Yes. Animal experiments remain part of space research, especially studies using mice and other rodent models. NASA’s current animal-biology program examines how organisms adapt to microgravity and other spacecraft conditions, and NASA planning documents describe an International Space Station (ISS) Rodent Research Facility for mice, with rat capability and centrifuge technology under development. At the same time, NASA solicitations allow researchers to use human-cell cultures, tissues, organoids, microphysiological systems and microbial models when those methods can answer the question.

That means the modern answer is not “animals or alternatives.” It is a regulated choice among several models. Animal studies are permitted only under formal welfare oversight, while the agency applies replacement, reduction and refinement principles and recognizes that animal results do not automatically predict human outcomes.

What animal experiments are still used in space research?

NASA’s Animal Biology Program studies how animals respond to spacecraft conditions, including altered gravity, in order to identify hazards relevant to human exploration. Rodents remain particularly useful because their physiology can reveal whole-body changes in bone, muscle, metabolism, reproduction and other systems that isolated cells cannot reproduce on their own.

NASA planning documents identify a rodent facility for mice on the ISS. They also discuss capability for rats and centrifuges that could expose animals to controlled levels of gravity. These plans show that vertebrate experiments remain an active tool in space biology, even as non-animal methods expand.

Mice on the International Space Station

ISS mouse studies have examined biological pathways associated with spaceflight effects such as bone loss. A recent peer-reviewed review describes this work while warning that differences between mouse and human biology limit direct translation. A result in a mouse pathway can identify a mechanism worth investigating; it is not, by itself, proof that the same intervention will work in astronauts.

What “still used” means

NASA’s public program descriptions and solicitations establish that animal research remains eligible and supported. They do not mean that every experiment uses animals, that every proposal is approved, or that a particular study is flying at this moment. The exact model depends on the scientific question, the mission environment and the available validated endpoints.

Why send animals into space when alternatives exist?

Spaceflight combines conditions that are difficult to reproduce together on Earth: microgravity or partial gravity, radiation, confinement, altered circadian cues, limited room and tightly scheduled operations. A living animal integrates those exposures across multiple organs over time. That whole-organism response can answer questions that a dish of cells or a computer model cannot yet resolve.

Questions that require a whole organism

  • How changes in gravity affect several interacting systems, such as bone, muscle, circulation and immune function.
  • How an exposure develops over the duration of a mission rather than during a short laboratory treatment.
  • How metabolism, hormones and behavior influence one another under spacecraft conditions.
  • Whether a candidate countermeasure produces unexpected effects elsewhere in the body.

These advantages are balanced against substantial constraints. Space hardware has limited mass, volume and power. Crew time is scarce, containment must be reliable, and launch or operational failures can compromise an entire experiment. Animal studies also carry an ethical burden that cell or computational systems do not.

Why a cell or organoid may not be enough

Human-cell cultures, organoids and organs-on-chips can model selected tissues with strong human relevance, but they generally omit the complete interactions among organs, circulation, immune signaling and behavior. They are therefore powerful for focused mechanisms and screening, while an animal model may be selected for an integrated response. The appropriate choice is question-specific rather than a ranking in which one model always replaces another.

What rules protect animals used in space research?

NASA’s Flight Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees animal research conducted in flight and space, including ISS investigations. NASA states that its IACUCs follow the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Regulations, Public Health Service (PHS) Policy, the National Academies’ Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, NASA’s own ethical principles and applicable NASA directives.

Requirements for NASA awardees

An NIH–NASA laboratory-animal-welfare memorandum announced on November 7, 2024, states that NASA-supported awardees using live vertebrate animals or higher-order cephalopods must comply with the Animal Welfare Act and its regulations, PHS Policy and related guidance. The obligations apply to covered work performed by awardees, not only to experiments physically located at a NASA center.

NASA’s stated ethical principles

NASA’s chief-veterinary policy grounds animal stewardship in “respect for life, societal benefit, and nonmaleficence.” NASA also states: “Animals used in NASA-supported research or training receive humane and responsible care and use in accordance with federal regulations, institutional policies, and guidelines.” Those principles frame animal use as permissible only when the expected societal benefit and scientific justification outweigh the harms and when applicable protections are in place.

How approval and oversight work in practice

Before an experiment can proceed, investigators must describe the scientific objective, explain why the chosen model is necessary, specify the number of animals, detail procedures and endpoints, and provide plans for care, monitoring and humane intervention. The responsible IACUC and veterinary staff review those elements under the governing regulations and policies. Flight research adds operational reviews because habitats, transport, containment and crew procedures must work safely in a spacecraft environment.

Human-research and medical oversight interfaces

NASA’s Office of the Chief Health and Medical Officer (OCHMO) reports continuing oversight of research across NASA centers and the ISS, including coordination with the European Space Agency (ESA) on a consent template. The OCHMO Annual Report 2024 records that “In 2024, the HRMRB reviewed 154 submissions.” That figure is a NASA-published count of submissions reviewed by its Human Research Multilateral Review Board during 2024; it is not a count of animal experiments or a claim that all submissions were approved.

What oversight does not guarantee

Regulatory approval does not make an experiment risk-free or remove scientific uncertainty. It establishes a review process, welfare requirements and accountability. Researchers still have to show that the model is suitable, that the number of animals is justified and that procedures are refined to reduce pain, distress and unnecessary suffering.

The 3Rs: replacement, reduction and refinement

NIH describes the 3Rs as core expectations for responsible animal research. NASA’s solicitations similarly permit non-animal platforms when they are scientifically appropriate.

Replacement

Replacement means using a non-animal method instead of a live animal whenever that method can answer the question. Examples include human-cell culture, organoids, microphysiological systems, computational models and microbial systems. Replacement can be absolute, when no animal is used, or relative, when a lower-sentience model substitutes for a more complex one.

Reduction

Reduction means obtaining the needed information with fewer animals. Researchers may use better experimental design, shared control data, repeated measurements from the same subject, or complementary non-animal tests. Reduction is not simply cutting a sample size: too few animals can produce inconclusive results and expose animals without generating usable knowledge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refinement

Refinement means changing housing, handling, procedures, anesthesia, analgesia, monitoring or humane endpoints to minimize pain and distress. In space studies, refinement also involves habitat design, environmental monitoring, transport procedures and contingency plans for equipment or health problems.

Can organoids and organs-on-chips replace animal experiments in space?

They can replace some experiments, but not all of them yet. NASA solicitation language explicitly allows cell and tissue culture, microphysiological systems, organoids and microbial models when the selected platform supports the scientific objective. NIH also highlights human-based science and other new approach methodologies (NAMs).

Where NAMs are especially useful

  • Human relevance: human cells can avoid some species-specific differences that complicate translation from rodents.
  • Mechanism studies: organoids and tissue models can isolate pathways such as bone remodeling or immune signaling.
  • Screening: many candidate exposures or countermeasures can be compared before any animal work is considered.
  • Computational prediction: in-silico models can integrate datasets, test hypotheses and identify experiments with the highest expected value.

Where limitations remain

NAMs may not reproduce the complete interaction of organs, endocrine regulation, circulation, behavior and long-duration adaptation. Their space-environment fidelity also varies. A model may simulate microgravity-related mechanical loading but not radiation, confinement and mission timing at the same time. Validation is therefore essential: researchers need reliable, accepted readouts showing that the model predicts the phenomenon being studied.

How to compare an animal model with an alternative

The most defensible method comparison uses the same criteria for every platform. A model that is excellent on one dimension can be weak on another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Criterion Questions to ask Typical trade-off
Human relevance Does the model predict human physiology or disease, and how large are species differences? Human-cell systems may be more directly relevant; whole-animal systems capture integrated physiology.
Space-environment fidelity Can it reproduce microgravity or partial gravity, radiation, confinement and mission timing? Flight hardware can expose a living organism to combined conditions; ground or in-vitro systems may isolate only selected factors.
Ethical burden Can the work replace animals, reduce numbers or refine procedures? Non-animal methods generally have lower welfare burden, while animal studies require formal justification and oversight.
Validation and endpoints Are the measurements validated for the specific question? A technically sophisticated model is not useful if its readouts do not predict the outcome of interest.
Flight practicality What mass, volume, power, crew time, containment and operational risk are required? Small cell systems may be easier to fly; animal habitats provide broader biology but require more infrastructure.
Translation, uncertainty and cost What uncertainty remains, and what resources are needed to resolve it? Animals can reveal unexpected whole-body effects but still leave species and mission uncertainties; alternatives can be cheaper or scalable but may need further validation.

What kinds of findings do animal studies contribute?

Bone and muscle changes

Reduced loading in microgravity affects the skeleton and muscles. Rodent studies can track changes across tissues and over time, helping investigators identify pathways and evaluate potential countermeasures. The mouse work discussed in recent reviews includes pathways involved in bone loss, but the same reviews caution against treating those findings as direct human predictions.

System-wide adaptation

Spaceflight can alter several physiological systems at once. A whole-organism model allows researchers to observe interactions that are difficult to reconstruct from separate cultures. That does not make the model automatically superior; it makes it suitable for questions in which system-level interaction is the endpoint.

Model-organism research beyond rodents

NASA describes model-organism research broadly. The program’s scope includes studying adaptation to spacecraft conditions and altered gravity, while current solicitations permit a range of animal and non-animal systems. The available data does not establish that every model organism is currently flown, so claims about a particular species should be tied to a documented experiment rather than generalized from the program category.

What are the main scientific limits of animal experiments in space?

  • Species differences: anatomy, metabolism, immune responses and life histories can differ from humans.
  • Small habitats: limited volume can affect movement, social behavior and environmental exposure.
  • Flight constraints: launch loads, mass limits, power availability and operational interruptions can change the experiment.
  • Short or atypical missions: an animal’s exposure may not match the duration or schedule of a human mission.
  • Cost and logistics: transport, containment, monitoring and recovery require specialized resources.
  • Confounding stressors: handling, vibration, noise, diet and altered light cycles can influence outcomes alongside gravity or radiation.

These limitations are why NASA and peer-reviewed reviewers present animal data as one part of a broader evidence chain. Findings are stronger when they agree with human-cell, computational, ground-based and clinical evidence.

Are animals still sent into space for experiments?

Yes, rodents have been used in spaceflight research, and NASA continues to describe facilities and studies for animal work in orbit. The ISS rodent facility for mice is the clearest current example in NASA planning material. Rat capability and centrifuge development are also described as enabling technologies.

“Still used” should not be read as “used without limits.” Every proposed experiment remains subject to scientific review, animal-care oversight and operational constraints. Some questions are now better addressed with NAMs, and NASA’s solicitation framework permits those alternatives when they are fit for purpose.

What is likely to change next?

The direction is toward a mixed toolkit rather than an immediate end to all animal studies. Better organoids, organs-on-chips, microphysiological systems and computational methods can replace targeted experiments, reduce the number of animals needed for follow-up work and refine the questions sent to flight facilities.

Animal research is most defensible when investigators demonstrate that the question requires an integrated organism, explain why a validated alternative cannot answer it, use the smallest scientifically justified sample and apply refined care. As NAM validation improves, the balance can shift toward human-based methods without assuming that every whole-body question has already been solved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for readers

NASA still permits and conducts animal experiments in space research, particularly rodent studies connected with adaptation to microgravity and other spacecraft hazards. The work operates under IACUC, veterinary, Animal Welfare Act, PHS, ILAR and NASA-policy requirements. NASA’s stated principles are respect for life, societal benefit and nonmaleficence.

At the same time, organoids, human-cell cultures, microphysiological systems, microbial models and computational approaches are explicitly part of the research landscape. The ethical and scientific question is not whether one model wins universally. It is whether the chosen method can answer the specific question with adequate human relevance, space-environment fidelity, validated endpoints and the lowest practical ethical burden.
