A current browser on an encrypted, access-controlled device can protect passwords and files well enough for many people, but the browser profile, extensions, sync account, recovery methods and autofill all become security boundaries. Use a small allowlist of extensions, narrow their permissions, enable multifactor authentication (MFA) for synced password stores and privileged accounts, and never paste sensitive material into an untrusted page or extension.
The practical question is not whether a browser is “safe” in the abstract. It is whether you have reduced each place where data can be read, decrypted, copied or recovered.

What counts as a browser tool?
“Browser tools” includes more than the browser program itself. The security model also covers its built-in password manager, autofill, extensions, web-based file tools, browser profiles, synchronization and account-recovery features. All of them operate at the boundary between sensitive local data and public websites. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) describes browsers as attractive targets because they combine “broad access to sensitive data” with exposure to public internet sites.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That combination creates two different questions. First, can an attacker reach the browser or its profile? Second, if the browser is allowed to reach a page, extension or sync service, what data can that component see? A strong answer to the first question does not cancel a weak answer to the second.

When browser storage is reasonably safe
Built-in password managers use encryption, but encryption is only one layer. Safety depends on the device account, the browser profile, the decryption key, synchronization and every extension that can interact with pages.
Use a supported, protected device
- Install browser and operating-system updates automatically and keep the device account protected by a strong password or passkey.
- Use full-device encryption where your operating system provides it, and lock the screen whenever the device is unattended.
- Keep separate browser profiles for high-value work if several people or roles use the same computer.
- Do not treat a browser profile on a shared, borrowed or unmanaged computer as a private vault.
If an attacker controls the logged-in device, browser encryption cannot reliably protect data while it is being used. The local user session, profile files and unlocked password store are then part of the attack surface.
What the built-in stores actually protect
Google’s documentation says Chrome stores an irreversible fingerprint locally for password-reuse monitoring: an encrypted 37-bit partial hash, the password length, the date of the last successful check and the account email. It also says usernames and passwords are not sent to Google or third-party providers for that function. This is a narrowly described local check, not a guarantee that every browser feature or extension handles credentials the same way.
Microsoft says Edge encrypts passwords, credit-card numbers and cookies on disk with AES and an operating-system storage area. Data synchronized between devices uses HTTPS and is encrypted on Microsoft servers; sensitive synchronized data also receives additional device encryption. The protections still depend on the operating-system account, the browser profile and the account used to synchronize them.
The NCSC’s rule is a useful test for any design: “Nobody should be able to access passwords without the correct decryption key.” Ask where that key is held, what unlocks it, how recovery works and what happens after a device is lost or a sync account is taken over.

The attack surfaces that matter most
Device and browser profile
Malware, an unlocked session or another local user can bypass many browser-level safeguards. A browser can protect a file at rest and still expose it to software that is already running inside your account. Keep the operating system patched, use a separate account for other users and lock the device instead of relying on a browser window being closed.
Extensions
Every extension is software with privileges. The NCSC warns that extensions increase the browser’s attack surface because they can contain vulnerabilities. An extension that can interact with a page is inherently able to access anything on that page, including an autofilled password, according to Microsoft.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Permissions such as reading browsing history, changing page content, accessing data on all websites or communicating with native applications deserve the same scrutiny as a desktop program requesting broad access. A popular extension can still be compromised, abandoned or updated to request more access than you originally approved.
Cloud synchronization and recovery
Sync is convenient, but it adds data in transit, a remote account, recovery methods and authentication on every connected device. The NCSC specifically identifies remote account compromise, recovery weaknesses and device authentication as risks in cloud-synchronized password managers. A stolen session cookie, weak recovery email or unprotected secondary device can therefore defeat a strong local password.
Phishing and malicious pages
A page can ask you to upload a document, paste a password or approve an extension. Once supplied, the browser cannot make that disclosure safe. Treat a website’s request for a secret or sensitive file as a security decision, not as an ordinary form submission.

Can an extension read your passwords?
Yes, if its permissions let it interact with the page where the password appears. This includes credentials inserted by autofill. An extension does not need to be a password manager to become a risk; a content script, injected script or compromised update can inspect page fields that it is allowed to access.

How to reduce extension exposure
- Open the browser’s Extensions or Add-ons manager and remove anything you do not actively need.
- For each remaining extension, review the publisher, requested permissions, update history and stated purpose.
- Set site access to the narrowest available option, such as specific sites or on-click access, instead of all websites.
- Block access to banking, administration, health and other sensitive domains whenever the browser offers a site exception or blocklist.
- Recheck permissions after every extension update; a new permission is a new trust decision.
Chrome’s developer guidance recommends keeping sensitive operations in the extension service worker rather than sending secrets to content scripts, validating message senders, sanitizing inputs and limiting privileged actions. Those are design safeguards for developers; users should still assume that an extension with page access can see page data.
Is browser autofill safe?
Well-designed autofill can improve security because it offers credentials only for the site where they were saved. The NCSC says a manager should never present all stored credentials to an arbitrary site. Site-bound matching makes a look-alike phishing domain less likely to receive a real password than a workflow based on copying credentials from a note or reusing one password everywhere.
Use autofill without giving away more than necessary
- Prefer site-bound suggestions that identify the exact domain before insertion.
- Do not approve a prompt that offers credentials on a domain you do not recognize, even if the page looks familiar.
- Review the address bar and the account or organization name before submitting a password.
- On shared or public devices, disable password and payment autofill and sign out of the browser profile.
- Never copy a password into a page, chat box or document merely because autofill did not appear.
Autofill is not a substitute for extension hygiene. An extension with permission to interact with the page may read a value immediately after autofill inserts it.
Browser password manager or dedicated password manager?
Neither choice is universally safest. Compare the controls below, then choose the option you can keep updated, protect with MFA and use consistently. The NCSC identifies the following capabilities as desirable in a dedicated manager; their presence varies by product.

| Security control | Built-in browser manager | Dedicated password manager |
|---|---|---|
| Encryption at rest | Documented by browser vendors; for example, Edge uses AES with an operating-system storage area. | Look for encryption at rest and a clear explanation of where keys are held. |
| Who can unlock data | Usually tied to the device account, browser profile and any sync account. | Should explain the decryption key, local unlock method and zero-access or equivalent design where applicable. |
| Recovery | Depends on the browser account and its recovery process. | Assess protected recovery, emergency access and what support staff can or cannot reset. |
| MFA | Available through the associated account when supported. | Look for MFA, with a phishing-resistant method for high-value use. |
| Export controls | Check whether exports can be restricted, protected or audited. | Look for controlled export and warnings before creating an unencrypted copy. |
| Extension permissions | Browser autofill may rely on an extension or built-in component; review its page access. | Most managers use an extension, so apply the same least-privilege review. |
| Phishing-resistant autofill | Safer when credentials are matched to the saved site. | Prefer site-bound autofill that refuses arbitrary domains. |
| Sync protection | Review transport encryption, server protection and connected devices. | Review transport encryption, server protection, session revocation and device authentication. |
| Platform coverage | Convenient within the browser ecosystem; cross-browser coverage varies. | Check support for every operating system and browser you actually use. |
| Patching and disclosure | Depends on the browser vendor’s update and vulnerability process. | Check patch speed, security advisories and vulnerability-disclosure practices. |
| Administrative audit | Enterprise controls depend on browser management or MDM. | Some products provide policy, reporting and audit features; verify what is included. |
A dedicated manager is not risk-free. It concentrates valuable data, so its account, recovery path, extension and connected devices must be protected more carefully than an ordinary website login.
Personal hardening checklist
- Turn on automatic updates. Apply browser, operating-system and extension updates promptly. Unsupported versions should not hold sensitive data.
- Inventory extensions. Remove unused items, replace broad “all sites” access with a narrower scope and review permissions after updates.
- Protect the device. Use device encryption, a strong account sign-in and automatic screen locking. Do not leave a password manager unlocked while away.
- Review synchronization. List every connected device, revoke sessions you no longer recognize, and understand what data is synced and how it is recovered.
- Secure recovery. Protect the recovery email and phone, store recovery codes offline and test the recovery process before an emergency.
- Enable MFA. Use MFA on cloud-sync password accounts, browser accounts that contain credentials and all privileged accounts. A FIDO2 security key is a practical hardware option for high-value accounts.
- Check exports. Know how to export, where the export is stored and how to delete it securely. Avoid leaving an unencrypted CSV or text file in Downloads.
- Test site matching. Confirm that autofill offers a login only on the exact saved site. Report or remove any tool that offers credentials on an unrelated domain.
- Handle files conservatively. Do not paste passwords or upload sensitive files to an untrusted browser tool, page or extension. Verify the recipient, retention policy and deletion controls before uploading.
Controls for organizations
Organizations should manage extensions as software, not as harmless browser accessories. Microsoft recommends auditing permissions, blocking extensions from sensitive internal sites, using allowlists and blocklists, piloting policy changes and rolling them out in phases.
A practical rollout
- Build an inventory of installed extensions, publishers, versions and requested permissions.
- Create an allowlist for approved extensions and block unapproved or high-risk categories.
- Use browser management or mobile-device-management policy to enforce site restrictions on banking, administration, health and other sensitive services.
- Pilot the policy with a small group, record broken workflows and adjust exceptions before broad deployment.
- Roll out in phases, monitor new permission requests and remove extensions that become abandoned or vulnerable.
Technical controls should be paired with a rule that employees never paste credentials or confidential files into an unapproved web tool. A policy that blocks one extension but permits the same data to be uploaded to an unknown page has not solved the underlying problem.
What to do when something goes wrong
An extension suddenly requests broad access
Decline the request, disable the extension and check its publisher and update notes. If it was used on sensitive sites, rotate affected passwords from a trusted device, revoke active sessions and review account logs. Re-enable it only if the new permission is necessary and approved.

Autofill appears on the wrong domain
Do not submit the form. Close the page, remove the suspicious saved entry or extension, and inspect the exact domain for look-alike spelling. Change the affected password from the legitimate site and revoke sessions if the credential may have been exposed.
Best Value

- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
A device containing synced passwords is lost
Use the manager or browser account’s device list to revoke the lost session, change the account password, invalidate recovery sessions and confirm MFA. If the device was unlocked or unencrypted, assume locally available data may have been exposed and rotate high-value credentials.
A sync account shows an unfamiliar login
Sign out unknown devices, change the account password from a clean device, verify recovery details and regenerate recovery codes. Review recent password-manager activity and rotate credentials that may have been viewed or exported.
You must process a sensitive file online
Prefer an approved tool with a documented retention and deletion policy. Confirm the destination, minimize the file to only necessary data, remove metadata when appropriate and delete the upload and any downloaded result afterward. If you cannot establish who can access the file or how long it is retained, do not upload it.

Browser tools can be safe enough for sensitive files and passwords when you treat the browser, device, extensions, sync account and recovery process as one system. Keep that system updated and encrypted, minimize and restrict extensions, demand site-bound autofill, protect synchronization with MFA—preferably a FIDO2 key for privileged access—and refuse to disclose secrets to untrusted pages. Convenience is acceptable only after those boundaries are under control.
