Yes—Anker power banks are generally allowed on U.S. passenger flights if they meet the battery-size rules, but they must travel in your carry-on, never checked baggage. A power bank up to 100 watt-hours (Wh) is generally permitted; one from 101Wh through 160Wh needs airline approval and is limited to two spare batteries. Anything above 160Wh is prohibited under the FAA passenger guidance. Your operating airline may set stricter limits, so check its current rules before flying.
What the FAA limits mean for an Anker power bank
The FAA’s U.S. passenger guidance classifies power banks as spare lithium-ion batteries. The applicable limit is based on the battery’s watt-hour rating, not simply the mAh number printed prominently in a product listing.

| Power bank capacity | FAA U.S. passenger baseline |
|---|---|
| Up to 100Wh | Generally allowed in carry-on baggage. |
| 101Wh through 160Wh | Requires airline approval; no more than two spare batteries in this range are allowed. |
| Above 160Wh | Not permitted on passenger aircraft. |
These thresholds come from the FAA’s passenger guidance. They are a U.S. baseline, not a guarantee that every airline or country applies identical rules. The FAA says airlines may impose stricter Wh or quantity limits, so confirm the policy of each operating carrier, particularly on international trips.
How to find the Wh rating on your Anker power bank
Check the power bank itself for a printed Wh rating, or consult the specification or manual for the exact model. The FAA says newer lithium-ion batteries commonly show Wh on the battery; using that marked value is simpler and more reliable than estimating from mAh.

If you need to calculate it, use the battery’s nominal voltage: Wh = volts × amp-hours. Convert mAh to amp-hours by dividing by 1,000. Do not use a USB output voltage in the calculation; the relevant voltage is the battery voltage, not the charger’s output rating. The FAA explains the formula in its lithium-battery guidance.
Anker gives illustrative conversions of 10,000mAh at 3.7V as about 37Wh and 20,000mAh at 3.7V as about 74Wh. Those figures are calculations for the stated voltage, not specifications for every power bank with the same mAh capacity. For a particular Anker model, rely on its own Wh marking or model-specific documentation. Anker’s flight-capacity information and its 20,000mAh flight guidance provide those examples.

Can you take a 20,000mAh Anker power bank on a plane?
Often, yes, but mAh alone cannot confirm eligibility. Anker’s example of a 20,000mAh battery at 3.7V works out to about 74Wh, below the FAA’s 100Wh threshold. Check the actual unit’s Wh label or model-specific specification, then check the airline’s rules; another model’s conversion or another carrier’s policy does not establish permission for your unit.
Where to pack it and how to protect it
A power bank must stay in the cabin. The FAA states: “Spare (uninstalled) lithium ion and lithium metal batteries, including power banks and cell phone battery charging cases, must be carried in carry-on baggage only.” If your carry-on is taken at the gate or planeside, remove the power bank and keep it with you in the aircraft cabin. The FAA’s full packing guidance is available at PackSafe: lithium batteries.

- Protect the power bank from impact and prevent its terminals from contacting metal objects.
- For exposed terminals, the FAA lists options such as the original retail packaging, terminal tape, a battery case, sleeve, or snug protective pouch.
- Keep loose batteries separate from metal objects.
A pouch is one possible protection method, not a required purchase.

If the exact battery is 101Wh through 160Wh, contact the operating airline and obtain approval before travel. Confirm its quantity limit as well. The FAA warns: “Many airlines, both domestic and international, may have stricter quantity and Wh limits on how many spare batteries (including power banks/portable chargers) each passenger is allowed to travel with, regardless of Wh capacity.” IATA’s operator guidance also treats larger batteries as subject to operator approval and calls for carry-on carriage and short-circuit protection: IATA passenger guidance on dangerous goods.

Do not bring a damaged or recalled battery that could spark or generate dangerous heat unless it has been made safe. If a battery overheats, swells, smokes, or catches fire during a flight, alert the crew immediately. See the FAA’s lithium-battery safety advice.
Choosing an Anker power bank for travel
Before buying or packing a unit, compare its printed Wh rating and labeling, whether its capacity suits your devices, the airline’s approval and quantity rules if it exceeds 100Wh, and whether you can protect it while keeping it accessible in your cabin bag. Confirm the exact model’s condition and documentation. A higher mAh figure by itself does not establish that a power bank is flight-eligible.
Anker lists Nano 10,000mAh power banks and gives about 37Wh as a typical 10,000mAh-at-3.7V example. Treat that as a conversion example, not blanket approval for a product category: check the specific unit and carrier rules. Anker’s capacity explanation includes its example.
Rules outside the U.S. and use during the flight
The FAA thresholds above describe U.S. passenger guidance. IATA’s operator guidance is also relevant, but these sources do not establish the rules of every country or the current policy of every airline. Check the operating carrier for each flight. The cited guidance also does not settle whether a particular airline permits using or recharging a power bank onboard; consult that airline for those rules.
