ArchiveBox documents XML and feed imports, but does not promise that every sitemap format or sitemap index will be expanded correctly, so a URL list is the reliable fallback when parser behavior is uncertain.
Prepare the sitemap URL list
- Find the sitemap, often linked from the site’s
robots.txt. If it is a sitemap index, follow its child sitemap files and collect the page URLs from them. - Use a sitemap-aware XML tool to extract each page’s
<loc>value intourls.txt, one URL per line. Preserve the URLs as written, then review the list for duplicates and sections you do not want to archive. - Keep the sitemap extraction separate from ArchiveBox import. The extraction steps are general XML workflow guidance; they are not a claim that ArchiveBox automatically discovers sitemap indexes or expands every sitemap variant.
Import the URLs into ArchiveBox
From the ArchiveBox data directory, import the prepared file through standard input:

archivebox add < urls.txtArchiveBox’s usage guidance describes importing lists and supported input formats through standard input. For an XML or feed input, support is documented, but compatibility with every sitemap structure depends on the parser available in your installed version. Check that version’s help and parser plugins if you want to test direct sitemap ingestion.
Pipe a list directly

Forward standard input with -i and mount the ArchiveBox data directory at /data:

cat urls.txt | docker compose run --rm -T archivebox addThe Docker examples assume the current directory is the data directory mounted into the container. Docker requires -i for piped stdin; the Compose example uses -T.
When to try direct XML or feed import
ArchiveBox guidance mentions RSS, XML, Netscape, and other supported import formats through stdin, and its repository overview illustrates an XML feed parser. That establishes some XML/feed import support, not universal handling of sitemap XML, namespaces, nested indexes, or arbitrarily large files. If you test direct import, use a representative sample and verify that the resulting entries are the page URLs you intended—not just the sitemap file itself.

Do not pass a remote sitemap URL as though it were a single page when your goal is to archive every URL listed inside it. Older usage guidance describes remote import URLs as sources of links, while current guidance recommends the documented input and list mechanisms. When parser behavior is unclear, extract the locations first and submit the plain-text list.

Verify the archive and troubleshoot failures
Submitting URLs starts the import and archiving workflow; it does not guarantee that every target can be captured. Check the resulting archive and its reported failures or omissions.

- The XML appears as one archived page: the file may not have been expanded into its
<loc>entries. Extract the locations into a one-URL-per-line text file, or confirm that a compatible parser is available for your installed version. - A Docker command receives no URLs: ensure the piped input is passed into the container with
-i. For the Compose command, use the documented-Toption. - Some pages are missing or fail: a listed URL may require authentication, block automated retrieval, redirect, or point to a removed page. Inspect the individual archive results rather than treating sitemap inclusion as proof of successful capture.
- The sitemap is very large: the reviewed documentation does not establish a universal batch size, throughput, or timeout. Use a representative sample, monitor the deployment, and tune the process based on observed failures instead of relying on an unsupported fixed limit.
