Choose ArchiveWeb.page—Webrecorder’s browser-led capture tool—if you want to record a page as you browse and replay or export that session for offline use. They solve different archiving problems, so neither is a universal winner.
What each tool is for
ArchiveBox: a managed collection of URLs
ArchiveBox is a self-hosted application for preserving supplied URLs and organizing them into a collection. Its documentation describes importing URLs individually or from sources such as bookmarks, browser history, social feeds, RSS, Pocket, and Pinboard, as well as scheduling recurring imports. You can interact with it through a command-line interface, web interface, browser extension, Python/API access, and the filesystem. The project currently recommends Docker Compose for most installations. See the ArchiveBox 0.9.71 documentation for its feature overview; installation guidance and versions can change.

Depending on the capture and configuration, ArchiveBox can save original HTML, a SingleFile HTML copy, screenshots, PDFs, WARC files, extracted article text and metadata, and media or repository content. This range is useful for building a browsable personal archive, but having several output types does not guarantee that every page element or authenticated state will be preserved.

ArchiveWeb.page: capture while you browse
Webrecorder is a project with multiple tools, not one direct equivalent to ArchiveBox. For personal, interactive recording, the relevant product is ArchiveWeb.page. Use its Chromium extension or standalone application to record pages while browsing; captures are organized into sessions that can be viewed offline and exported as WARC or WACZ. ReplayWeb.page is the related browser-based archive viewer.

Which is better for your archiving workflow?
| Your priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Import many URLs, feeds, or bookmarks | ArchiveBox | Its documented workflow accepts lists and several import sources. |
| Keep a recurring collection up to date | ArchiveBox | Its current documentation describes scheduled imports. |
| Record a page by navigating and interacting with it | ArchiveWeb.page | Capture is centered on the browser session you perform. |
| Export a browser-recorded session for replay elsewhere | ArchiveWeb.page | It exports WARC and WACZ, with ReplayWeb.page for viewing. |
| Keep a searchable, self-hosted collection | ArchiveBox | It runs as a self-hosted application and stores a collection under your control. |
| Automate larger-scale web archiving | Neither personal workflow alone is the whole answer | Webrecorder points users needing automation or scale toward Browsertrix; ArchiveBox offers imports and scheduling for personal collections. |
In short, ArchiveBox is the stronger fit for collection management and routine intake; ArchiveWeb.page is the better fit for hands-on capture of a particular page or interaction. That is a workflow recommendation, not a claim that one captures more faithfully, runs faster, or is easier to use.

How capture, storage, and replay differ
Archiving has three separate stages: recording a page, keeping the resulting files, and replaying them later. ArchiveBox packages multiple kinds of saved material in a self-hosted collection. ArchiveWeb.page records a browsing session and exports WARC or WACZ for later replay. Webrecorder’s specification index describes WACZ as a packaging standard for web archives.
Both approaches can keep data local or under your control, but in different ways: ArchiveBox supports user-controlled local or remote storage, while ArchiveWeb.page says captured data stays local unless shared. These product descriptions are not a security audit. Consider where your archive files live, who can access the machine or storage, and whether the page contains private or sensitive information.

Do not treat a format name as a guarantee of future fidelity. A page’s scripts, login state, browser state, and site behavior can affect what is recorded and what works in replay. The official product pages do not establish a controlled, head-to-head capture-fidelity result for ArchiveBox and ArchiveWeb.page.
Can you use both?
Yes. The tools address complementary workflows: use ArchiveBox for routine URL intake and a maintained collection, then use ArchiveWeb.page when you need to personally navigate a more interactive page and preserve that session. This is a practical workflow inference from their documented capabilities, not a claim that the products have a tested integration.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits—and where it does not
If your immediate need is a visual record rather than a replayable web archive, try ScreenshotNeo first as a screenshot API and MCP server. It returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from a GET request; it is not a replacement for ArchiveBox’s collection management or ArchiveWeb.page’s WARC/WACZ session recording.
