The Swiss National Cyber Security Centre recommends using the official app, which may offer protections such as device binding and avoids some browser-related risks. That is qualified guidance, not the result of a controlled test proving every app safer than every mobile browser. Your phone, authentication, and how you reach the bank matter whichever route you choose.
What changes when you use an app instead of a browser?
A banking app and a mobile banking website are two ways to reach your bank, but their security depends on the bank’s implementation and your setup. The Swiss National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) recommends using a financial institution’s official mobile banking app. It notes that apps may include protections such as device binding and avoid browser extensions or plug-ins that can add risk. See the NCSC’s Staying safe online guidance.

This does not establish that every app is safer than every browser configuration. A compromised phone or unsafe sign-in can put either channel at risk, and an app itself can be fake or malicious. The sensible comparison is between the specific app and mobile site your bank provides, used on your particular device.

Your phone and its software
Keep your phone’s operating system and banking app up to date, and use a screen lock. If the device is compromised, out of date, or accessible to someone else, switching from the browser to the app does not solve the underlying problem. The NCSC’s advice covers basic device and online safety practices.

Authentication and account safeguards
Use the strongest multi-factor authentication (MFA), security token, or equivalent control your bank offers. U.S. interagency guidance emphasizes MFA and layered security; it also says single-factor authentication is inadequate in many situations. The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) highlighted layered security and MFA or equivalent-strength controls in its 2021 announcement.
Strong authentication is not exclusive to apps. For example, a Monetary Authority of Singapore measure announced in 2024 applied to browser and app logins for customers who had activated a digital token. That is a Singapore-specific policy example, not a rule for banks everywhere. The MAS and Association of Banks in Singapore announcement describes the measure.

Phishing and fake apps
A fake app can imitate a bank, while a phishing message can send you to a counterfeit sign-in page. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center advises downloading apps only from trusted sources, such as official app stores or links on the bank’s own website. Verify the app publisher and avoid signing in through links in unsolicited email or text messages. The FBI’s mobile banking app advisory explains these threats.
Never give a one-time code to someone who contacts you claiming to be from your bank. A real authentication code is for you to use in the sign-in or approval process you initiated, not to disclose to a caller or texter.
Networks and sign-in links
Do not assume public Wi-Fi is secure. Whether you use the app or a browser, open the bank’s service through a trusted route: launch the verified app, type the bank’s address yourself, or use a bookmark you previously checked. Do not follow an unsolicited message link to sign in. The NCSC and FBI both warn about online threats that can affect customers across access methods.

Use the mobile site if it offers a feature or account detail you need that the app does not. Canada’s Financial Consumer Agency says a bank’s mobile site may provide a more detailed view or allow more services, though what is available depends on the bank. Its online and mobile banking guidance explains the distinction. Apply the same care to the site’s address, your device, and authentication.

How to choose and use a channel safely
- If you choose the app: Follow a link from your bank’s own website to the official app store, or locate it in the store and verify the publisher. Install updates when available.
- If you choose the browser: Type the bank’s web address yourself or use a saved, verified bookmark. Avoid sign-in links in messages.
- For either option: Keep the phone’s software current, set a screen lock, and use the bank’s strongest available MFA, token, or equivalent control.
- For either option: Do not bank on a network you do not trust, and never disclose a one-time authentication code to someone who contacts you.
- After signing in: Check transactions and report errors or suspicious activity to your bank promptly.
