If a stream is blurry or keeps buffering, first check whether the problem affects one title, one app, one device, or several devices. Then test the connection, improve Wi-Fi conditions, pause other network activity, and restart the affected device and router as needed. These checks can identify a connection or device problem before you consider changing your internet plan or buying equipment.
First identify what the video is doing
Blurry or pixelated playback is not quite the same symptom as a picture that skips, stutters, appears distorted, or is the wrong size. Netflix treats those display problems separately because they may involve the TV, streaming device, or video cable rather than connection speed. If the picture is distorted or stuttering rather than simply low-resolution, include the display device and its cable in your checks. Netflix lists these video symptoms separately.

Check how widely the problem occurs
Try another title in the same app. If possible, try another streaming app on the same device, then another device on the same network. This helps distinguish a title- or app-specific issue from one affecting the device or connection.
- One title: Try another title before changing network settings.
- One app: Check that app and its device-specific support steps.
- One device: Focus on that device, its Wi-Fi connection, and its app or browser.
- Several devices or services: Check the shared network, competing activity, and router conditions.
When you contact your internet service provider (ISP), note how many devices are affected and whether each uses Wi-Fi or a wired connection. Netflix recommends checking affected devices and their connection type when troubleshooting with an ISP.

Test the connection and interpret the result
Run a speed check appropriate for your streaming service, preferably on the device or connection you are troubleshooting. If practical, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection or another network. A comparison is useful even when a single speed result looks adequate: it can show whether the problem follows a particular Wi-Fi connection or device.
For Netflix, its published recommendations are 3 Mbps or higher for HD (720p), 5 Mbps or higher for Full HD (1080p), and 15 Mbps or higher for UHD (4K). Netflix does not display a publication year for these figures on the cited page. They are Netflix recommendations, not universal minimums for every streaming service or household. A stream can look blurry and still play because some services adjust video quality to the available connection. Netflix says, “Netflix adapts to the speed of your internet connection to make sure you can keep watching.” It may begin at lower quality and move to higher quality after playback starts. Improve Wi-Fi before changing your plan
If the device uses Wi-Fi, move it closer to the router and make sure it is not tucked into a recessed space or blocked by nearby metal. These conditions can weaken the connection. If you can, compare the stream from another location or network before concluding that your broadband plan is the problem. Netflix’s network guidance includes checking the connection and Wi-Fi conditions.

A wired connection is another useful comparison if the device supports it. Netflix recommends using a wired or Wi-Fi network when available; an Ethernet port or compatible adapter is required, depending on the device. A cable is a test of the connection path, not a guaranteed fix for every cause of buffering or blur. Netflix discusses network options for playback quality.
Pause other activity, then restart
Other devices using the internet at the same time can compete with streaming for available capacity. Pause downloads or other internet activity temporarily and see whether playback improves. Prime Video also advises pausing other internet activity, particularly when multiple devices are using the network. Prime Video’s troubleshooting guidance.

- Pause competing internet activity and test the stream again.
- Restart the affected streaming device, then reopen the app.
- If the issue remains, restart the router using the procedure recommended for your equipment or service.
Restart steps vary by platform, so follow the streaming service’s or device maker’s instructions rather than assuming one button sequence applies to every TV, box, or phone. Check app, browser, and playback settings
Install available updates for the streaming app, device, or browser where applicable. YouTube also lists clearing an app’s cache as a troubleshooting option on supported devices. The exact controls depend on the platform. YouTube’s video playback troubleshooting steps.

On Netflix, the Auto quality setting lets playback adapt to the connection. If you have selected a fixed quality and playback freezes or buffers, return the setting to Auto and test again; forcing a higher quality can demand more from an unstable connection. When to contact your ISP
Contact your ISP if the problem continues across multiple devices or services after you have tested the connection, reduced competing activity, improved Wi-Fi conditions, and restarted the equipment. Give them practical details: which devices are affected, whether each is connected by Wi-Fi or cable, whether another network changes the result, and whether the symptom is blur, buffering, or both. This evidence is more useful than simply reporting that streaming is slow. Netflix recommends reporting affected devices and connection types.
The checks above do not establish that you need a faster plan or replacement router. Consider equipment changes only if troubleshooting points to a persistent coverage or hardware limitation.
