If you saved an edit in Apple Photos, open the photo, tap More, then Revert to Original. If it is still open in the editor, use Undo to step back through changes—or tap Cancel and Discard Changes to abandon the unsaved edit. Clean Up edits also have a separate Reset option after saving.

Undo edits that are still open

In the Photos editor, tap Undo to reverse the most recent change. Apple’s guide says the editor’s Undo and Redo controls can handle multiple edit steps. Tap the photo to compare the current result with the original.

If you want to throw away all unsaved changes and leave the editor, tap Cancel, then Discard Changes.

Restore a photo after saving its edit

  1. Open the edited photo in the Photos app.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Tap Revert to Original.

Apple documents this control as restoring a saved photo or video to its original state. The steps are described in Apple’s guide to undoing and reverting photo edits on iPhone. Menu labels or placement may differ with the iOS version installed.

Undo an edit made with Clean Up

Clean Up is Apple Intelligence’s tool for removing distracting objects from photos. If you are still editing, tap Undo to restore something you removed. To undo Clean Up changes after saving, open the photo in the editor, choose Clean Up, then tap Reset, following Apple’s Clean Up instructions.

Clean Up is not available on every iPhone or in every language or region; Apple outlines its availability in its Apple Intelligence Photos guide. If Clean Up is unavailable or is not the tool you used, a saved edit in Photos can still be reverted through More > Revert to Original.

What iCloud Photos means for the original

With iCloud Photos enabled, edits to photos and videos are saved across devices. A second device synced to the same library should not be treated as a guaranteed untouched copy of the pre-edit photo. If you need a separate original, its availability depends on whether you independently exported or backed it up; Apple’s reviewed guidance does not establish that a separate copy exists automatically.
