For most solo players, ARC Raiders is the easier recommendation. It explicitly supports solo runs, lets you play across PlayStation, Xbox and PC, uses a third-person view, and includes crafting and workshop progression. Its PvE matchmaking option is currently a limited beta rather than a permanent mode. Choose Escape from Tarkov instead if you specifically want a first-person tactical extraction FPS built around severe raid risk, PMC and Scav encounters, and the possibility of losing your loot when you fail to extract.
This is a design-based recommendation from the currently documented features, not a hands-on performance or difficulty test. ARC Raiders’ PvE status is especially time-sensitive: Embark’s announced matchmaking-toggle beta runs from October 13 through October 20, 2026, and the studio says the test does not guarantee a permanent PvE mode.

ARC Raiders and Escape from Tarkov answer different solo-player needs
Both games let one person enter an extraction-shooter raid, but they frame that experience differently. ARC Raiders is a multiplayer extraction adventure set on a lethal future Earth. You go Topside alone or with up to two teammates, contend with ARC machines and rival Raiders, collect resources, and develop your character and workshop through crafting, repairs, upgrades, quests and skill paths.

The practical result is that “better” depends on the kind of solo friction you want. ARC Raiders removes some barriers around perspective, platform and social access. Tarkov makes the raid itself the central risk and asks you to accept a harsher, more demanding PC-only setup.

How solo play works in ARC Raiders
Solo entry is an explicit part of the design
ARC Raiders’ official FAQ states that it is an online, multiplayer-only game that can still be played solo, with one Raider going Topside, or in teams of two or three. That distinction matters: “solo” means you enter without a human squad, not that the game is offline. You still need an internet connection and participate in the same shared extraction-adventure framework.
The Steam description also identifies solo or up-to-three-player parties, four launch maps, crafting, repairs, workshop upgrades, quests, dynamic map conditions and other survivors whose choices can be unpredictable. For a lone player, those systems create objectives beyond simply winning a firefight. You can gather materials, repair equipment, improve the workshop and pursue quests while deciding how much danger to accept on each trip.
Cross-platform access lowers the social barrier
The official ARC Raiders site says cross-platform social play works across PlayStation, Xbox and PC. A solo player can therefore begin alone and still group with friends on other supported systems when that is useful. The same feature helps explain why ARC Raiders is the more accessible recommendation for players who do not want to commit to a single PC ecosystem.
Cross-platform support does not turn the game into an offline experience, and it does not remove the possibility of encountering rival Raiders. It simply broadens who can join your party and where you can play.

What the third-person view changes
ARC Raiders uses third-person exploration. That gives you a wider view of your character and surroundings than a first-person-only presentation, which can make navigation and environmental awareness feel more approachable to players who are new to extraction games. It does not prove that every encounter is easy; the game still combines machine threats, rival players and changing map conditions.
ARC Raiders’ PvE option is a beta, not a permanent promise
What the October 2026 test changes
Embark announced a PvE matchmaking-toggle beta running October 13–20, 2026. During the test, players can choose between classic PvPvE matchmaking and PvE matchmaking. The PvE queue has zero player-to-player damage, supports solo, duo and trio groups, lowers overall loot value, and excludes several high-tension conditions.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchZero player-to-player damage means the test is designed to remove direct combat between players, while ARC-machine hazards and the rest of the extraction structure remain relevant. Lower loot value is an important trade-off: a safer queue is not presented as an equal-reward replacement for the classic mode. The announcement also says that some high-tension conditions are excluded, so the test should not be treated as a complete representation of every situation in the standard PvPvE queue.
Why the test may not exist permanently
Embark explicitly says the beta “is not a promise that there will be a PvE mode in the future.” Anyone choosing ARC Raiders mainly for a permanent solo-PvE experience should verify the live matchmaking options after October 20, 2026, rather than assuming the toggle will remain.
The announcement reports that 51% of surveyed players expressed interest in a dedicated PvE option. It also reports a player mix of 37% friendly co-op players, 27% mixed players and 34% pure PvP players. These are developer-reported survey or population figures from Embark’s 2026 announcement, not an independent study, and they indicate interest and reported play styles rather than a guarantee about the final mode.

What this means for a solo purchase decision
- If you want a lower-conflict trial during the test window, the PvE toggle is the relevant option, provided it is available in your region and queue.
- If you are buying for long-term solo PvE, treat the beta as evidence of experimentation, not a product guarantee.
- If you enjoy the uncertainty of player encounters, the classic PvPvE queue remains the mode that matches ARC Raiders’ original multiplayer extraction framing.
How solo play works in Escape from Tarkov
The raid gamble is the core attraction
Steam describes Escape from Tarkov as an extraction FPS in which every raid is a gamble with death. PMC players and Scavs are part of the threat model, and extraction decides whether the loot you collected is kept or lost. That creates a sharper success condition than simply surviving an encounter: you must reach an extraction point and complete the raid outcome that preserves your haul.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a solo player, the structure concentrates responsibility. There is no teammate to revive, share information with or cover an exit in the moment. The same design can be compelling if you want every sound, route and engagement to carry weight, but it is a poor match if you want a forgiving introduction to extraction mechanics.
PvE is listed as a separate expansion
The Steam listing includes online PvP and online co-op and lists a separately purchasable “Escape from Tarkov: PVE Zone” expansion. The listing establishes that a PvE product exists in the Tarkov ecosystem, but the cited page does not spell out every edition, regional availability rule or feature difference. Check the current store listing for the edition and price offered in your region before buying.
That is a different certainty profile from ARC Raiders’ beta. Tarkov’s PVE Zone is presented as a purchasable expansion, while ARC Raiders’ PvE matchmaking toggle is explicitly a time-limited test with no permanence guarantee. The two labels should not be treated as identical products.
Windows requirements and hardware implications
The cited Steam listing gives Windows requirements of 16 GB RAM minimum, 64 GB RAM recommended and 80 GB of storage. Those figures describe the listed system requirements; they do not quantify frame rate, loading times or real-world performance. They do establish a PC-focused entry point with a substantial memory recommendation and a meaningful storage requirement.

ARC Raiders’ cited materials identify PlayStation, Xbox and PC support with cross-platform social play. Tarkov’s cited listing is a Windows PC product. If you play primarily on console or want to avoid a PC upgrade decision, ARC Raiders has the broader documented platform reach.
Which game is easier for a solo beginner?
ARC Raiders is the less intimidating starting point based on its documented design, not on an independent difficulty benchmark. A solo option is stated directly, parties are limited to a manageable one-to-three-player range, the game uses third-person exploration, and progression includes visible activities such as crafting, repairs, workshop upgrades, quests and skill paths. The PvE beta can also remove player-to-player damage during its test window.
Those features reduce several common entry barriers, but they do not eliminate risk. ARC machines, rival Raiders, dynamic map conditions and unpredictable survivor choices can still make a run dangerous. Its lower-loot-value PvE test also changes the reward structure, so a safer queue may not be the fastest way to build resources.
Tarkov is likely to feel harsher to a newcomer because its defining description emphasizes lethal raids, PMC and Scav encounters and loot loss when extraction fails. The first-person tactical format can appeal to players who want maximum immersion and deliberate positioning, but the game asks you to learn that risk model without the broader platform and perspective choices ARC Raiders provides.
Neither listing supplies a controlled tutorial comparison, average survival rate or measured learning curve. The recommendation therefore concerns design friction and documented requirements, not a claim that one game’s enemies or gunfights are objectively easier.

Which game creates more tension?
ARC Raiders: layered threats and changing conditions
ARC Raiders combines environmental machine threats with rival human Raiders. Its Steam description also calls out dynamic map conditions and unpredictable choices by other survivors. A solo run can therefore change according to what the machines are doing, what the map condition demands and whether another player chooses to cooperate, avoid you or compete for the same objective.
The PvE beta changes that tension by removing player-to-player damage and excluding several high-tension conditions. That makes it a useful lower-conflict format, but it is not the same pressure profile as classic PvPvE.
Escape from Tarkov: extraction determines the value of the raid
Tarkov’s tension comes from the possibility that a failed extraction converts a successful loot search into a loss. The Steam description’s PMC-and-Scav framing places hostile encounters directly inside that gamble. For players who enjoy a first-person tactical game where the exit is as important as the fight, Tarkov has the clearer high-stakes identity.
Progression and long-term solo goals
ARC Raiders makes its progression systems explicit
The documented ARC Raiders systems include crafting, repairs, workshop upgrades, quests and skill paths. These give a solo player several kinds of forward motion: acquiring materials, maintaining equipment, improving the workshop, completing assigned objectives and developing capabilities. The four launch maps and changing conditions add variation to where those activities happen.
Because those systems are explicitly named, they are a stronger basis for choosing ARC Raiders if you want your solo sessions to include base and character development alongside extraction.
Tarkov’s cited listing emphasizes the raid loop
The cited Tarkov store page confirms the extraction loop and the PVE Zone listing, but it does not provide a complete progression specification in the material available for this comparison. You should not infer a one-to-one equivalent of ARC Raiders’ workshop, repair or skill-path systems from that listing alone.
Choose ARC Raiders if these statements describe you
- You want to play alone on PlayStation, Xbox or PC and may form cross-platform parties later.
- You prefer third-person exploration and a science-fiction setting.
- You want crafting, repairs, workshop upgrades, quests and skill paths to structure your solo progress.
- You are interested in a lower-conflict PvE test, while accepting that its dates, rewards and future availability are limited or undecided.
- You would rather face a mix of ARC machines and rival Raiders than commit to a Windows-only first-person tactical game.
Choose Escape from Tarkov if these statements describe you
- You specifically want a first-person tactical extraction FPS.
- You enjoy the possibility that a failed extraction means losing the raid’s loot.
- You want PMC and Scav encounters to define the danger of a run.
- You are prepared for a Windows PC setup with 16 GB RAM minimum, 64 GB recommended and 80 GB of listed storage.
- You are considering the listed PVE Zone expansion and are willing to verify its current edition and regional price before purchase.
A practical decision checklist before you buy
- Pick your platform first. If you need console support or cross-platform social play, ARC Raiders has that support documented. The cited Tarkov listing is for Windows PC.
- Pick your perspective. Choose ARC Raiders for third-person exploration; choose Tarkov for a first-person tactical FPS.
- Decide how much player conflict you want. ARC Raiders’ October 13–20, 2026 test offers a PvE matchmaking toggle with zero player-to-player damage, but its permanent future is undecided. Tarkov’s listed PVE Zone is a separate expansion, while the core description centers on PMC and Scav raid risk.
- Check your tolerance for loss. Tarkov’s store description makes extraction the condition for keeping loot. ARC Raiders also uses extraction-adventure structure, but its cited materials emphasize a wider set of progression activities and do not make the same single-sentence loss claim.
- Verify current availability. ARC Raiders’ PvE test dates are specific to October 2026, and Tarkov edition and regional pricing can change. Confirm the live store and matchmaking details at the time you purchase.
Final recommendation
ARC Raiders is the better default for a solo player who wants accessible platform choices, third-person exploration, explicit crafting and workshop progression, and the possibility of lower-conflict matchmaking. Its PvE beta is a meaningful option during the October 13–20, 2026 test, but Embark has not promised that the mode will remain.

Escape from Tarkov is the better specialist choice for someone who actively wants a first-person tactical extraction FPS, accepts a demanding Windows setup and finds the risk of losing loot on a failed extraction appealing rather than frustrating. Its Steam listing provides a PVE Zone expansion, but check the current edition and regional terms before committing.
