, dusty work areas and pockets containing loose debris, and arrange authorized service if the movement changes.

Water and dust resistance vary by model

Never assume that one foldable’s rating applies to another. Samsung’s care information lists IPX8 on some older foldables and IP48 on newer models. The “X” means the cited rating does not provide a dust-protection class for that product; the “4” in IP48 indicates protection against solid objects of a specified size, not immunity to fine sand.

For the Galaxy Z Fold6, Samsung describes an IP48 test involving fresh water up to 5 feet deep for 30 minutes. That is a laboratory test under stated conditions, not a recommendation to swim with the phone. Salt water, chlorinated water, soap, high-pressure spray and impact damage can create risks that a rating does not cover.

An ingress rating also says nothing about whether a drop has bent the frame or compromised a seal. After any significant impact or liquid exposure, watch for charging problems, fogging, touch errors and display abnormalities, and follow the manufacturer’s drying and service guidance.

What usually causes real-world failure?

Drops and torsion

A drop can transfer force into the hinge, frame or display layers even when the outer glass looks intact. Landing on a corner can twist the two halves and prevent a flat opening. Do not test a suspicious hinge by repeatedly opening and closing it; document the symptom and seek service.

Pressure while folded

Sitting on the phone, placing it under a heavy laptop or squeezing it in a crowded bag can stress the hinge and the inner panel. The folded position protects the display from casual scratches but does not make the device crush-proof.

Heat, cold and contamination

Extreme temperatures can affect adhesives, battery behavior and display response. Grit combined with repeated movement acts like an abrasive. Keep the phone clean and within the operating conditions specified for its exact model.

Are foldable phones expensive or difficult to repair?

Repairs are often more involved than on a conventional phone because the display, hinge, thin cables and layered adhesives are integrated into a compact assembly. iFixit describes foldable repairs as challenging because of that complexity and notes that official parts and instructions are not consistently available.

The final cost depends on the model, country, part availability, labor and the cause of damage. A cracked outer panel, a damaged inner display and a contaminated hinge are different jobs. A screen-protector replacement may be far less involved than replacing the flexible display assembly, but only an authorized provider can determine what has failed.

Warranty and service issues to check

  • Whether accidental damage is excluded from the standard warranty.
  • Whether removing the factory protector yourself affects coverage.
  • Whether work by an unauthorized provider affects warranty eligibility.
  • What service centers, replacement parts and turnaround times exist in your country.
  • Whether the exact hinge or screen symptom is covered under the model’s terms.

Photograph the phone’s condition, note when the problem began and stop using it if the display is lifting, cracked or producing heat. Do not continue folding a phone that no longer opens normally.

What to compare before buying a foldable

Look beyond the headline cycle count. Use this checklist when comparing models:

  • Inner-screen protection: Ask how the manufacturer describes scratch and pressure resistance, and how the factory protector is replaced.
  • Hinge construction: Check how the hinge handles movement and whether its design limits debris entry.
  • Exact IP rating: Confirm the rating for the precise model and understand what it does not cover.
  • Crease visibility: Review the display in person if the line’s appearance matters to you.
  • Test conditions: Read whether a published cycle figure is for a complete phone or only a panel, and whether it is an average or a single demonstration.
  • Service availability: Verify authorized repair locations, parts access and protector-replacement policy in your country.
  • Protection accessories: Price a model-specific protective case for a foldable phone, preferably one with hinge coverage, and confirm exact compatibility.

A high cycle number is valuable evidence of mechanical design effort, but convenient service and sensible protection may matter more to an owner who keeps a phone for several years.

Daily care checklist

  1. Open and close the phone with a normal, centered motion; never force the hinge past its stopping point.
  2. Keep sand, grit and loose particles away from the hinge and inner display.
  3. Check both screen halves before closing so nothing is trapped between them.
  4. Use a case made for the exact model, ideally with hinge protection that does not obstruct movement.
  5. Keep fingernails, keys, coins and sharp objects off the inner screen.
  6. Leave the factory inner protector in place unless an authorized provider replaces it.
  7. Keep liquids within the exact limits of the model’s ingress rating and avoid salt or chlorinated water.
  8. Arrange service if you see bubbles, cracks, flickering, lines, touch failures, grinding or a phone that will not open flat.

Quick diagnosis: symptom and next action

Symptom Most useful first action
Visible crease with normal display and hinge operation Treat it as a normal flexible-display characteristic; monitor it without pressing the fold.
Protector bubble, lifting edge or peeling layer Stop picking at it and ask an authorized provider about replacement.
Crack, black spot, colored line, flicker or dead touch area Back up data if possible, minimize folding and arrange service.
Crunching, grinding, stiffness or failure to open flat Do not force or probe the hinge; seek authorized inspection.
Liquid exposure followed by charging or display problems Stop charging, follow the model’s drying guidance and contact service.

Bottom line

Foldable phones are not fragile novelties, but they demand more careful ownership than slab phones. Controlled tests report 200,000 average mechanism cycles for certain Samsung models and 500,000 folds for a Samsung Display panel, while everyday failures are more likely to involve drops, grit, pressure, protector damage or a compromised hinge. Expect a visible crease, protect the inner screen, keep debris out of the hinge, verify the exact water-and-dust rating and know where authorized service is available before you buy.
