AI chatbots are not private confidants by default. They may sound empathetic, but your messages are handled by a service that can store, log, review, or otherwise process them under its policies. Use the minimum context needed, remove names and unique identifiers, and keep secrets, credentials, financial records, confidential work, and complete medical histories out of ordinary chats.
A chatbot can help you reflect, organize thoughts, explain a topic, or brainstorm. It is not a therapist, doctor, lawyer, emergency service, or guaranteed confidential relationship. Before sharing anything sensitive, check the exact app, model, plan, account type, and country-specific terms.

Why chatbots feel safe when they are not necessarily private
Modern conversational systems are designed to respond in a warm, human-like way. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says chatbots can “effectively mimic human characteristics, emotions, and intentions.” That design can encourage people to treat a system like a friend or confidant, particularly children and teenagers. A fluent, sympathetic reply is evidence of good language generation—not proof that a human is listening, that the service will keep a secret, or that the information will never be reused.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe FTC is examining how companion-style chatbot companies disclose capabilities, collect and handle conversation data, test harms, and use or share personal information. The agency’s 2025 inquiry places special emphasis on youth disclosures, age restrictions, and potential harms. A child may not understand that a seemingly private conversation is taking place on a commercial platform with its own retention and data-use rules.

There is also a practical security issue. NIST’s 2025 chatbot security draft identifies prompt injection, hallucinations, data exposure, and unauthorized access as threats. A chatbot can accidentally reveal information from a connected source, follow a malicious instruction embedded in a document, or generate a confident but wrong answer. Privacy and reliability are separate questions: even a service that protects stored data can still give unsafe advice.
What happens to a message after you send it
Your prompt normally travels to a provider’s servers, is processed by a model, and may be written to several systems. Depending on the service and plan, copies can exist in chat history, memory features, abuse-monitoring logs, support systems, backups, analytics tools, or connected applications. Deleting a visible conversation may not instantly remove every copy.
Training and model improvement
Some consumer services allow conversations to be used to improve models unless you switch the option off. Others set different defaults for business, education, or API accounts. OpenAI says individual users can choose how data is used, delete memories, conversations, and account data, and that content is encrypted at rest and in transit. Those controls are useful, but they apply to the relevant product and account settings—not automatically to every chatbot.

The same documentation says abuse-monitoring logs may contain prompts and responses and are retained for up to 30 days by default, unless a longer period is legally or operationally necessary. “Not used for training” therefore does not mean “never retained” or “never accessible.”

Third-party processing
Plugins, connectors, custom actions, browser extensions, and other integrations can send part of your conversation to another company. OpenAI’s app guidance says information sent to a connected third party follows that provider’s storage, processing, and data-residency terms. Treat every integration as a separate processor. A private setting in the main chatbot cannot override a partner’s retention policy.
How sensitive people already consider chatbot conversations
A 2025 survey experiment of 300 US ChatGPT users found that 82% rated chatbot conversations as sensitive or highly sensitive. Nearly half said they had discussed health topics, and more than one-third had discussed personal finances with ChatGPT. Those figures show why ordinary “just chatting” can create consequential exposure: people often disclose the very categories of information that are hardest to change after a breach.
Sensitivity is contextual. A first name may be harmless alone, but a first name combined with a small town, employer, diagnosis, and appointment date can identify someone. The safest approach is to evaluate the complete prompt and any files, not individual details in isolation.
What you can safely share
Start with low-risk requests that do not require your identity. Ask for a checklist, an explanation of a concept, a rewrite of text after removing identifiers, or brainstorming with fictional examples. If personal context is necessary, provide the smallest useful slice.

Use abstraction and placeholders
- Replace a person’s name with
Person Aand an employer withCompany X. - Change an exact address to a broad region and an exact date to a month or relative time.
- Remove account numbers, ticket numbers, URLs containing private tokens, and document metadata.
- Describe a medical issue generally rather than pasting a complete record.
- Summarize a contract or dispute instead of uploading the entire confidential file.
For example, instead of writing “My manager at [specific company] rejected my accommodation request on 14 October after my diagnosis of…,” ask, “How can an employee respond when a manager rejects a workplace accommodation?” Add only the facts needed to distinguish the possible options.
Keep prompts reversible
Before sending, ask whether the answer would still be useful if every identifying detail were removed. If yes, remove it. If no, consider asking a qualified professional who has a defined confidentiality duty or using an approved organizational system with a written data agreement.
What to keep completely private
Do not paste secrets that could directly enable fraud, account takeover, identity theft, or a breach of someone else’s trust.

- Complete medical records, therapy notes, psychiatric assessments, or detailed trauma histories.
- Legal case files, settlement communications, or information covered by a professional duty of confidentiality.
Even when a provider says it does not train on your data by default, retention for abuse monitoring, support, backups, logs, or connected services can still apply. A “private” or “incognito” chat label should not be treated as a promise that no operational copy exists.

Is it safe to tell an AI about trauma or mental-health concerns?
You may use a chatbot for low-stakes reflection—for example, turning feelings into a journal prompt, listing questions to ask a therapist, or practicing how to start a difficult conversation. Keep the description general and omit names, locations, dates, workplace details, and other clues that identify you or another person.
Do not treat the chatbot as a therapist or crisis responder. It can misunderstand, reinforce an inaccurate interpretation, or miss signs that require immediate human help. For self-harm, abuse, a medical emergency, or an urgent mental-health concern, contact a qualified professional, a local emergency service, or an appropriate crisis resource. OpenAI says its trusted-contact feature is “not an emergency service, crisis response system, or substitute for mental health care.” That limitation applies to the purpose of such a feature; a chatbot’s reassuring tone does not change it.
Should you share medical information?
Share only a de-identified summary when you need general educational information. For example, ask what questions to discuss with a clinician about a medication side effect, rather than uploading your full chart. Do not rely on a chatbot to diagnose you, interpret urgent symptoms, calculate a safe dose, or replace a clinician who knows your history.
Medical details are especially difficult to anonymize. A rare condition, small community, treatment date, and provider name may identify a person even without a name. If a healthcare organization is using an AI tool, ask which account or enterprise arrangement applies, where data is stored, who can access it, how long it is retained, and whether the organization has approved that use.
Best Value
Can AI chats be used against you?
Potentially, yes. A provider may be required to disclose data under law, an attacker may obtain an account, an employee may access information under internal procedures, or a connected service may process the prompt under its own terms. The exact risk depends on the provider, jurisdiction, account, retention period, security controls, and the content itself.
Do not assume that a conversation is privileged in the way a lawyer-client or clinician-patient communication may be. If a disclosure could harm your employment, finances, legal position, safety, or another person, do not put the identifying version into a general-purpose chatbot.
Before you confide: a privacy checklist
- Identify the exact service. Confirm the app, model, plan, account type, and country or region. Consumer, business, education, and API products can have different rules.
- Read the current privacy policy and data controls. Look specifically for training or model-improvement use, human review, retention, legal disclosures, and international transfers.
- Disable optional training sharing. Turn off model-improvement use where the service permits it, then verify whether the setting applies to existing chats or only future ones.
- Review memory and chat history. Check what is saved, how to inspect or delete memories, and whether deleting a conversation also removes associated files or derived information.
- Secure the account. Enable multi-factor authentication and use a unique password. Protect the email account that controls recovery.
- Check deletion, export, and retention controls. Find the process for deleting the account and requesting data. Do not assume deletion instantly removes backups, abuse logs, or legally retained records.
- Audit integrations. Review every plugin, connector, custom action, extension, or mobile permission. Read the third party’s storage, processing, access, and data-residency terms.
- Minimize the prompt. Remove names, exact locations, dates, identifiers, attachments, and secrets. Re-read the final text as if it were public.
- Set a youth rule. Children and teens need extra caution because the FTC is specifically examining companion-chatbot disclosures, age limits, and use or sharing of conversation data.
- Plan an escalation path. Decide in advance which clinician, lawyer, security team, trusted adult, or emergency service you will contact when the issue exceeds a chatbot’s role.
How to compare chatbot privacy before using one
Product claims change, so compare the current policy for the exact plan and geography rather than relying on a brand-wide statement.
| Question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Training or improvement | Are prompts used by default? Is opt-out available, and does it cover past chats? | A no-training promise does not answer retention or access questions. |
| Retention | How long are chats, files, backups, support records, and abuse-monitoring logs kept? | Longer retention creates a longer window for access, disclosure, or breach. |
| Memory and deletion | Can you inspect, correct, export, and delete memories and conversations? | Visible chat deletion may not remove every derived or backed-up copy. |
| Security | Is data encrypted in transit and at rest? Are multi-factor authentication and access alerts available? | Account compromise can expose the entire conversation history. |
| Third-party sharing | Which connectors receive prompts, and where do those providers store data? | Each connected service adds another set of terms and processors. |
| Youth and crisis safeguards | What age limits, disclosures, reporting tools, and crisis boundaries exist? | Human-like responses can be especially persuasive to young or distressed users. |
| Enterprise or regulated-data terms | Is there a written agreement covering access, retention, residency, and approved use? | Consumer settings may not satisfy professional confidentiality obligations. |
If you already shared something sensitive
- Stop sending additional details and disconnect any unnecessary integrations.
- Delete the conversation, saved memory, uploaded files, and account data using the service’s controls.
- Change any exposed password, revoke API keys or sessions, and replace recovery codes. Do this from a trusted device.
- Contact your employer, client, clinician, lawyer, bank, or identity-support service if the disclosure affects their information or your obligations.
- Review account access logs and enable multi-factor authentication if it was not already active.
- Ask the provider what deletion and retention process applies. Keep the request and any response for your records.
If you submitted an authentication code, private key, payment details, or another credential, treat it as compromised even if the chat was later deleted. Rotation or cancellation is safer than relying on a deletion confirmation.
A simple decision rule
Use a chatbot when the task remains useful after anonymization and the consequences of disclosure are low. Pause when the prompt contains a secret, an identifiable third party, a complete health or legal history, regulated data, or confidential work material. In those cases, either remove the sensitive content or use a service whose contractual and technical protections have been verified for that purpose.
