Decky Loader plugins are not automatically safe. They are community software maintained by different developers, so safety depends on where a plugin comes from, how actively it is maintained, what it requests, and whether it needs root access. Decky’s own README says, “We do not recommend installing plugins from untrusted sources.” A plugin marked as requiring root can have full access to the Steam Deck’s system.
Decky does provide useful safeguards: plugins receive random internal callsigns, their files are owned by root with read-only permissions, and they run in separate processes. Those measures reduce accidental interference, but they do not make an unknown or malicious plugin trustworthy. You can remove an individual plugin from Decky’s plugin-management interface, remove Decky Loader itself from Desktop Mode, or clear the plugin directory when a broken plugin prevents Decky from starting.

What Decky Loader plugins are and why safety varies
Decky Loader is an open-source extension framework for Steam Deck. Each plugin is a separate community project rather than part of one publisher-controlled software package. One developer may maintain a small interface enhancement, while another may write code that changes performance settings, accesses files outside the plugin directory, or communicates with system services.
That distributed model means the Decky label alone is not a safety guarantee. The practical trust decision is made plugin by plugin. The project’s own guidance is explicit: “We do not recommend installing plugins from untrusted sources.” A link copied from an unknown post, chat message, or video description should be treated differently from a plugin available through Decky’s official store or a recognizable, actively maintained developer repository.

Compatibility is also variable. SteamOS, Decky Loader, and individual plugins can change independently. A plugin that worked after one update may crash, stop loading, or behave differently after another. Read the plugin’s release notes and issue reports before installing it, especially after a major SteamOS or Decky update.
What the root warning means
A root marker means the plugin requested root access in its manifest. Decky maintainer WerWolv explained on August 5, 2022, that the marker means the plugin requested root access and is “basically just a warning for users to be careful when installing such plugins as root access means the plugin gets full access over the system.”
Root access is sometimes technically necessary. Plugins that control kernel-facing features, hardware behavior, or system-wide performance settings may not work with ordinary user permissions. The requirement does not prove that a plugin is malicious, but it increases the consequences of trusting it. A root-capable plugin could potentially read or alter system files, change settings, install or remove software, or interfere with other services. Install one only when you understand why the permission is needed and trust the maintainer and distribution source.
Decky’s security controls—and their limits
Decky documents several defense-in-depth measures:
- Random callsigns: plugins receive random internal identifiers, making them less dependent on predictable names for internal handling.
- Root ownership and read-only plugin files: installed plugin files are owned by root and are not ordinarily writable by the plugin process.
- Separate processes: plugins run in isolated processes with their own event loops rather than all executing inside one shared process.
These controls can reduce accidental file modification and limit the blast radius of ordinary plugin faults. They do not inspect a plugin’s intentions, guarantee that its code is free of vulnerabilities, or prevent a plugin with broad permissions from performing harmful actions. Isolation is a safeguard, not a substitute for source review. A root-requesting plugin still has broad authority even when Decky’s process and file controls are working as designed.

A practical safety checklist before installing
Evaluate every plugin against the same questions. The safest choice is usually the one that needs the least privilege, comes from a traceable maintainer, and can be removed without affecting Decky startup.

Do not treat a popular name or a high download count as proof of safety. Verify that the repository you are using belongs to the actual maintainer, inspect the requested permissions, and keep a note of what the plugin installs or changes. Avoid pasted installation URLs from sources you cannot authenticate.
Can a plugin damage a Steam Deck?
Yes, although the outcome depends on the plugin’s code and permissions. A normal user-level bug may cause a crash, a stuck interface, excessive resource use, or corrupted plugin settings. A plugin with root access has a wider range of possible effects because it can reach system-level files and controls. A plugin that changes performance or kernel-related settings could also produce instability if it applies values your hardware or SteamOS version does not handle correctly.

If a plugin suddenly causes crashes, unexpected network activity, unexplained settings changes, or Decky startup failures, stop using it and remove it through the recovery paths below.

How to remove one Decky plugin in Gaming Mode
Use Decky’s built-in management interface when Decky still opens normally. The project README describes the menu as supporting plugin updates, uninstallation, and reloads.
- Enter Gaming Mode on the Steam Deck.
- Open the Quick Access menu.
- Open the Decky section and go to the plugin-management or store view.
- Select the installed plugin you want to remove and choose its uninstall or remove action.
- Reload Decky. If the plugin still appears, reboot the Steam Deck and check the list again.
This procedure removes the plugin files Decky installed. It does not necessarily remove files that the plugin created elsewhere.
What uninstalling does not remove
The official README warns: “Keep in mind that uninstalling a plugin will only remove its plugin files, not any other files it may have created.” Depending on the plugin, those leftovers could include configuration files, caches, downloaded binaries, logs, or data stored in another directory.

Remove only those confirmed leftovers. Do not delete broad system directories or files merely because their names look unfamiliar. When a plugin’s documentation does not explain its storage locations, the safer choice is to leave uncertain files alone or ask the maintainer for a cleanup procedure.

How to remove Decky Loader completely
To uninstall Decky itself, switch to Desktop Mode, rerun the Decky installer, and select uninstall decky loader. This removes the loader rather than just one plugin. The installer may ask for the Deck administrator password.
The project also publishes an uninstall script:

Do not copy a modified version of the command from an unknown post, because piping an altered script into a shell gives that script the permissions it requests. Review the source and be prepared for the administrator-password prompt before running it.
What to do when a plugin prevents Decky from starting
If Decky crashes during startup or its menu never appears after a plugin installation, an official issue report documents a manual recovery path. It is useful when the normal uninstall interface is unavailable, but it is a broad reset rather than a targeted removal.

- Switch to Desktop Mode and open a terminal or file manager.
- Move or delete the contents of
~/homebrew/plugins. Moving the directory to a temporary backup location is preferable if you may need to inspect it later. - Restart the plugin-loader service with
sudo systemctl restart plugin_loader.service, or reboot the Steam Deck. - Open Decky again. Reinstall only plugins whose sources and permissions you have checked.
Clearing ~/homebrew/plugins removes every plugin stored there, not just the suspected offender. Use this method when the UI is inaccessible and you accept the need to reinstall trusted plugins afterward. The issue report documents it as a troubleshooting step; it is not a guarantee that every startup problem has the same cause or that the procedure will fix unrelated Decky failures.
How to investigate a crash before reinstalling
Think back to the last change: a newly installed plugin, a plugin update, or a SteamOS or Decky update. If the problem began immediately after one plugin was added, remove that plugin first through the UI. If Decky cannot start, use the directory-clearing recovery path, then add plugins back one at a time. Reinstalling everything at once makes it difficult to identify the trigger.
After each reinstall, test the Decky menu and the feature you actually need before adding another plugin. Keep root-requesting plugins for last, and reinstall them only after confirming that the Deck remains stable with ordinary plugins. If a specific plugin repeatedly causes failure, leave it uninstalled and report the reproducible symptoms to its maintainer.
Keeping a safer plugin setup over time
- Prefer the official Decky store or a developer repository whose ownership and release history you can verify.
- Read the manifest and release notes, especially for root requirements and compatibility changes.
- Update selectively instead of installing every update immediately after a major SteamOS change.
- Keep a record of which plugins are installed so you know what to remove during troubleshooting.
- Remove abandoned or unused plugins; fewer installed components mean fewer possible failure points.
- Before granting root access, decide whether the feature justifies full system authority.
Decky’s safeguards are valuable, but trust still begins with the code source and the maintainer. Treat root access as a deliberate security decision, and keep the manual recovery procedure available if a plugin blocks normal startup.
