A profile keeps browsing data such as cookies, history, bookmarks, settings and extensions separate, depending on the browser; it does not automatically sign you in to websites or protect your data from someone else who can open the browser.
How to set up separate browser profiles for multiple accounts
- Create a browser profile for each context you want to keep apart, such as work and personal use.
- Give each profile a recognizable name and, where available, a distinct photo, color or icon.
- Open the profile you want to use, visit the relevant websites and sign in to the intended accounts there. Profile creation does not authenticate you to those sites.
- When switching contexts, open or switch to the matching profile rather than relying on separate tabs. A profile is a browser-level environment, not just another tab.
Set up profiles in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari
Google Chrome on a computer
- Open Chrome and select the Profile icon in the top-right corner.
- Select Add Chrome profile.
- Choose a name, photo and color scheme so the profile is easy to recognize.
- If Chrome offers Google Account sign-in, decide whether to use it. Signing in can save bookmarks, passwords and settings to that Google Account and make them available on other signed-in devices; it is optional for creating a local profile.
- To use another profile later, select the Profile icon and choose it. To show profile choices when a new browser session opens, go to Profile > Manage Chrome profile and select Show on startup.
Chrome profiles keep items such as bookmarks, history, passwords and settings separate. Google cautions that anyone with access to the device can switch profiles and see information such as visited websites. Google Chrome Help: Manage Chrome with multiple profiles.

Microsoft Edge
- Select the Profile icon in the upper-right corner of Edge.
- Select Set up a new profile.
- Choose Personal or Work or school.
- Choose Sign in to sync data or Start without your data, then confirm.
- To switch later, select the Profile icon and choose the profile. Edge opens it in a separate window.
Edge profiles personalize settings, bookmarks, extensions, themes and preferences. Choosing whether to sync during setup is separate from creating the profile itself. Microsoft Support: Sign in and create multiple profiles in Microsoft Edge.
Mozilla Firefox
Firefox’s newer profile interface is rolling out gradually, so menu wording and availability can vary by version and operating system.

- If the new interface is available, select the account icon, choose Profiles, then select + New profile.
- Follow the prompts and finish editing the new profile.
- If you do not see the new menu, enter
about:profilesin the address bar to open the legacy Profile Manager. Use it to create or launch another profile.
Firefox profiles separate bookmarks, passwords, settings, add-ons, history and browsing data such as cookies. If you only need separate site logins and cookies within one Firefox profile, Mozilla’s Multi-Account Containers add-on is a narrower alternative: it isolates cookies, logins and site data, but not the full set of profile data such as bookmarks, settings and add-ons. Safari on Mac
Safari profiles require Safari 17 or later.
- In Safari, open Safari > Settings > Profiles.
- The first time, select Start Using Profiles, then add a profile.
- Name the profile and choose its appearance and favorites options, then create it.
- To open it later, choose File > New Window > New [profile name] Window.
Safari profiles separate history, cookies, website data, extensions, Tab Groups and favorites under Apple’s documented conditions. They are not completely isolated: passwords stored in iCloud Keychain are available in any profile, and some settings and bookmark features are shared. Deleting a profile removes its tabs, history and website data. Safari profiles sync across devices using Safari 17 or later when those devices use the same Apple Account and Safari is enabled in iCloud. Profiles organize browsing; they do not secure a shared device
Browser profiles are useful for keeping routine work and personal activity apart, but they are not a privacy barrier against another person who can use your device. Someone with device access may be able to switch to a profile and view its browsing information. On a shared computer, use separate operating-system accounts for people who should not see one another’s activity, and lock your session when you step away.
