Driver-monitoring cameras (DMS) in Indian electric SUVs are conditionally privacy-safe, not automatically private. The decisive questions are whether the camera processes images inside the vehicle, whether clips are stored, whether any data leaves the car, who can access it, how long it is retained, and whether occupants have a real way to disable or cover it without undermining safety systems.
Published materials illustrate why you must check the exact model, trim, software version and market notice. BYD says its in-vehicle cameras process data locally and that its DMS camera may have a manually operated physical cover switch. The Mahindra BE 6 manual documents a 5-megapixel RGB-IR cabin camera, event-triggered Secure360 recording and telematics transmission for several purposes. Tata Passenger Electric Mobility’s privacy policy permits sharing within Tata Group companies and with contracted vendors under stated controls, but does not by itself say that every camera stream is stored or shared.

What a driver-monitoring camera does—and what it does not prove
A DMS camera watches the driver’s face, eyes, head position or posture to support functions such as fatigue and distraction warnings. It may also be part of occupant monitoring or emergency features. A camera being active for real-time safety analysis does not prove that a video file is being recorded, uploaded or retained.

- Capture: what the sensor sees, and whether it covers only the driver or other occupants.
- Processing: whether software extracts an alert locally or sends raw images elsewhere.
- Storage: whether stills, video or derived biometric information is written to vehicle memory, removable media or a cloud account.
- Transmission: whether telematics, a phone app, roadside service or another connected service receives the data.
- Access and sharing: which employees, affiliates, vendors, police authorities or other parties can obtain it.
- Control: whether occupants can see an activity indicator, close a physical shutter, disable a feature or withdraw a consent.
“The camera is not recording” is therefore an incomplete answer unless the manufacturer explains processing, storage and transmission for the exact vehicle configuration.

What Indian electric-SUV makers publish
BYD: local processing and a physical cover switch
BYD’s India data-privacy page states that “Cameras inside and outside your vehicle process data locally at the vehicle end.” It also says, “we have equipped our DMS camera with a physical cover switch that can be manually operated by vehicle occupants to prevent any potential information leakage.” That is a meaningful privacy control: a shutter can block optical capture rather than relying only on a software setting.
The same page says the panoramic camera does not involve storing captured data and collects real-time information on road conditions when used. This statement concerns the panoramic camera; it should not be generalized to every interior camera, recording mode or model. BYD repeatedly directs owners to the specific vehicle version and instruction manual, so the presence, location and behavior of a cover switch can vary by model, trim or market.
Local processing reduces the need to send raw cabin imagery to a server, but it does not answer every question. A vehicle can still store derived alerts, transmit other telematics or share account information. Confirm what the manual calls the DMS, what indicator appears when it is active and whether any connected service changes retention.

Mahindra BE 6: a documented cabin camera, Secure360 and telematics
The 2026 Mahindra BE 6 owner manual identifies Eyedentity as the Driver and Occupant Monitoring System (DOMS), powered by a 5-megapixel RGB-Infrared camera inside the cabin. RGB-IR hardware can operate across lighting conditions, which is useful for safety monitoring but also means the sensor is designed to observe occupants more reliably than an ordinary visible-light webcam.
The manual separately describes Secure360. It says the feature automatically starts camera recording when abnormal activity is detected in the surrounding area, and that recorded videos can be viewed through the vehicle system. This is event-triggered security recording, not proof that the DMS continuously saves a driver’s face. The manual does not establish a universal retention period in the material available here, so ask where clips are stored, how many can remain and what action deletes them.
Mahindra’s manual says telematics modules may transmit vehicle information wirelessly to Mahindra. Listed purposes include telematics services, troubleshooting, quality and performance evaluation, analysis and research with partners, legal defence and judicial requests. The wording establishes a connected data channel and broad purposes; it does not, by itself, establish that every raw DMS frame is uploaded. Ask specifically whether cabin images, event clips or only diagnostic metadata leave the vehicle.

The manual says Mahindra does not disclose recorded data except in circumstances including owner agreement, an official police or judicial request, legal defence, a court order, research using non-identifying details, or disclosure to affiliates and information-system or data-management providers. It also states that Mahindra does not record or store vehicle-specific GPS history except the location of a crash, according to the stated policy. That GPS statement is separate from camera footage and should not be read as a promise that video has the same retention rule.

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility’s privacy policy allows personal data to be shared within Tata Group companies and with third-party providers. It describes security controls, employee and contractor training and vendor-security reviews, and is governed by Indian law. Those controls are relevant to connected-vehicle privacy, but the policy is not a blanket statement that every camera stream is stored, transmitted or shared.
For a Tata SUV, look for the model’s owner manual, infotainment privacy notice and any consent screen attached to remote monitoring, security recording or app services. A group-level policy can authorize categories of processing while the vehicle-specific documentation determines what a particular camera actually does.

Can the car company see inside the cabin?
Sometimes the honest answer is “the documents do not say enough to know.” A locally processed DMS can generate a fatigue warning without sending a live image. Conversely, a security feature may save an event clip, and a connected vehicle may transmit diagnostic or service data. The manufacturer’s ability to receive a raw image depends on the system design, network configuration, account permissions and the feature you enable.
For the BE 6, the manual confirms telematics transmission of vehicle information and describes recorded Secure360 video, but the cited wording does not clearly say that live Eyedentity frames are streamed to Mahindra. For BYD, local processing is explicit, while model-specific controls still matter. For Tata, the policy permits intra-group and vendor sharing of personal data without establishing that all camera imagery is included.
India’s DPDP Act: useful rights, phased commencement
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 recognises protection of digital personal data and provides for commencement by government notification. The Act’s enactment date is not the same as the date every obligation becomes operative.
Notification G.S.R. 843(E), issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on 13 November 2025, phases commencement. Selected provisions apply on publication; some provisions begin after one year; major processing, rights and obligations provisions are scheduled after eighteen months. The Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, issued the same day, apply rules 1, 2 and 17–21 on publication, while rules 3, 5–16, 22 and 23 are scheduled eighteen months after publication.
On 20 October 2026, owners should verify the latest commencement notices before claiming that a particular access, deletion, consent or complaint provision is already enforceable. The legal framework can support a request to the vehicle maker, but the practical route may still be the manufacturer’s privacy contact, app settings or customer-care process described in the current notice.
How to check a specific SUV before buying or driving it
- Identify the exact configuration. Record the model, model year, trim, software version and market. Do not assume that a shutter or recording option on one variant exists on another.
- Read both documents. Check the owner manual and the in-car privacy notice for terms such as DMS, DOMS, occupant monitoring, Secure360, sentry, remote view, telematics, event recording and biometric data.
- Locate the camera and indicator. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the activity light or on-screen icon. Confirm whether it indicates optical capture, processing, recording or network transmission; those are different events.
- Test the available control. If a physical shutter exists, operate it as the manual instructs. If there is a software disable option, note which safety functions stop working and whether the setting persists after restarting the car.
- Ask where clips go. Obtain a specific answer about vehicle memory, removable storage, a phone, a cloud account and retention time for both security clips and diagnostic data.
- Check connected services. Review remote-view, family-driver profiles, account sharing, app permissions and third-party services. Remove former drivers and revoke access when a vehicle changes hands.
- Request the privacy contact. Ask how to access, correct or delete personal data and how to withdraw consent where the manufacturer offers that route. Keep the response and the vehicle identification details.
Do not apply an aftermarket sticker or generic cover until the manual confirms that it will not block an infrared illuminator, driver-safety sensor or required field of view. A cover that protects privacy but disables a legally or operationally important warning can create a different safety problem.

Questions to put to a dealer or manufacturer
- Does the DMS generate only local alerts, or can raw images leave the vehicle?
- Is any image, face template, attention score or event clip stored? For how long and on what device?
- Does a privacy shutter exist on this VIN’s trim, and does closing it disable safety functions?
- Are Secure360, remote-view or abnormal-activity recordings enabled by default?
- Which affiliates and vendors can access the data, and for what documented purpose?
- What happens to data when the vehicle is sold, the connected account is closed or a driver withdraws consent?
- Which Indian privacy notice and complaint channel apply to this vehicle today?
Practical verdict
Driver-monitoring cameras are not inherently unsafe for privacy, but safety branding is not a privacy guarantee. The strongest published control in this comparison is BYD’s combination of stated local camera processing and a manually operated DMS cover switch, subject to model and trim confirmation. The BE 6 documentation is unusually explicit that a 5-megapixel interior camera exists, that Secure360 can create event recordings and that telematics can transmit vehicle information for service, research and legal purposes. Tata’s policy provides a sharing and security framework without proving what every camera stream does.
Choose a vehicle only after you can answer four concrete questions for the exact configuration: what is captured, where it is processed, what is stored or transmitted, and how you can stop or delete it. Treat the current manual and privacy notice—not a sales description—as the controlling source, and recheck the legal position as India’s phased DPDP framework takes effect.
