If you want to keep access to particular games after a subscription ends, buy those games individually. On Xbox, a physical disc is the clearest way to retain a copy; on PC, purchase individual games from a storefront that fits your needs, while remembering that digital purchases are generally licenses rather than ownership of the software itself. Game Pass and other catalogs are better treated as ways to sample a wide selection, not as permanent collections.
What changes when you leave Game Pass?
Game Pass is access to a changing catalog, not a permanent collection. Xbox says subscribers can play catalog games until their subscription ends or a title leaves the service. The available games and features depend on plan, platform, region, and time. Xbox’s plan and FAQ page currently advertises 400+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, 50+ for Essential, and hundreds of PC titles for PC Game Pass; these are page snapshots, not fixed guarantees.

That model works well if you like trying many games and do not mind losing catalog access. If you want to return to a chosen game years later, an individual purchase is a closer fit. Xbox discs: the clearest console option for keeping a copy
Buying an Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc lets you retain that disc, but first confirm that the exact game works on your console and that your console can read discs. A used disc may cost less, but check what content is included and whether the game relies on online servers for features you care about.

Microsoft’s Disc-to-Digital feature can grant a limited digital entitlement for some supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs. Its August 26, 2026 announcement described an initial eligible set of thousands of titles, beginning with Xbox Insiders. To claim an eligible title, insert the disc and launch the game; the disc remains usable. Eligibility is title-specific and may change. Xbox Wire’s Disc-to-Digital announcement
The entitlement is conditional, not a free-standing digital purchase. Microsoft’s rules require you to keep the qualifying disc, permit revalidation, and allow access to be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess the disc. PC purchases: compare storefront terms, not just sale prices
Windows gives you alternatives to Game Pass: Microsoft lists Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG among the available PC storefronts. Their terms and features are not interchangeable. Other subscriptions offer breadth, not permanent access
PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium provide catalogs for PlayStation users, with access dependent on membership tier and game availability. Some catalog titles have removal dates. Premium also includes streaming options described by Sony. Ubisoft+ is another catalog route, but its access depends on the selected plan, platform, and a game’s availability on the service. These services may suit you if you want to play a range of titles temporarily. They do not solve the specific goal of keeping access to an individually chosen game when subscription access ends.

Compare the cost of games you will actually play
There is no established universal break-even point between Game Pass and buying games individually. A subscription can be economical if you sample many catalog titles; buying may suit you better if you repeatedly play a smaller set. Compare the games you realistically expect to play with their current local prices and your subscription spend, rather than assuming either route is always cheaper.
For a US reference point, Xbox Wire announced on April 21, 2026 that Game Pass Ultimate would cost $22.99 per month, down from $29.99, and PC Game Pass would cost $13.99 per month, down from $16.49.
