If the Sony FX5 is unavailable for your shoot, start by checking local stock and rental access for the Sony FX3. It is the clearest compact, full-frame Sony alternative in the available specifications, but it is not documented as offering the FX5’s open-gate capture or internal X-OCN RAW. Canon EOS C80, Blackmagic PYXIS, and RED KOMODO-X are also worth comparing when their workflows fit your production. None is a guaranteed immediate buy: confirm local supply, delivery or rental dates, and the features your job actually needs.
What the FX5 offers—and what an alternative must replace
Sony announced the FX5 on July 22, 2026, describing it as a compact, full-frame Cinema Line camera with a newly developed fully stacked CMOS sensor. Sony claims 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3 and lists three base ISO settings: 800, 4000, and 12800. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent comparative test results. At launch, Sony specified recording up to 5K at 60 fps, 4K at 120 fps, and FHD at 240 fps. Open-gate capture is available only when recording in X-OCN, Sony says. Internal 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN RAW is therefore a key distinction to check before choosing a substitute. Sony’s announcement

Why the FX3 is the first one to investigate
If your production already uses Sony gear and can work without FX5 open-gate capture and internal X-OCN, the FX3 is the most direct compact, full-frame alternative documented here. Sony specifies 4K up to 120p, 15+ stop S-Log3 latitude, five-axis stabilization, and CFexpress Type A/SD media. Check the exact camera, recording mode and media requirements against your delivery needs rather than treating shared brand or sensor format as proof of identical workflow. Sony FX3 specifications

Canon EOS C80
Consider the C80 if you are open to a move away from Sony. The available Canon product information confirms it is a cinema-camera system, but does not support a feature-by-feature verdict against the FX5. Before committing, check whether your lenses can be used, what media and audio setup the shoot requires, and whether the camera’s ND and autofocus capabilities fit the work. Canon EOS C80

Blackmagic PYXIS
PYXIS is a modular system, so assess the complete production setup rather than the camera body alone. Account for the specific lens mount, media, monitoring and rigging you would need, along with how the files fit your post workflow. It should not be assumed to be a drop-in FX5 replacement. RED KOMODO-X
KOMODO-X is another system to investigate, but the cited product page alone is not enough to establish that it suits a particular FX5 shoot. Verify the configuration and accessories needed for your setup, then compare the full workflow and total system cost with your existing gear. RED KOMODO-X

Check these details before booking or buying
For a short timeline, availability is a local stock and delivery question—not something a product page can guarantee. Ask retailers or rental houses for the exact body, configuration and delivery or pickup date in your market. Then make the camera decision against the shoot’s actual requirements:
- Capture: Confirm the modes you need are available now, including frame rates and whether open-gate or RAW capture is essential. Do not rely on the FX5’s planned firmware additions as delivered features.
- Image and movement: Compare sensor format and shutter behavior, autofocus and stabilization needs for the way you shoot.
- On-set operation: Check audio inputs and recording, internal ND, monitoring and rigging. List what is included in the camera configuration and what must be added.
- Lenses and media: Verify lens mount compatibility, existing lens investment, recording media and any adapters or accessories required.
- Complete cost and access: Price the body or rental together with the media, lenses, monitoring, audio and rig needed for the job. Confirm actual current regional pricing and supply directly with the seller or rental provider.
