There is no single bitrate that is the official recommendation for both Owncast and YouTube. For the same 1080p60 stream, Owncast suggests 5,000 kbps for the stream it receives, while YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for H.264 ingest. Configure each destination according to its own guidance, and make sure your encoder, upload connection and Owncast server can sustain the settings.
Recommended resolutions and bitrates
Owncast’s figures are suggested broadcast settings for its incoming stream. YouTube’s figures are recommendations for YouTube ingest. They are not interchangeable, and one setting does not automatically satisfy both platforms.

| Destination and resolution | Frame rate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| Owncast, 1920×1080 | 60 fps | 5,000 kbps |
| Owncast, 1920×1080 | 30 fps | 4,500 kbps |
| Owncast, 1280×720 | 60 fps | 4,000 kbps |
| Owncast, 1280×720 | 30 fps | 3,000 kbps |
| YouTube H.264, 1080p | 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| YouTube H.264, 1080p | 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| YouTube H.264, 720p | 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| YouTube H.264, 240p–720p | 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
Owncast says higher resolution requires more bitrate and higher frame rate uses more encoding power. Its suggested settings are not a guarantee for a particular server: match what you send to the Owncast server’s processing and viewer-delivery capacity. YouTube lists separate minimum and maximum ranges for AV1 and H.265; those ranges are not the H.264 recommendations in the table. YouTube generally detects resolution and frame rate automatically. Manual resolution selection is available when using a custom stream key with manual settings enabled. Owncast broadcasting settings · YouTube encoder settings
Choosing a starting point
If upload bandwidth or server processing is constrained, start with 720p30 and test the complete path before increasing resolution or frame rate. If 1080p60 is sustainable, the cited Owncast table suggests 5,000 kbps for Owncast, while YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for H.264 ingest. Use separate destination settings if your encoder or relay supports them. Do not assume one bitrate meets both recommendations.

Configure the Owncast RTMP destination
Owncast accepts RTMP broadcasts on TCP port 1935 by default. Its stream key is used with the /live/ path. Change the default stream key as part of setup.
- Get the Owncast server address and stream key. Use the server address for your installation and the key configured in Owncast’s admin.
- Set the destination URL. If the encoder has separate server and key fields, enter
rtmp://yourserver:1935/liveas the server URL and enter the stream key in its key field. - If the encoder has no separate key field, append the key to the path, for example
rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/your-stream-key. - Set video and audio options. Start with a resolution and frame rate your encoder, connection and Owncast server can sustain; use H.264 video and AAC audio for broad compatibility.
- Start the broadcast and check the result. Confirm the stream reaches Owncast and plays as expected before changing quality settings.
For OBS, Owncast’s documented setup uses the Custom service option, the Owncast RTMP URL and the stream key configured in Owncast’s admin. The default stream key and default admin password may share a value, but they are separate settings; change both. See Owncast’s OBS instructions.

Encoder settings that matter
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Confirm the endpoint and protocol your chosen destination accepts; the default Owncast endpoint described above is RTMP.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Video codec: Owncast recommends H.264 for broad compatibility. YouTube’s settings also list H.265 and AV1, but its bitrate recommendations vary by codec.
- Audio codec: Owncast recommends AAC for broad compatibility. YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- Keyframes: Both sets of guidance call for a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Scan and pixel format: YouTube’s advanced settings specify progressive scan and square pixels.
- Frame rate: YouTube lists rates up to 60 fps. Higher frame rate increases encoding demands, so use it only when the encoder, connection and server can handle it.
In OBS, the keyframe interval is entered in seconds. In ffmpeg, -g is a number of frames: for a two-second interval, use twice the frame rate—for example, -g 60 at 30 fps or -g 120 at 60 fps. See Owncast’s broadcasting guidance and its ffmpeg example.

Send a broadcast to Owncast and YouTube
The documented Owncast workflow sends an encoder’s broadcast to Owncast. The cited Owncast instructions do not describe an automatic feature that forwards that incoming stream to YouTube. To broadcast to both, use encoder or relay software that supports the dual-output workflow you want, and check whether it allows per-destination bitrate settings.

Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
- Configure Owncast as one destination using its RTMP URL and stream key.
- Configure YouTube as the other destination using the ingest details YouTube provides for your stream, with its recommended settings in mind.
- Check the software’s output capabilities, network demand and destination-specific controls before going live.
- Test both destinations. A stream that reaches one successfully does not establish that the other is receiving it at the intended quality.
Check capacity before increasing quality
Encoder and upload connection
The encoder must process the selected resolution, frame rate and codec, and your upload connection must carry the outgoing stream reliably. Leave practical headroom rather than treating a connection’s headline speed as fully available for video. If the stream is unstable, lower resolution or frame rate and test again.
Owncast server and viewers
Owncast warns against sending a source substantially higher in quality than the server’s outputs can handle: extra conversion work uses server resources. Its video-quality guide recommends starting with one output, checking hardware performance, then adding output variants only if the machine can handle them. Transcoding additional resolutions or formats adds work; processing delays can lead to late delivery and buffering.

Server outbound capacity also matters. Owncast describes total outbound demand as the sum of the bitrate delivered to each viewer. CPU use depends on transcoding, and Owncast’s examples vary by codec, bitrate, resolution and encoder preset; there is no universal CPU-per-viewer rule to apply to every installation. Review Owncast’s video-quality guide and server requirements against your actual configuration.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- Owncast rejects the connection: Check that the URL uses the correct server, port and
/livepath, and that the key matches the one in Owncast’s admin. If the encoder has a separate key field, do not accidentally omit it or append it in the wrong place. - The key appears correct but authentication fails: Change the default key and re-enter the updated value. For OBS, remember that the admin password and stream key are separate settings even if their defaults happen to match.
- Owncast works but YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that a second destination is actually configured. The documented Owncast setup does not say that Owncast forwards its incoming broadcast to YouTube.
- Viewers see buffering or delayed output: Reduce the source quality or the number of transcoded output variants, then test server processing and outbound capacity. Transcoding delays can contribute to buffering.
- The stream drops or looks unstable: Reduce bitrate, resolution or frame rate and test the encoder and upload connection again. Ensure each destination’s bitrate is appropriate rather than forcing one setting across both.
- YouTube’s manual resolution choice is unavailable: YouTube says manual selection requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled; otherwise it normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically.
Hardware and hosting considerations
The documented RTMP setup does not require a particular physical product: it uses streaming software and the appropriate server and encoder settings. A capture card is only relevant if you need to feed an external camera or another capture-card source into the encoder. Inputs vary by hardware and platform; Owncast’s ffmpeg documentation discusses device capture but does not make a capture card mandatory or endorse a model.
