Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If ArchiveBox cannot write to its Docker volume, first identify the exact failing path, confirm the mount is writable, and compare the numeric UID/GID ArchiveBox uses with the identity allowed by the host or remote filesystem. Check the resolved Compose configuration and container logs before changing ownership. A container cannot fix a read-only mount or a server-side rule that denies writes.
Find which path is failing before changing permissions
ArchiveBox’s Docker entrypoint uses root during setup, then runs ArchiveBox and Chrome as a non-root user. For a collection, it selects the first non-root numeric owner it finds; for a new or root-owned collection, it falls back to 911:911. The username you see on the host is not enough to establish that permissions match: Linux filesystems check numeric IDs, and a username can map to a different UID or GID inside the container.

The current ArchiveBox troubleshooting documentation describes startup checks and create/delete probes on important output paths. If a check fails, startup makes a shallow repair attempt on exact collection paths. It does not recursively scan or change data/archive, so a large archive should not be subjected to an automatic recursive ownership change.
Diagnose the mount, error, and effective identity
-
Inspect the resolved Compose configuration
Run
docker compose config. Confirm that the intended host path or named volume is mounted at the in-container path ArchiveBox expects. Check for a typo in the source path, an unexpected override, or a read-only mount option.#1 Best Overall

Read the error in context
Run
docker compose logs --tail=200 archivebox. Record the path and operation that failed. Writing the SQLite index, creating an archive snapshot, and using runtime or cache files can involve different paths, so do not assume the collection mount is responsible for every permission error. -
Compare numeric IDs and permissions
Compare the collection’s numeric owner and group on the host with the UID/GID selected in the container and the owner or ACL seen by a NAS or other remote filesystem. Check that the selected identity is actually allowed to write. Configure
PUIDandPGIDwhen the host or remote filesystem requires a particular numeric identity.Rank #2

Check remote storage at its source
Confirm the share or export is writable and its server-side identity mapping and ACL permit the selected UID/GID to write. Check that the mount is not read-only. ArchiveBox’s troubleshooting documentation says: “A read-only mount or NFS export that denies both the selected user and root cannot be repaired from inside the container.” Correct the mount or server policy rather than trying to override it in Docker.

Retry after fixing the cause
Use the documented sequence:
docker compose stop archivebox, docker compose config, docker compose logs --tail=200 archivebox, docker compose run --rm archivebox init, thendocker compose up -d --wait. A restart policy may repeat a failure, but does not cause or repair the underlying permissions problem.Rank #3

Set PUID and PGID to an identity the filesystem permits
Set the Compose environment variables PUID and PGID to the numeric user and group IDs that have write access to the mounted collection. The correct values depend on the host or remote filesystem; 911:911 is ArchiveBox’s fallback for a new or root-owned collection, not a universal value. After changing the variables, check the resolved configuration with docker compose config and retry initialization.
If the collection is on a NAS, the relevant IDs and permissions are those the server/export applies, not merely the IDs displayed by a client. If the server does not allow the selected identity to write, changing container variables alone will not help.

Choose storage placement deliberately
Local bind mount or named volume
For local storage, verify that the intended volume is mounted at the expected in-container path and that the selected numeric identity can write to it. A named volume does not eliminate ownership or read-only-mode problems; inspect the effective mount and permissions just as you would for a bind mount.

Remote or NAS storage
The official Docker image guidance allows only data/archive/ to be remote under the documented layout. Keep index.sqlite3, configuration, logs, temporary/runtime files, and sidecar databases on reliable local storage when using SQLite. PostgreSQL is the documented exception for the main index.

The image documentation gives a host-mounted Rclone/FUSE example using --allow-other, --uid 911, --gid 911, --vfs-cache-mode full, and --vfs-links. Treat those flags and IDs as an example of matching the effective mount owner with ArchiveBox’s PUID/PGID, not as a universal prescription. Docker Desktop runs its daemon in a VM, so a FUSE mount on the host does not automatically behave like one on a Linux Docker host.
When identity remapping may be relevant
Historical ArchiveBox material describes bindfs as an advanced way to remap an identity that cannot be changed, including an example mapping UID 33 to 911. That is an environment-dependent fallback, not the first fix for a current installation. First validate the deployed image’s behavior and the actual mount ownership and ACLs; older image tags may differ from current entrypoint behavior.
Common causes and the matching fix
- Wrong host source or in-container destination: Correct the volume mapping shown by
docker compose config. - Read-only mount: Change the mount mode where it is configured, if the storage is intended to be writable.
- UID/GID mismatch: Set
PUID/PGIDto the numeric identity granted write access, or adjust the filesystem’s ownership or ACL appropriately. - NAS or NFS export denial: Fix the server-side export, mapping, or ACL. The container cannot override a denial affecting both the selected user and root.
- SQLite or runtime state on remote storage: Keep SQLite and application state on reliable local storage; use remote storage only for the documented archive payload location.
- Older pinned image: Check the behavior of the deployed tag rather than assuming it matches current documentation.
