Yes—current foldable phones are generally durable enough for normal daily use. Their weak points are different from those of conventional phones: a mechanical hinge can collect abrasive grit, the flexible inner display is softer than ordinary cover glass, and water resistance is a controlled laboratory rating rather than waterproofing. With sensible handling and the right service expectations, a foldable can be a practical long-term phone.
What “durable enough” means for a foldable phone
Durability is not one specification. It is the combined ability of the hinge, flexible display, protective film, outer glass, seals and frame to survive the way you use the phone. A device that tolerates thousands of opening cycles may still be damaged by a grain of sand trapped between the panels. A phone with an IP water rating may still suffer liquid damage after a drop or repair has compromised its seals.

Manufacturers publish controlled tests, not a guaranteed service life or a field failure rate. Samsung’s 2024 Business Insights statement says Galaxy Z Fold6 is “tested and verified for at least 200,000 folds or 10 years of average use.” Samsung’s earlier Fold3 and Flip3 guidance also described more than 200,000 folds, while noting that testing occurred under specified temperature conditions and was not guaranteed in other conditions. At 100 openings per day, 200,000 cycles works out to about 5.5 years, but that calculation is an indicator rather than a promise.
No independent, portfolio-wide failure-rate statistic establishes how often all foldables fail. Published cycle counts should therefore be read as evidence that the mechanism was engineered for repeated use, not as a warranty covering every owner, climate or accident.

How long will the hinge last?
What the cycle number measures
A folding hinge is a wear component. A cycle normally means opening and closing the device once, and a laboratory rig can repeat that motion under controlled conditions. Real phones encounter temperature changes, pocket lint, sand, drops, uneven force and objects caught between the halves. Those factors are outside the meaning of a headline cycle count.

Normal wear versus a service problem
A visible crease, a slight change in opening resistance or a hinge that does not feel perfectly new is not automatically a failure. The following symptoms are more concerning:
- Grinding, crunching or repeated clicking that was not present before.
- A phone that suddenly will not open flat or stops at an unusual angle.
- Sudden looseness, asymmetry or a hinge that moves without controlled resistance.
- Lines, black spots, flicker or touch problems on the inner display after a hinge event.
Do not force the phone flat or repeatedly cycle it to “test” the hinge. Close it gently, keep pressure off the inner panel and arrange authorized service if these symptoms appear.

Flexible OLED is not ordinary cover glass
The inner panel uses flexible OLED layers and a factory-applied protective film. Google’s Pixel safety guidance states: “Flexible screens are softer than traditional screens, so avoid contact with sand, crumbs, fingernails and sharp objects.” A fingernail, grit particle or key that would merely mark conventional glass can scratch the film or damage the display stack.

Samsung’s care guidance warns that cards, coins, keys and other objects left between the halves can damage the main display when the phone closes. Check both surfaces before closing, especially after using the phone on a beach, in a workshop, around food or in a bag with loose objects.
Do not peel off the factory protector
The pre-installed film is part of the phone’s intended protection. Do not lift a corner, peel it away or replace it with an unapproved third-party protector. Google specifically advises leaving the factory protector in place and not applying a third-party screen protector. If the film bubbles, lifts at an edge or is scratched through, use the manufacturer’s authorized replacement process. A damaged replaceable film does not automatically mean the underlying OLED has failed, but continuing to press on a lifted edge can make the problem worse.
Outer screen and inner screen have different risks
The cover display on a folded phone is generally protected like a conventional smartphone screen, while the inner display prioritizes flexibility. Use the same caution with both, but reserve the strictest rules—no grit, no sharp objects and no pressure at the crease—for the inner panel. Never put a phone, stylus, card or coin in the closing gap unless the manufacturer explicitly designed a compartment for it.

Water resistance: read the exact IP code
Water ratings describe a test, not a waterproof guarantee. Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold guide says the phone is designed to meet IPX8 under IEC 60529 when it leaves the factory, but “it is not waterproof.” The same guidance warns that resistance can diminish after wear, repair, disassembly, drops or other damage, and that liquid damage voids the limited warranty.

The first digit (or X) concerns solids; the second digit concerns water. IPX8 means the maker has not claimed a dust rating for that model. IP48 adds protection against particles larger than 1 mm, but still does not mean every fine dust or sand particle is excluded. Ratings also vary by generation and region, so use the exact model’s manual rather than assuming one foldable’s rating applies to another.
Rain is different from deliberate immersion
Light rain is generally less demanding than a shower, pool or ocean, but an IP rating does not cover every liquid or pressure condition. Do not swim with a foldable, use it in a shower, expose it to salt water or deliberately pressure-test it. Salt, chlorine, soap and other chemicals can attack seals or leave conductive residue even when fresh water was part of the laboratory test.
If the phone gets wet, wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth, let the exterior and charging port dry completely and do not charge it while moisture may remain. A drop, opened chassis or repair can reduce sealing even if the phone still looks intact.

Dust and sand are often the bigger everyday threat
Hinge gaps and flexible displays create places where abrasive particles can do disproportionate harm. Google labels Pixel Fold devices as not dust resistant. Motorola warns that dust can reduce hinge life or damage the display. Samsung cautions that small particles may scratch or dent screens and affect hinge performance even where an IP rating exists.

A practical debris routine
- Before closing: visually check the inner display, crease and bezel for sand, crumbs, hair or grit.
- After a dusty outing: keep the phone open and gently remove loose particles with a clean, soft method recommended by the manufacturer. Do not push grit into the hinge or scrape the panel with a card.
- During beach, trail or workshop use: keep the phone in a closed, model-specific case or a clean pocket separate from keys and loose debris. Avoid placing it directly on sand.
- When cleaning: follow the model’s manual. Do not pour liquid into the hinge, insert tools, use abrasive powders or blast debris deeper into a gap.
- Before storage: close only when both halves are clean, and make sure the case does not press on the hinge or prevent complete closure.
How to compare foldables before buying
Look beyond the largest cycle number. The ownership system—screen policy, seals, service and accessories—determines whether a particular model suits your routine.

Repair pricing and availability are location- and model-specific, so verify them before purchase rather than relying on a generic foldable-phone estimate. Confirm that a case leaves the hinge free to move and does not force the phone shut unevenly.

- Keep grit off the inner display before every closure.
- Keep fingernails, pens, keys and other sharp objects away from the flexible panel.
- Never close the phone on a card, coin, cable, crumb or other object.
- Leave the factory screen protector installed unless an authorized service center replaces it.
- Use a model-specific case that does not press on the hinge or interfere with opening and closing.
- Treat water resistance as temporary and model-specific, not as permission to swim, shower or use salt water.
- Keep sand and dust away from the hinge, especially at beaches, construction sites and trails.
- Dry the phone fully before charging after any exposure to moisture.
What to do when something goes wrong
The hinge starts grinding or will not open flat
Stop forcing it and avoid repeated opening cycles. Keep the phone closed if that position is safe, protect it from further grit and contact authorized service. A grinding sound can indicate contamination or mechanical damage that home tools may worsen.

Lines, flicker or touch failures appear
Back up important data if the phone remains usable, avoid pressing the affected area and arrange service. Display artifacts after a drop, trapped object or hinge event should be treated as possible panel damage rather than cosmetic wear.
The phone gets wet
Move it away from the liquid, wipe the exterior, leave it unconnected until fully dry and avoid introducing heat or tools into the hinge. If the liquid was salt water, chlorinated water, a drink or a cleaning chemical, seek service even if the phone appears to work; the published fresh-water tests do not establish safety for those liquids.
Who should—and should not—buy a foldable?
A foldable is a reasonable everyday choice if you can keep the inner screen clean, accept that the factory film is not a user-serviceable accessory and have access to authorized repairs. It is a poor fit if your routine regularly involves loose sand, metal filings, heavy rain, swimming, rough glove use or situations where the phone will be crushed in a bag. Conventional slab phones remove the hinge and flexible inner panel from the risk equation, while a foldable trades that simplicity for a larger screen or compact folded form.
The most accurate expectation is neither “fragile novelty” nor “indestructible phone.” Current models are engineered for years of ordinary opening and closing, but their durability depends heavily on debris control, gentle screen handling, correct interpretation of IP ratings and a realistic repair plan.
