Some Bose Bluetooth speakers are waterproof, but protection is model-specific. Current SoundLink Micro, Flex, Plus and Max models are identified by Bose as IP67 products (check the exact regional specification for your unit). For the SoundLink Flex, Bose specifies temporary immersion for up to 30 minutes at a depth of up to 1 m (3.3 ft). That permits rain, splashes and an accidental drop in shallow water; it does not make the speaker an underwater device. Rinse away salt or pool chemicals, let the USB-C connector dry completely and never charge the speaker while it is wet.
What “waterproof” means for a Bose speaker
Bose does not assign one water-resistance rating to every Bluetooth speaker it has made. The rating belongs to a particular model and, in some cases, a particular generation or regional specification. Look for an IP code in the product listing, user guide or label on your exact speaker rather than assuming that a SoundLink name guarantees the same protection across the range.

IP67 is a bounded protection claim. In the IP code, the first digit, 6, indicates the highest common dust-protection level (dust-tight). The second digit, 7, refers to temporary immersion under defined laboratory conditions. It is not a promise that a speaker can play underwater, withstand any depth, or survive every type of water exposure.

Bose’s SoundLink Flex user guide describes the product as “waterproof, splash resistant, and dust proof.” The same guide states that it can be immersed for up to 30 minutes at a depth of up to 3.3 ft (1 m). Those limits are the practical boundary for the Flex’s IP67 claim, not a target for routine underwater use.

Which current SoundLink models have IP67 protection?
Bose’s current waterproof range highlights four portable models. Their size, battery capacity and extra features matter as much as the rating when you choose one for travel or outdoor use.
| Model | Water and dust protection | Published play time | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) | IP67 | Up to 12 hours at moderate volume | Balanced everyday and outdoor portability, with fuller sound than the smallest model | Immersion limit in Bose’s guide: up to 30 minutes at up to 1 m |
| SoundLink Micro Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) | IP67; Bose describes it as waterproof and dustproof | Up to 12 hours | Cycling, hiking and personal listening where a compact body and strap are useful | Follow the Micro’s own guide; do not transfer the Flex’s 30-minute wording unless Bose gives the same limit for your unit |
| SoundLink Plus Portable Speaker | IP67 in Bose’s current range | Up to 20 hours | Larger listening areas and longer sessions; supports charge-out for compatible devices | Battery figure is Bose’s published maximum, not a guaranteed runtime at every volume or temperature |
| SoundLink Max Portable Speaker | Included in Bose’s current waterproof range | Not stated in the supplied Bose specifications | Listeners wanting the largest and most powerful portable format | Confirm the exact IP rating and regional specification before relying on it around water |
“Up to” battery figures vary with volume, content, wireless use, temperature and battery condition. Bose’s 12-hour Flex figure is specified at moderate volume; the Plus figure is up to 20 hours of play time from Bose’s 2025 launch material. These are manufacturer specifications rather than independent endurance tests.

How far can you take an IP67 Bose speaker?
Rain and splashes
An IP67 SoundLink model is designed for the kinds of incidental water an outdoor speaker encounters: rain, splashing near a pool, a damp picnic table or a wet beach bag. Keep the charging port closed when the speaker is not being charged, and avoid leaving it exposed to weather for longer than necessary. Water resistance does not remove the need to protect the speaker from impact, grit and prolonged outdoor exposure.
Showers
You can use a suitably rated model in a shower area for splash exposure, but position it away from the direct spray. IP testing does not represent every combination of hot water, steam, soap, shampoo and high-pressure jets. A shelf outside the stream is safer than placing the speaker under the showerhead. Do not connect a charger in the bathroom or while the speaker is damp.
Pools and chlorinated water
An IP67 rating allows the specified temporary immersion, so an accidental fall into shallow pool water is within the type of event the rating addresses when the model’s guide gives that limit. It is not permission to keep the speaker submerged, use it as a pool float or operate it underwater. Chlorine can remain on seals and connectors; rinse the speaker with fresh water after retrieval and dry it fully before charging.

Ocean and salt water
Salt water deserves the same immediate rinse, with extra care because salt residue can remain after evaporation. Bose’s care instruction is to rinse after salt-water exposure, then ensure the connector port is fully dry. Do not assume that a brief immersion in the ocean is harmless simply because the product is rated IP67; the rating is measured with controlled fresh water, not every chemical or marine condition.

Accidental drops
Bose’s 2021 SoundLink Flex launch material says the Flex can float back to the surface after an accidental drop in a bathtub, pool or ocean. That statement is specific to the Flex and describes recovery from an accident, not a recommendation to leave the speaker floating or to treat every SoundLink model as buoyant. Retrieve any speaker promptly and follow the rinse-and-dry procedure.
What to do after the speaker gets wet
Use this sequence after rain, a splash, a pool drop or a trip to the beach. It protects the connector and removes residues that water-resistance testing does not address.

- Stop playback and disconnect power. If a cable is attached, remove it without forcing the plug. Turn the speaker off if practical.
- Rinse salt or chlorine with fresh water. Use a gentle flow, not a pressure washer or concentrated jet. This step is specifically recommended in Bose’s SoundLink Flex guidance for salt-water and chlorinated-water exposure.
- Drain the exterior. Hold the speaker with the charging opening oriented so water can run out. Do not insert tissues, pins or other objects into the port.
- Wipe the housing. Use a clean, soft cloth to remove surface water and residue. Avoid abrasive cleaners and solvents that could damage the enclosure or seals.
- Air-dry the connector completely. Leave the USB-C port open to moving room air until no moisture remains. Bose does not give a universal drying time, because temperature, humidity and the amount of water vary.
- Inspect before charging. Check that the port and plug are clean and dry and that the housing has no crack or impact damage. A damaged enclosure can compromise the protection a rating assumes.
- Charge only when dry. Bose’s guide says, “Never attempt to charge the speaker while it is wet.” If you are unsure, wait longer and test the port visually rather than taking a chance with the battery or charger.
Charging after water exposure
The USB-C connector is the most important part of post-water care. Moisture or dissolved salt in the port can create a conductive path between contacts and can corrode the connector over time. The safe rule is simple: no cable, power bank or charge-out connection until the port is completely dry.
Do not try to accelerate drying with a hair dryer, heater or compressed air. Excessive heat can affect the battery and seals, while forceful air can drive water farther into the enclosure. Let the speaker dry naturally, then use a known-good USB-C cable that matches the speaker’s requirements. The Plus model’s charge-out feature is useful outdoors, but it does not bypass the dry-port requirement.
Choosing among the water-resistant models
Because several models carry IP67, choose by portability and intended listening area rather than by the rating alone.
Best Value
- Lebakort Hard Case Compatible with Bose New SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen/Bose SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker
- Choose the Flex (2nd Gen) if you want the clearest published immersion guidance, a 12-hour moderate-volume estimate and a middle-sized speaker for travel, patios and beach days.
- Choose the Micro (2nd Gen) if weight and attachment options matter most. Its compact body and strap suit a bicycle, backpack or personal listening, while still providing the IP67 protection Bose lists.
- Choose the Plus if longer sessions and a larger sound presentation are more important than the smallest possible package. Bose lists up to 20 hours and charge-out support, alongside IP67 protection.
- Consider the Max when you want the largest, most powerful portable format. Verify the exact regional specification and care limits before taking it into water, because the supplied specifications do not state a universal battery figure or a Flex-equivalent immersion time.
For any model, check the generation name and the user guide supplied with your unit. A similarly named older speaker may have a different enclosure or no published IP rating.
What an IP rating does not cover
- Unrated models: If Bose does not publish an IP rating for your exact speaker, treat it as non-water-resistant and keep it dry.
- Deep or prolonged submersion: IP67’s temporary test does not cover diving, underwater playback or pressure at greater depths.
- High-pressure water: A hose nozzle, jet spray or waves striking the enclosure can impose forces that differ from the rating test.
- Chemicals and residue: Chlorine, salt, soap and cleaning products require rinsing and drying; the rating is not a chemical-resistance guarantee.
- Damage and wear: Cracks, a loose grille, a damaged port or an enclosure opened for repair can defeat the conditions under which the rating was established.
- Charging while wet: Water resistance protects the enclosure during exposure; it does not make an energized connector safe to use when wet.
Troubleshooting a wet Bose speaker
| Symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| The speaker will not charge after a splash | Disconnect the cable, rinse away salt or chlorine if relevant, and air-dry the USB-C port completely. Try again only when the port and plug are visibly dry. |
| Sound is muffled after immersion | Stop increasing the volume, let exterior water drain and allow the speaker to dry naturally. Do not probe the grille or use compressed air. |
| Charging stops or the connector shows residue | Remove power, rinse gently with fresh water, wipe the outside and allow complete drying. Persistent residue, corrosion or heat during charging warrants Bose support rather than repeated cable tests. |
| The enclosure is cracked or a control panel is loose | Stop treating the speaker as waterproof. Keep it dry and seek service; the original IP protection can no longer be assumed. |
| The speaker was submerged deeper or longer than the guide allows | Retrieve it, disconnect power, rinse if salt or chlorine is present, dry thoroughly and monitor it without charging while wet. Arrange service if charging, sound or controls remain abnormal. |
Do not use a failure-free assumption based on the IP label. Bose publishes the protection and care limits, but no independent cross-model failure-rate statistic is established here. Treat the rating as a boundary for reasonable use, not as insurance against every accident.
Quick Recap
A quick water-safety checklist
- Confirm the exact SoundLink model and generation.
- Verify that Bose publishes IP67 (or another applicable rating) for that unit.
- For the Flex, keep immersion to no more than 30 minutes and 1 m, and never operate it intentionally underwater.
- Keep any model out of direct shower spray, high-pressure jets and deep water.
- Rinse with fresh water after pool or ocean exposure.
- Dry the USB-C connector and plug completely before charging or using charge-out.
- Stop using the water rating if the enclosure or port is damaged.
