Some broiler pans are dishwasher-safe, but there is no universal rule. Follow the instructions for the exact pan and, when it came with a range, check the range manual too. Nordic Ware advises hand washing its aluminum pan, Wolf says not to dishwash its porcelain-coated pan or rack, while GE, JennAir and Amana approve dishwasher cleaning for the broiler-pan products covered by their guidance. If you cannot identify your pan or find its instructions, hand wash it cautiously.
Dishwasher guidance depends on the exact pan
Material is a useful clue, not a substitute for the maker’s instructions. A broiler set can also have different rules for its base and upper rack. These examples show why you should verify the product or appliance model before loading either part into a dishwasher.

Care tips by material and finish
Uncoated aluminum
For the Nordic Ware Naturals Classic Broiler Pan, wash with warm, soapy water before first use and after subsequent uses. Use nylon, wood or silicone utensils; metal utensils and scouring pads can scratch the surface. Prolonged contact with acidic foods such as vinegar or tomato products can darken, pit or corrode the aluminum. These are directions for this specific pan, not a universal rule for every aluminum broiler pan.
Porcelain-coated parts
Wolf’s porcelain-coated broiler pan should be hand washed. First drain grease into a disposable container and let the pan cool. Wash it with hot water and mild detergent, then rinse and dry. For stubborn stains, Wolf permits a mild abrasive cleaner or spray degreaser with a pink or blue no-scratch Scotch-Brite pad; wash the pan again with soap and water to remove cleaner. Wolf says its wire upper rack may go in the dishwasher, but not its porcelain-coated pan or rack. Do not line the pan with foil: Wolf warns that foil can melt and adhere.

Nonstick and other coatings
Do not assume a pan is dishwasher-safe just because it is labeled nonstick or coated. Check the care label or manual for that exact pan, including separate instructions for its base and rack. The Williams Sonoma Goldtouch Savory Broiler Pan is one example whose page says dishwasher-safe while recommending hand washing; it also prohibits abrasive products and scouring pads.
Other manufacturer-approved pans
GE lists dishwasher detergent among approved cleaners for the broiler pan and rack covered by its instructions. Its cleaning process is to drain fat, let the parts cool slightly, use detergent and warm water to loosen residue, then wash, rinse and dry. JennAir and Amana also state that their covered broil pans are dishwasher-safe. Their guidance cautions against soap-filled scouring pads, abrasive cleaners, steel wool, gritty cloths and abrasive paper towels. Follow the manual for your model rather than extending these approvals to another pan.

How to clean a broiler pan safely
- Identify the pan and its parts. Find the maker and model, then check the pan and range manual. Note whether the base and rack have different finishes or care directions.
- Handle grease safely. Let the pan cool enough to handle, drain grease into an appropriate disposable container, and do not leave a soiled pan in the oven to cool; GE cautions against doing so.
- Choose the cleaning method the maker allows. If dishwasher use is expressly approved, follow the product instructions. If it is prohibited or you cannot verify it, hand wash with warm or hot water and mild dish soap, using a nonabrasive sponge unless the maker specifies otherwise.
- Soak residue before scrubbing. For stuck-on grease, soak in hot water and detergent, then scrub gently, provided that method is suitable for the pan’s finish.
- Rinse and dry. Remove detergent and cleaner residue, then dry the parts thoroughly.
Can a broiler pan go in the oven’s self-clean cycle?
Do not assume it can. GE warns that metal pans and racks may warp during a self-clean cycle and that residual grease could ignite under the cycle’s high temperatures. Its guidance permits the cycle only for porcelain-enamel parts. Use the self-clean cycle only when the pan maker expressly allows it; otherwise remove the pan and clean it separately.
