If your Samsung phone stays black after a force restart, connect it to a compatible charger and working outlet, then give it time to respond. A deeply discharged Galaxy may not show a charging icon immediately. Check the phone and charging accessories for damage first; then try another compatible charger and cable if available. Once it has had time to charge, repeat the restart using the Side/Power and Volume Down buttons together.
1. Check the phone and charging equipment before connecting it
Look for visible impact or liquid damage on the phone, and inspect the charger, cable, and connectors. Do not use charging equipment that is worn or damaged, or a cable or port with bent, broken, corroded, or obstructed connectors. Samsung US advises keeping a wet device disconnected from chargers and accessories until it is fully dry. If you suspect liquid has entered the phone, do not charge it; seek professional guidance instead. Samsung US troubleshooting guidance and Samsung Philippines guidance cover these precautions.

2. Let a fully drained battery charge
Connect the phone to a compatible charger and a working wall outlet. A completely depleted Galaxy may remain black and show no charging indicator at first. Samsung Canada recommends leaving a drained device connected for 15–20 minutes before trying another force restart; that interval is region-specific guidance, not a guaranteed wait time for every model. Samsung Philippines notes that charging time varies by model and that several minutes may be needed. 3. Rule out a charger, cable, or outlet problem
If there is still no charging icon after a few minutes, try another compatible charger and USB cable, if available, and use an outlet you know works. Samsung recommends an approved or certified charger and cable. Because the Galaxy model is unknown, check compatibility for your exact phone rather than assuming a particular wattage, connector, or adapter will fit. Samsung India’s troubleshooting steps and Samsung Canada’s battery guidance recommend checking the charging setup.

4. Repeat the force restart with both buttons held together
- Remove the case if it gets in the way of pressing both buttons at once.
- Press and hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down simultaneously.
- Keep holding until the phone restarts or the Samsung logo appears, then release. Samsung India specifies at least seven seconds; other Samsung regional guidance gives different timing, and the delay can vary by model. Samsung India’s restart instructions, Samsung US guidance, and Samsung Canada guidance describe the procedure.
A force restart is not a factory reset. Samsung Philippines says that performing the forced restart correctly does not erase information.
5. Select Normal Boot if a menu appears
If the phone opens Maintenance Boot Mode instead of starting normally, use the volume keys to highlight Normal Boot, then press the Side/Power button to select it. Samsung Gulf describes this recovery step in its Galaxy power troubleshooting guidance. Do not choose a factory-reset option as a substitute for restarting: a factory reset removes personal data.

6. Get the phone inspected if it remains unresponsive
If the phone does not respond after charging with working compatible equipment and repeating the force restart, contact Samsung support or arrange inspection at a service center. Do the same if the device shows signs of impact or liquid damage. A black screen alone cannot establish whether the phone is off or whether its display has failed; remote troubleshooting cannot determine the cause.
