The storage block uses solid thermal concrete and steel heat-exchanger tubes rather than reactive electrochemical cells, so it does not have the lithium-ion thermal-runaway mechanism. The complete installation can still contain electrical heaters, pumps, valves, hot heat-transfer fluid, pressure equipment, insulation and control systems that require conventional industrial safeguards.
Publicly documented systems are designed mainly to deliver process heat, steam or thermal oil. No reviewed source documents a concrete thermal battery providing emergency electricity at a data center or supplies a dedicated data-center fire-test report. Operators should therefore assess the technology as an industrial heat plant whose safety and usefulness depend on the entire balance of plant and on how it is integrated with electrical-resilience systems.

What a concrete thermal battery is
A concrete thermal battery stores energy as sensible heat: electricity or another heat source raises the temperature of a solid thermal medium, and that heat is later delivered to an industrial process. In the documented HEATCRETE® design, thermal concrete surrounds U-shaped carbon-steel heat-exchanger tubes. A heat-transfer fluid—typically thermal oil or water/steam—circulates inside the tubes, so the fluid does not directly contact the concrete.

- Charging: electrical heaters or an external heat source raises the temperature of the circulating fluid.
- Heat storage: the hot fluid transfers heat through the steel tubes into the concrete block.
- Discharging: cooler fluid passes through the tubes, absorbs stored heat and carries it to a process, steam generator or thermal-oil loop.
- Control: valves, pumps, sensors and a control system regulate temperature, pressure and flow.
Because the concrete block has no moving parts, the storage medium itself is mechanically simple. The moving and energy-conversion equipment sits at the interfaces around the block, where most maintenance and many operational hazards are concentrated.

The Idaho National Laboratory classifies concrete thermal energy storage as near-deployment technology and identifies the HEATCRETE® module and U-tube steel heat-transfer approach. A peer-reviewed Journal of Energy Storage paper reports long-term performance for a concrete-based modular system. Those sources support the technology’s industrial maturity, but they do not establish data-center UPS certification.
Why the storage medium has a favorable fire profile
No electrochemical thermal runaway in the concrete block
Thermal runaway in a lithium-ion battery is a self-heating failure in which damaged cells can release flammable gases and ignite neighboring cells. A concrete thermal store does not contain electrochemical cells or an active chemical reaction that propagates in that way. Its principal storage materials are solid concrete and steel, which are non-reactive compared with cell chemistry under normal operation.
This distinction can reduce one important hazard class: a fault in one section of the thermal block is not expected to create the same cascading cell-to-cell event associated with a large electrochemical battery enclosure. It does not mean that the installation is fireproof or that a fire cannot occur elsewhere in the plant.
What the low-combustibility claim does—and does not—cover
Statements such as “zero risk of combustion, gas release, or thermal runaway” are vendor claims made for particular refractory-brick products and should not be generalized to every thermal-battery design. For a concrete system, the defensible claim is narrower: the solid concrete-and-steel storage medium does not present a lithium-ion cell-chemistry fire mechanism. The project still needs a hazard analysis for all attached equipment, fluids and electrical systems.

Where fire and safety hazards remain
Electrical heaters and switchgear
Charging can involve high-power electrical heaters, transformers, switchgear, cables and control panels. Short circuits, insulation failure, loose terminations or cooling problems can produce arcing and localized fires. Protective coordination, grounding, arc-flash controls, emergency isolation and appropriately rated enclosures are therefore required just as they are for other industrial electrical equipment.
Heat-transfer fluid and piping
Thermal oil can leak from flanges, seals, valves or damaged tubing. At elevated temperature, a leak may create hot surfaces, vapour or an ignitable spray depending on the fluid’s properties and the release conditions. Water/steam systems present a different hazard profile but still require controls for hot fluid, pressure and flashing liquid. Specify the fluid, flash point, maximum operating temperature, leak-detection method and containment strategy in the project safety case.
Pressure and steam equipment
If the battery supplies steam, the installation may include boilers, steam generators, pressure vessels, relief valves and high-energy piping. A blocked outlet, failed control valve or incorrect isolation can cause overpressure. Pressure-relief sizing, inspection intervals, safe discharge routing and compliance with the jurisdiction’s pressure-equipment rules must be reviewed independently of the concrete block.
Hot surfaces, insulation and nearby equipment
A block operating near 390°C can burn personnel and ignite combustible material that is placed too close to heaters, piping or valves. Insulation reduces heat loss but can conceal hot spots, fluid leaks or damaged wiring. Use guarded access, thermal barriers, clearances, signs, temperature monitoring and an inspection method that can detect degradation beneath insulation.
Controls, sensors and loss of circulation
Temperature, pressure and flow sensors are part of the protection system. A failed sensor, stuck valve or loss of pump flow can allow a local temperature excursion even when the storage medium itself is stable. Design the controls with independent high-temperature and high-pressure trips, fail-safe valve positions, manual emergency shutdown and a documented response to loss of power or communications.

Fire detection, separation and ventilation
Detection should cover electrical rooms, heater cabinets, pump skids, fluid-handling areas and any enclosed spaces where a leak could accumulate heat or vapour. Separate the thermal plant from occupied data-hall areas and critical electrical distribution, provide access for responders, and use ventilation appropriate to the selected fluid and process. Final spacing, suppression and egress decisions belong to the site fire engineer, authority having jurisdiction and insurer.

Maintenance and reliability
The storage block is passive, not the whole plant
ENERGYNEST describes the ThermalBattery™ as requiring very low maintenance because the storage medium has no moving parts other than a few control valves at the piping interface. That statement applies to the block’s mechanical construction. Pumps, valves, instrumentation, heaters, electrical equipment, heat-transfer-fluid circuits, insulation and safety devices still need inspection, calibration and replacement.
Typical maintenance activities
- Inspect pumps, seals, bearings and couplings for vibration, leakage and loss of flow.
- Exercise and test isolation, control and relief valves; verify fail-safe positions.
- Calibrate temperature, pressure and flow instruments and test independent shutdown trips.
- Inspect electrical heaters, terminals, switchgear, grounding and protective relays for heat damage or looseness.
- Sample or otherwise assess thermal-transfer fluid according to the fluid supplier’s requirements; investigate contamination, oxidation or abnormal viscosity.
- Check insulation, cladding, expansion allowances and accessible tube or manifold connections for hot spots and leaks.
- Verify fire detection, alarms, emergency power, ventilation and suppression interfaces.
- Review operating data after every abnormal event and after major maintenance before returning to full temperature.
Continuous monitoring
The vendor says temperature, pressure and flow are recorded and analyzed continuously so deviations can be detected early. For a critical facility, retain trend data long enough to identify gradual drift, define alarm thresholds and assign a human response to each alarm. Monitoring should distinguish a sensor fault from a real thermal or hydraulic problem and should remain available during network or supervisory-control outages.
Redundancy during service
ENERGYNEST describes operation in parallel with existing boilers or other heat sources, allowing the existing source to provide backup during maintenance or partial outages. That is useful process-heat redundancy. It does not by itself prove electrical resilience, UPS ride-through, generator autonomy or compliance with a data center’s uptime design.
Are concrete thermal batteries suitable for data centers?
Where the evidence supports them
Documented applications center on industrial process heat, steam, drying and thermal-oil duties. A data center could potentially use stored heat for a non-IT load—such as district or campus heating, absorption-chiller operation or another thermal process—if a separately engineered heat-recovery and control system makes that useful. The economics and safety case would be site-specific.

Why they are not a drop-in UPS replacement
A UPS must deliver controlled electricity to the data center’s electrical distribution during an interruption, usually with tightly managed voltage, frequency and transfer time. A concrete thermal battery stores heat, not electricity. Turning that heat back into electricity requires a heat engine, turbine, generator or another conversion chain, plus controls, cooling and electrical interconnection. The reviewed evidence does not document such a system providing emergency data-center power.
For electrical backup, operators generally evaluate UPS systems, generators, battery energy-storage systems or hybrid microgrids. A concrete thermal battery could complement those assets in a broader energy strategy, but it should not be counted as UPS capacity unless the complete heat-to-power system has been engineered, tested and certified for the required duty.
Integration questions for a critical facility
- What output is actually required: process heat, steam, cooling energy or electricity?
- What response time, ride-through duration and restart sequence does the load require?
- Where will the thermal plant sit relative to data halls, generators, fuel systems and electrical rooms?
- What fluid, pressure class and maximum temperature will the design use?
- Which components are redundant, and can the facility continue operating while one module or pump is isolated?
- Which fire, building, electrical, pressure-equipment and environmental approvals apply in the project’s jurisdiction?
- What independent test reports, failure-mode analysis, insurer review and acceptance tests will be required?
How to evaluate a proposed installation
- Define the service: write the required thermal or electrical output, response time, duration, operating temperature and availability target before comparing technologies.
- Map the complete plant: include heaters, transformers, pumps, valves, manifolds, fluid inventory, steam equipment, controls, ventilation, insulation and interfaces—not only the concrete block.
- Perform a formal hazard review: use a process-hazard analysis or equivalent method to examine leaks, overpressure, loss of flow, sensor failure, electrical faults, fire exposure and emergency shutdown.
- Set physical protection: specify separation distances, barriers, drainage or containment, access control, hot-surface protection, detection and responder access with the authority having jurisdiction.
- Verify equipment ratings: check temperature, pressure, corrosion, thermal expansion, electrical short-circuit and seismic ratings against the actual site conditions.
- Design maintenance access: provide isolation points, drains, sampling points, lifting paths and bypass capability so a pump, valve, heater or instrument can be serviced without exposing staff to uncontrolled heat.
- Test abnormal operation: demonstrate high-temperature trips, pressure relief, loss-of-circulation response, emergency power behavior, fire alarms and controlled cooldown before accepting the system.
- Document lifecycle obligations: record inspection intervals, fluid-management procedures, sensor calibration, spare parts, software changes, training and end-of-life plans.
Concrete thermal storage compared with electrical battery storage
| Decision factor | Concrete thermal battery | Electrochemical battery energy-storage system |
|---|---|---|
| Stored output | Heat, steam or thermal oil | Electricity delivered through power-conversion equipment |
| Primary storage medium | Thermal concrete and steel heat-exchanger tubes | Electrochemical cells, modules and racks |
| Characteristic fire mechanism | No lithium-ion cell thermal runaway in the concrete block; hazards remain in heaters, fluids, piping and electrical equipment | Cell failure can produce heat and flammable gas, with potential propagation between cells |
| Moving parts | None in the storage block; pumps and a few control valves are external interfaces | Usually includes HVAC, fans, contactors and power-conversion equipment, depending on design |
| Typical data-center role supported by reviewed evidence | Industrial thermal service; no documented UPS deployment | Electrical backup and grid-support applications, subject to the selected system’s certification and design |
| Main integration question | How will heat be used, and how will fluid, pressure and hot-surface hazards be controlled? | How will electrical protection, fire mitigation, thermal management and power quality be managed? |
The table compares hazard categories, not a universal safety ranking. A well-engineered installation of either technology depends on site layout, controls, maintenance, emergency planning and compliance with local requirements.
What operators should ask vendors before approval
- Which performance figures are guaranteed contract values, and which are indicative or laboratory results?
- What temperature, pressure and fluid limits apply to every component, not just the storage medium?
- What independent fire, pressure-equipment, electrical and seismic test documentation is available?
- How are leaks, loss of circulation, sensor disagreement and control-system failure detected and isolated?
- What inspection and replacement schedule applies to pumps, valves, heaters, instruments, insulation and fluid?
- How does the system fail during a total power loss, communications loss or emergency stop?
- Can the plant operate safely with one module, pump train or heat source unavailable?
- What approvals, insurer conditions and emergency-response information will be supplied for the local jurisdiction?
Bottom line for data-center decision-makers
Concrete thermal batteries are inherently less prone to the cell-propagation and thermal-runaway scenario associated with lithium-ion storage because their core medium is solid thermal concrete and steel. That advantage is real but limited: heaters, electrical equipment, hot fluid, piping, pressure systems, insulation and controls remain credible sources of fire, burn, release and overpressure hazards.

The technology is best evaluated as a high-temperature industrial heat system. Current public evidence supports process-heat and steam applications, reports more than 25 years of design life and less than 2% thermal loss over 24 hours for a large project, and describes low maintenance for the passive block. It does not establish a concrete thermal battery as a data-center UPS or emergency-electricity substitute. Use it only where the required output is thermal—or where a separately engineered, tested and approved heat-to-power chain satisfies the facility’s electrical-resilience requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do concrete thermal batteries catch fire?
The concrete-and-steel storage block does not contain lithium-ion cells and does not have the same thermal-runaway mechanism. Fires can still originate in heaters, switchgear, pumps, thermal oil, insulation, wiring or adjacent equipment, so the complete plant needs detection, shutdown, separation and pressure protection.
What is HEATCRETE®?
HEATCRETE® is ENERGYNEST’s thermal-concrete storage medium. U-shaped carbon-steel tubes embedded in the concrete carry thermal oil or water/steam to charge and discharge heat without direct fluid contact with the concrete.
Can one replace a lithium-ion UPS at a data center?
Not directly. A concrete thermal battery stores heat, while a UPS must deliver regulated electricity during an interruption. A heat-to-power system would have to be separately engineered and proven for response time, power quality, reliability and code compliance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How much maintenance does the system need?
The storage block has no moving parts and is described by its vendor as very low maintenance. Pumps, valves, sensors, heaters, electrical equipment, thermal-transfer fluid, insulation, fire systems and pressure-protection devices still require scheduled inspection, testing and service.
How long can a concrete thermal battery last?
ENERGYNEST reports a design life above 25 years and discusses tens of thousands of thermal-stress cycles. The actual life depends on the project’s temperature range, ramp rates, cycling pattern, fluid system and maintenance, so those figures should be treated as vendor-reported design targets rather than a universal guarantee.
