Sometimes—but there is no reliable universal figure for how much extra battery an animated watch face uses. The effect depends on the watch, the face’s functions, display mode, and settings. If you enjoy the look, keep it and compare runtime on your own device; if battery life matters more, try a simpler face and reduce other display demands.
What is known about watch faces and battery use?
Watch faces can affect battery life, but available manufacturer guidance does not isolate animation as the cause or give a general animated-versus-static percentage. Garmin says Connect IQ faces may draw more power depending on their functions, including GPS use, and warns that non-default faces may affect battery life on the vívoactive 6. That supports a possible effect, not a guaranteed penalty for animation itself. Garmin’s battery-life troubleshooting guidance and its vívoactive 6 battery assumptions do not provide a controlled animation comparison.

Google’s Wear OS battery-saving advice also suggests trying a different watch face and checking battery information, but it does not quantify the difference. Google’s Wear OS battery guidance makes face choice a reasonable troubleshooting step—not proof that every animated or third-party face drains more.

Why the display mode and face functions matter
Always On changes how the face updates
On Apple Watch, Always On dims the display and updates the interface less frequently than when the watch is in the foreground. Apple says the time and complications update once per minute while the wrist is down. This describes Apple’s low-power behavior; it is not a rule for every smartwatch, nor a measurement of animation’s battery cost. See Apple’s Always On design guidance and Always On support page.

Some faces do more than animate
A face may include changing complications, location-related functions, or other behavior. Garmin specifically identifies face functions and GPS use as possible contributors to power draw. A comparison between a feature-rich animated face and a basic static face therefore cannot automatically attribute any battery difference to animation.
Brightness and other settings can obscure the result
Brightness and Always On are among the factors Garmin recommends reviewing when trying to extend battery life. If these settings, connectivity, or daily activity change between two days, the resulting battery difference is not a clean face-to-face comparison. Google likewise recommends trying a different face as one step among broader battery checks.

How to find out whether your face costs you battery
A simple comparison on your own watch is more useful than applying a percentage from another model. Keep the comparison conditions as consistent as you reasonably can:
- Record your setup. Note the watch model and software version, face, brightness, Always On setting, and whether the face uses dynamic data or location-related functions.
- Use the animated face for a representative day. Check the battery at consistent times and follow your normal routine.
- Switch to a simpler or static face. Keep the other settings and your routine as similar as possible, then record battery at the same times.
- Repeat if your days vary. Treat the result as specific to your device and use pattern, rather than a universal estimate.
- Check battery details if runtime is still poor. Garmin’s Battery Manager glance is available on select models and can show feature usage and estimated remaining life. Google points users to battery information in the watch or companion app.
Do not compare an animated face with high brightness and Always On enabled against a static face with those demands disabled, then credit the entire difference to animation. Those are separate variables.

Keep it, simplify it, or change other settings?
| Choice | When it makes sense | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the animated face | You value its appearance and your normal-day runtime is adequate. | There is no established universal battery penalty; your result depends on the watch, face behavior, and settings. |
| Try a simpler or static face | You want to test whether the current face is contributing to shorter runtime. | Compare under similar conditions; a difference on your watch does not establish the same result for other models. |
| Keep the face and reduce display demands | You prefer the face but want to preserve more battery. | Where available, review brightness and Always On settings. The trade-off may affect visibility or convenience. |
The vívoactive 6 illustrates why model-specific estimates need their conditions attached: Garmin’s estimate uses a “Low Power Watch Face” and lists additional assumptions. It is not an animated-versus-static test and should not be used to calculate a general animation penalty.
What the evidence does not establish
- It does not establish a standard percentage of battery consumed by animation.
- It does not show that every animated face uses more power than every static face.
- It does not make Apple’s once-per-minute wrist-down updates or Garmin’s model-specific guidance applicable to all watch brands.
The documented guidance comes from manufacturers and platform support materials, not an independent controlled comparison across watches. Battery behavior can vary with the model, software, screen, face implementation, display mode, settings, and use.
