Not automatically. A prop’s safety depends on its finished shape and how it affects the wearer—not simply on whether it is 3D-printed or lightweight. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be made of soft, flexible material. A rigid printed weapon-like prop does not meet that recommendation; choose a soft, flexible alternative instead.
What to check on a 3D-printed prop
Inspect the completed item before taking it out. These practical checks are not a 3D-print-specific test or official pass/fail standard.

- Look for hard points, sharp edges, burrs, cracks, loose attachments, or protruding parts that could scratch, snag, or strike someone.
- Check that the child can carry it without losing balance, tripping, or having trouble walking and crossing streets.
- Make sure it does not block the wearer’s vision, catch on the costume, or interfere with movement.
- Consider whether it will remain intact during use rather than leaving loose or broken pieces.
If the prop resembles a sword or knife and is rigid, CPSC’s advice favors a soft, flexible costume accessory instead. The recommendation concerns the finished accessory; it does not establish that all 3D prints are unsafe.

A prop should not cover reflective details or make it harder for a child to see and move. CPSC recommends reflective tape on costumes and treat bags, and flashlights so children can see and be seen. Reflective tape and a flashlight serve complementary visibility purposes; neither makes an unsuitable prop safe.

Prop checks are only one part of pedestrian safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends using a buddy system, following road rules and signals, and crossing at crosswalks or intersections where possible. It cautions that children may dart into streets unexpectedly.
What official guidance does—and does not—say
CPSC’s Halloween advice says, “Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be made of soft, flexible material.” It also advises choosing costumes that fit well and do not drag; masks should fit securely, allow ventilation, and have eye openings large enough for full vision. These recommendations help assess the accessory and the costume together.

The reviewed official Halloween sources do not determine whether PLA, ABS, PETG, resin, paint, clear coat, or sanding residue is safe for skin contact, mouthing, or prolonged wear. They do not support labeling a filament or finish “non-toxic” or “child-safe.” Such a claim would require authoritative advice covering the specific material, coating, exposure route, and intended user.

CPSC reported an annual average of 3,600 Halloween-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments over the three years preceding its October 2021 release. It attributed 27% to falls while putting up or taking down decorations, tripping on costumes, or walking while trick-or-treating. Those figures cover Halloween injuries broadly, not injuries caused by printed props.
