The steps below are Capcom’s current guidance for the Monster Hunter Wilds base game on PC; use them as a diagnostic sequence, not as a guarantee that Ascendance will behave identically. Check Ascendance’s official requirements and patch notes when they are published. Capcom producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has said the team is applying lessons from Wilds’ PC launch to Ascendance, but that development effort is not a performance guarantee. GamesRadar+, September 22, 2026.
1. Check your PC against the base game’s requirements
Before changing settings, confirm that your PC meets the published requirements for Monster Hunter Wilds. The Steam listing calls for DirectX 12, 16 GB of system RAM, 75 GB of free storage, and an SSD. Its minimum GPU examples are an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 with 6 GB of VRAM or an AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT with 8 GB. Recommended examples are an RTX 2060 Super with 8 GB or a Radeon RX 6600 with 8 GB. These are listed configurations, not a promise that every PC with similar specifications will deliver the same frame rate. Steam system requirements.

The store’s performance targets have specific settings attached: the listed minimum target is 1080p at 30 FPS using upscaling from 720p at the Lowest preset; the recommended target is 1080p at 60 FPS on Medium with Frame Generation enabled. Neither target means native 1080p rendering in every configuration. If a system meets minimum but not recommended requirements, Capcom advises lowering graphics settings.

If the game is not already on a suitable SSD, check the computer’s supported drive interface and form factor before considering an upgrade. An SSD is a listed requirement, but changing storage alone is not an established fix for every kind of stutter or frame drop.

2. Lower graphics settings and compare the same scene
Capcom recommends setting Graphics Settings to Low or Medium when settings are causing an unstable frame rate or launch problems. Lower the demanding settings, then compare the same location or activity before and after. Change one setting at a time and keep track of the original values; this makes it easier to identify which change helped rather than guessing.
There is no universally best preset established for every PC. If lowering settings does not change the symptom, look at the other possible causes below instead of continuing to reduce image quality without evidence that graphics load is the bottleneck. 3. Update Windows and your graphics driver
Capcom warns that outdated graphics drivers can cause freezing and other problems. Install current updates appropriate for your GPU from its manufacturer, update Windows, and reboot. Capcom’s thread also recommends restarting after a clean graphics-driver installation. Driver versions and known issues change, so use the GPU maker’s current guidance rather than relying on an old version number.
4. Verify game files; clear shader caches only when appropriate
Verify the Steam installation
- In Steam, open your Library and right-click Monster Hunter Wilds.
- Select Properties, then Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and let Steam finish checking.
Verification can replace missing or corrupted downloaded files. Capcom notes that local configuration files may fail validation normally, so a validation notice for such files does not necessarily mean the process failed.

Consider deleting the shader-cache files if stability remains a problem
Capcom suggests deleting shader.cache and shader.cache2 from the game’s installation directory if those files are present. This is not a necessary first step for every frame-rate issue. The game may need to rebuild shader data afterward, which can involve temporary compilation work.
5. Test without overlays and heavy background apps
Recording software, performance overlays, and other resource-heavy applications can affect performance or stability. Close them for one comparison run, then check the same activity again. If the result improves, reopen the apps one at a time to identify which one changes performance. This is a reversible diagnostic test, not a reason to permanently disable tools you need.

6. Make sure a laptop uses its dedicated GPU and power supply
On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, check that the game is assigned to the high-performance GPU. Also connect the charger and review the power settings. Windows menu labels and locations vary across OS builds and hardware, so consult the laptop maker’s instructions if the setting is not where expected. Capcom recommends these checks for systems that may be using the wrong GPU or power mode.
7. Check for heat-related performance changes
If frame rates worsen after playing for a while, heat may be contributing to instability. Make sure vents are unobstructed and the laptop or desktop has adequate ventilation; Capcom also suggests lowering graphics settings or limiting frame rate to reduce heat. Use the PC or component maker’s approved tools to check temperatures and cooling. The available guidance does not establish a single temperature threshold that applies to all hardware.

8. Check the High Resolution Texture Pack if symptoms began after installing it
Capcom says the optional High Resolution Texture Pack requires at least 16 GB of graphics memory to install and warns that insufficient VRAM can cause instability regardless of the Texture Quality setting. If the problem started after installing the pack, disable it in Steam’s Properties → DLC list, then restart Steam. This check is specifically relevant to PCs with the pack installed; it is not a blanket recommendation to remove other content. High Resolution Texture Pack listing.
9. Report a reproducible problem to Capcom
If the issue persists, record when and where it happens and the steps that reproduce it. Capcom asks users reporting problems to include:
- CPU, GPU and VRAM, system RAM, operating system, and graphics-driver version
- Security software and display details
- Your region, the affected location or mode, and whether the issue is constant or occurs only at particular times
- Reproduction steps and a copy of the game’s
