ARC Raiders is an extraction adventure: scavenge valuable loot on the surface, then try to extract while avoiding mechanized ARC enemies and other Raiders. The central beginner decision is whether to keep exploring for more or leave with what you have. Exact gear-loss rules, item priorities, and reliable routes are not established by the official information cited here, so check the in-game rules rather than assuming a particular item or loadout is safe.
How the loot-and-extract loop works
The official ARC Raiders site describes Raiders scavenging Topside and extracting valuable loot in a dangerous world. That makes extraction the point at which a successful scavenging run turns into loot brought out of the expedition; the danger comes from both ARC machines and other players. Carrying on may create more opportunity to scavenge, but also leaves you exposed to those threats.

For a first run, focus on learning the loop rather than chasing a particular item: gather what you find, stay aware that the surface is contested, and decide when to stop exploring and attempt extraction. The official materials do not publish a beginner loot-priority list, named building route, extraction timer or guaranteed survival tactic, so there is no verified universal “loot this first” plan to give.

What should you keep, and can you lose your gear?
The official sources cited here do not specify the exact rules for retaining or losing carried gear, what happens to loot after a failed extraction, or which items are protected. Do not assume that a valuable item is automatically secured before extraction, or that a particular kit is exempt from loss. Read the current in-game explanation of your expedition’s risk and gear rules before committing equipment you cannot afford to lose.

Likewise, no item-by-item keep, sell, or scrap priority is established here. Use the item descriptions and available in-game systems to decide what to carry; avoid treating any external list as current unless it accounts for the game’s present rules and update.
Choose a squad size as a matchmaking context
Embark’s July 7, 2026 update says playstyle is tracked separately for Solo, Duo, and Trio rounds. Squad size is therefore a distinct matchmaking context, but that does not establish that any one queue is easiest or safest. Choose based on whether you want to play alone or with others, not on an unsupported promise of a softer lobby.
What changes in October 2026
Frozen Trail and the scheduled free-play period
Embark scheduled Frozen Trail to launch on October 8, 2026. Its announcement offers the full game free on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation from October 8 at 09:00 UTC through October 12 at 08:00 UTC. These are scheduled dates and times, not a recurring offer. The same announcement says a new player can access Pendola Pass during the Frozen Trail period by joining players who have already unlocked that map. Limited PvE toggle test: October 13–20
Embark announced a limited toggle test from October 13 through October 20, 2026. The test offers a choice between classic PvPvE and co-op PvE; it is not an announced permanent PvE mode. Embark says the toggle will be removed after the test. The announced differences are:

Embark says PvPvE matchmaking rating will not be affected by PvE test play. The PvE setting reduces the player-versus-player threat, but its lower loot value and excluded conditions are part of the trade-off. Details are in Embark’s September 24, 2026 PvE-toggle announcement.
Cred expiration
Embark’s September 8, 2026 update says Cred remains usable until October 8 and that any remaining Cred expires with the Frozen Trail update as Cred is retired. Because that deadline has passed, check the current official update information rather than relying on the pre-deadline notice. The notice is in Live Update 1.45.0.

The October free-play announcement specifically names Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation; it does not extend that offer to every platform listed on the site.
