They are a poor bet when entry costs and staff time crowd out more direct growth work, or when you cannot show results. Treat an award as a possible credibility asset, not a reliable source of new customers or revenue.
What an award can—and cannot—do for a small business
A win or shortlist may give a business a useful proof point to share with prospects, customers, employees, or partners. That value depends on whether those audiences recognize the program and whether the business can use the recognition under the organizer’s rules. Entering alone does not deliver the benefits associated with winning.

Evidence of business impact is limited. A 2014 peer-reviewed study examined 10 small and medium-sized enterprises that had won a major business awards competition. Interviews and organizational documents indicated short-term improvements in brand identity within business networks and the community, enterprise profile, sales revenue, and employee motivation. Effects were less apparent over time, though most respondents continued to use their awards strategically. The study is small, covers award winners rather than all entrants, and does not establish that awards caused the reported outcomes or predict returns from digital-industry awards. The available evidence does not establish a typical numerical return on investment for entering digital awards. Organizer claims about visibility or trust should not be read as guaranteed sales results.

What does it cost to enter?
Entry fees are only part of the expense. Include staff time to select a category, gather evidence, write the case, and prepare any required video or design work. Add possible travel or ceremony costs and optional winner materials. Fees may apply separately to each category, and some are non-refundable.

How to decide whether an award is worth entering
- Check fit. Confirm that the work is eligible, recent enough, and a close match for a named category. Avoid sending the same generic story to several loosely related categories; adapt the case to each category’s criteria.
- Inspect the judging process. Look for published criteria, judging stages, and judge expertise. Check whether the rules explain how conflicts of interest are handled.
- Assess your evidence. Can you explain what you set out to do, what you did, and what changed? Results should match the category criteria rather than rely only on activity or vanity metrics.
- Identify a use for recognition. Decide whether a win, shortlist, or judge feedback would matter to your customers, recruitment, or sales process. Confirm that the rules permit the way you plan to use the award mark or entry materials.
- Compare the opportunity cost. Estimate the fee, preparation hours, and other expenses, then compare that total with a more direct growth activity. There is no universal break-even threshold; use your own economics and past conversion data.
How to prepare evidence judges can assess
SME Digital Awards’ 2026 guidance asks entrants to choose an appropriate category, follow the requested materials, and provide objective, category-aligned key performance indicators. Its scoring weights strategy and results at 30% each, and idea and execution at 20% each. The guidance cautions that impressions, likes, or shares alone do not establish commercial value, and calls for connecting audience behavior or perceptions with business results. When to enter—and when to pass
- Consider entering when the project clearly fits a category, you have credible results to present, the judging standards are transparent, and you know how you would use recognition.
- Consider waiting or skipping it when the case is thin, the category fit is weak, the process is unclear, or the total cost would displace a more useful marketing or sales activity.
- Be realistic about timing if recognition would arrive after the project’s sales window or if the business cannot maintain a required public URL or prepare a demonstration in time.
