If your iPhone shows SOS, SOS only, No Service, or Searching, it is not connected to your carrier’s cellular network. SOS does not restore normal calls, texts, or mobile data; emergency calls may still be possible through another available network. First try Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, restart the iPhone, and then work through the line, SIM, update, and carrier checks below.
What SOS or No Service means
Apple says that “No Service” or “Searching” means the device is not connected to a cellular network. SOS or SOS only likewise indicates that your iPhone is disconnected from its own carrier’s network. Depending on your location and which networks are available, an emergency call may still be able to use another carrier. That is not the same as ordinary cellular service being restored. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance explains the status and the steps to take.

If you need emergency help
Try an emergency call if you need immediate help, even when your usual carrier has no service. On supported iPhone models and in supported regions, Emergency SOS via satellite may provide another way to contact emergency services when cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable. Follow the onscreen instructions and move to a place with a clear view of the sky. Satellite availability depends on the model and region. Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite information describes availability and use.

1. Reconnect with Airplane Mode and restart
- Open Control Center or Settings and turn on Airplane Mode.
- Wait at least 15 seconds, then turn Airplane Mode off.
- Restart your iPhone and check whether the carrier name and signal return.
Airplane Mode can prompt the iPhone to reconnect when a cellular network is available. If it remains on SOS or No Service, continue with the checks below. Apple recommends this reconnection step.

Carrier settings updates can be relevant after changing carriers or inserting a new SIM. The labels and prompts can vary by iOS version.
3. Confirm the affected line is enabled
On an iPhone with Dual SIM, open Settings > Cellular, tap the affected line, and make sure Turn On This Line is enabled. If the line is missing from Settings, contact your carrier to check eSIM activation or obtain the correct physical SIM. Menu wording may vary by iOS version and region.

4. Check a physical SIM or eSIM
If you use a physical SIM, remove it and reinsert it, following Apple’s instructions for your iPhone model. Contact your carrier for a replacement if the SIM is damaged, does not fit, or was moved from another device. If you use an eSIM—or the cellular line is absent—ask the carrier to verify setup and activation. Apple directs customers to their carrier for replacement SIMs and eSIM setup; a SIM ejector tool is only needed for models with a physical SIM tray.

- Whether the iPhone or its IMEI has been blocked or barred.
- Whether local IMEI registration is required if you bought the iPhone outside the country or region where you are using it.
Apple notes that only the carrier can access and manage your account details. If there is an outage, account restriction, or coverage issue, phone settings alone will not restore service.
6. If traveling, check roaming
When you are outside your carrier’s home coverage area, ask the carrier whether your plan supports roaming in your location. If appropriate for your plan, turn on Data Roaming under Cellular or Cellular Data settings. The exact path varies between single-SIM and Dual SIM configurations and may differ by iOS version or region. Roaming can incur charges depending on your carrier and plan.

7. Seek device service if carrier checks find no problem
If your carrier confirms the account, coverage, and network are not the cause and the iPhone still has no cellular service, the device may need hardware service. On iPhone models running iOS 18 or later, the Apple Support app may offer additional diagnostics to help identify the issue. Diagnostic availability depends on the model and software.
Quick Recap
How to narrow down the cause
| What to check | More likely explanation | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Airplane Mode, restart, iOS or carrier settings, enabled cellular line, SIM seating | Device setting, software, or SIM setup | Try the relevant steps above; contact the carrier for SIM or eSIM activation. |
| Account status, plan, local outage or coverage, blocked device, roaming eligibility, local IMEI rules | Carrier-side or local network issue | Ask your carrier to verify the account, device status, and coverage. |
| Persistent service loss after carrier confirms there is no account or network issue | Possible iPhone hardware issue | Use Apple Support diagnostics if available, then arrange device service if needed. |
