Aquarium Size, Hiding Places and Tank Mates: Which Changes Reduce Fish Aggression Best?

The most reliable way to reduce fish aggression is to fix compatibility and stocking first, then provide enough species-appropriate swimming space and a layout with several safe refuges and broken sight lines. A larger aquarium can help, but there is no tank-size percentage or universal “peaceful fish” list that makes incompatible animals safe. Persistent attacks require separation.

Evidence is species-specific. Midas cichlids showed significantly less aggression in a large aquarium with complex habitat, while a 2024 study of male Siamese fighting fish (bettas) found the best behavioral indicators in the largest furnished treatment. Those findings support combining adequate scale with structure—not simply adding one cave to a crowded tank.

Start with compatibility, not decorations

Before buying a larger aquarium or more ornaments, identify the cause of the conflict. A fish may chase because another fish is an incompatible species, a rival male, a competitor for food, or a subordinate trapped in the aggressor’s territory. Changing the layout cannot remove an inherently unsafe pairing.

Check species and adult size

Use the adult length and body shape of every fish, not the size at the store. A small juvenile that appears harmless may become territorial or large enough to injure tank mates. Compare the adult size of each species with the usable swimming footprint, not just the aquarium’s advertised volume. Tall tanks can contain the same litres or gallons as long tanks while offering less horizontal escape distance.

Also account for turning space. A fish that can technically fit in a tank may still be unable to accelerate, turn or retreat around solid decor. Measure the clear length and width after accounting for rocks, wood, filters and heaters. The relevant question is whether each adult can move normally while another fish is defending a territory.

Check sex ratio and social structure

Sex matters in territorial and displaying species. CDC consumer guidance specifically warns that male bettas cannot be housed together because they fight. Do not assume that adding females, a second pair, or a larger group will dilute aggression; the correct social structure is species-specific and must be verified before stocking.

Some species need a compatible group, some need a pair, and some are safest alone. An incomplete group can make one individual the constant target, while two territorial males can turn the whole aquarium into a contested boundary. Confirm the sex and social requirements before purchase rather than trying to correct a bad combination with extra fish.

Check stocking density and resource competition

Count all fish, account for adult size, and consider competition around food, shelter and preferred territory. A tank may have adequate gross volume but too little open floor, too few feeding areas or no route for a subordinate fish to retreat. The UK animal-care code links stocking density to environmental conditions, health and welfare and requires sufficient water volume for normal swimming.

The same standards say aggression should be minimized without compromising welfare and that species-specific needs must guide the setup. More fish are not a treatment for aggression: they can increase competition, waste production and the number of animals exposed to a bully.

What tank size actually changes

More water volume can increase distance between territories, provide a longer escape route and dilute waste between maintenance sessions. It does not automatically stop fighting. The useful question is whether the new aquarium adds both a larger usable footprint and a layout that prevents one fish from controlling every resource.

Footprint versus advertised volume

Two aquariums with the same capacity can offer very different behavior opportunities. A longer tank gives a chased fish more horizontal distance and makes it easier to place separate refuges. A tall, narrow tank may provide water volume but little room to leave an aggressor’s territory. Solid decor and equipment further reduce usable space, so plan around the swimming area that remains after the tank is furnished.

Water volume also determines how much maintenance capacity is needed. A larger system still needs a suitable filter, pump and routine testing. After adding fish or dense decor, check that waste does not accumulate in blocked areas and that current is not so strong that weaker fish cannot rest.

Findings from Midas cichlids

Oldfield and colleagues (2012) found that small-scale differences in group size or available space were not associated with time spent aggressive. Aggression was significantly lower in a large aquarium with a complex habitat. The result argues against moving fish into a slightly larger but still bare box. Scale and structure need to change together.

Findings from male bettas

Clark-Shen, Tariel-Adam, Gajanur and Brown (2024) rotated 13 male Siamese fighting fish through five conditions: a 1.5 L jar, 3.3 L small tank, 5.6 L medium tank, and two 19.3 L tanks—one furnished and one barren. Fish in the large tank were more active and spent less time resting, hovering abnormally or performing stereotypic swimming. The 19.3 L furnished treatment produced better behavioral indicators than the 19.3 L barren treatment.

That study recommended at least 5.6 L for display and larger tanks for home keeping, with gravel, live plants and refuges. A separate 2024 betta study reported that at least 10 L was required for full swimming expression. These are outcome-specific findings for bettas, not a universal minimum for every species or a guarantee that any community aquarium will be peaceful.

Use the evidence without false precision

No study establishes that adding a fixed number of litres, gallons or caves reduces aggression by a set percentage in all aquariums. Treat every numerical recommendation as conditional on species, adult size, group composition, filtration and layout. If fish still sustain injuries or one individual cannot feed, the aquarium is not safe regardless of its volume.

Design refuges that actually work

Most aquatic animals prefer refugia when avoiding a tank mate or a perceived predator. NCBI aquatic-systems guidance lists smooth caves, dense plants, wood and other aquarium-safe structures as practical refuges. The goal is not decoration; it is to give a chased fish a route out of the aggressor’s sight line.

Use several refuges, not one central cave

  • Distribute hides across the length and depth of the aquarium so one fish cannot guard every entrance.
  • Provide more than one route between open water and cover.
  • Combine low structures, plant thickets and vertical cover to create separated territories.
  • Leave clear swimming lanes and enough entrance space for the largest fish.
  • Place cover near more than one feeding area so a subordinate does not have to cross an exposed territory for every meal.

A single ornament in the middle often becomes a contested resource. Multiple refuges allow subordinate fish to choose cover and reduce direct visual contact. Repositioning existing wood and plants can sometimes improve sight lines before buying anything else.

Break lines of sight

Arrange plants, wood and caves so a fish at one end cannot see the entire aquarium. Visual barriers are especially useful in long tanks, where a chased fish can otherwise remain in view continuously. Rework the layout when introducing a new fish so established territories are less predictable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not fill every part of the tank with objects. Fish still need open water for normal swimming, and some species require unobstructed space. A good layout alternates cover with clear lanes rather than creating a solid maze.

Make every refuge safe

  • Choose smooth surfaces without sharp edges or narrow slots that can trap fins or bodies.
  • Anchor rocks and wood so they cannot collapse during digging or sudden movement.
  • Check that caves have an entrance and exit sized for the fish using them.
  • Avoid unstable piles, exposed fasteners and materials not intended for aquarium use.
  • Keep intakes, heaters and strong pump outlets protected from curious or fleeing fish.

The UK code states: “Fish shall be provided with an appropriate environmental enrichment, such as hiding places or bottom substrate, unless behavioural traits suggest none is required.” Enrichment must still match the species; some fish need open water, while others depend on cover.

Evaluate tank mates by behavior and resources

There is no generic list of peaceful fish that can be applied to every aquarium. Compatibility depends on adult size, temperament, social system, sex, swimming zone and competition for food or shelter. Use the following checks before combining species.

Compatibility check Questions to answer Warning signs
Adult-size fit Will the largest fish be able to swallow, injure or outcompete the smallest at adult size? Large size gap, predatory shape or juveniles being sold as “temporary” companions.
Temperament Does each species defend a territory, chase moving fish or display aggressively? Repeated charging, fin damage, cornering or one fish guarding a whole section.
Social needs Does the species require a group, a pair, a solitary setup or a particular sex ratio? Two territorial males, an incomplete group, or a lone fish that cannot escape attention.
Space and swimming zone Do the fish need the same bottom, middle or surface area, and is there enough uninterrupted footprint? Constant overlap at one level or a subordinate unable to leave a territory.
Resource use Can all fish reach food and shelter without competing at one point? One fish eats every meal, blocks a cave or drives others from a feeding area.
Water and equipment Do all species tolerate the same water conditions and flow, and can filtration handle the final bioload? Chronic stress, poor water quality or a pump flow that prevents weaker swimmers from resting.

CDC guidance recommends researching which species can share a tank, matching tank size to the available space, preparing the aquarium before acquiring fish, and planning for equipment such as filters and pumps. Follow that sequence rather than buying a “peaceful” fish first and trying to make the environment fit later.

A step-by-step aggression-reduction plan

  1. Document the incidents. Note which fish initiates chasing, where it happens, how long it lasts, and whether there are torn fins, missing scales or refusal to eat. A short video can reveal whether the behavior is territorial defense, feeding competition or continuous harassment.
  2. Verify identities and adult sizes. Confirm the species and sex of every fish, then look up adult dimensions and social requirements from a reliable husbandry source. Do not rely on juvenile appearance or a store label such as “community.”
  3. Remove an unsafe pairing immediately. If a fish is injured, pinned in a corner or prevented from feeding, move the victim or aggressor to a secure, cycled enclosure. Separation is a welfare intervention, not a failure of aquascaping.
  4. Measure usable space. Record tank length, width and water depth, then subtract areas blocked by equipment and solid decor. Check whether the largest fish can turn, accelerate and retreat without collision.
  5. Rebuild the layout. Add several smooth refuges, dense plants or wood, and visual barriers distributed across the tank. Keep an open lane for normal swimming and ensure every hide has a safe entrance and exit.
  6. Recheck filtration and maintenance. Confirm that the filter and pump can process the final bioload without creating exhausting flow. After adding livestock or decor, test water quality more often and remove debris from blocked areas.
  7. Reintroduce only when conditions are stable. If the species is genuinely compatible, rearrange territories before returning fish and release them when you can observe the tank. Feed in more than one location when competition is part of the problem.
  8. Monitor over days, not minutes. Look for normal exploration, feeding and resting. Escalating chases, repeated hiding without feeding, clamped fins, wounds or a fish losing body condition mean the combination remains unsafe.

How to tell whether the new setup is helping

Activity alone is not proof of welfare: frantic circling can be abnormal stereotypic swimming. Better signs include normal exploration, purposeful swimming, regular feeding, undamaged fins and the ability of each fish to rest out of another’s view. The betta study distinguished increased activity in the large furnished tank from abnormal hovering and stereotypic swimming, which declined in that condition.

Signs of improvement

  • Chasing is brief and stops when the pursued fish reaches cover.
  • Fish use different areas instead of one animal controlling the whole aquarium.
  • All individuals come out to feed and maintain body condition.
  • Fins, scales and skin remain intact over repeated observations.

Signs the intervention failed

  • One fish is repeatedly pinned, bitten or denied access to food.
  • The same individual hides continuously, breathes heavily or loses condition.
  • Adding decor increases territorial guarding around a single refuge.
  • Water quality deteriorates after stocking or the pump creates exhausting current.

When separation or rehoming is the humane answer

Separate fish when attacks are persistent, injuries recur, or a subordinate cannot eat and rest normally. Use a properly heated, filtered and cycled enclosure appropriate to the species; a temporary container without stable water quality is not a long-term solution. If you cannot provide two suitable systems, rehome one fish through a responsible aquatic club, specialist retailer or keeper who can meet its needs.

Do not keep testing an incompatible combination because the aquarium is large or heavily decorated. The evidence supports habitat complexity as a way to improve choice and reduce encounters, not as a method for overriding species-level aggression. A safe outcome is one in which every fish can swim, feed and shelter without sustained harassment.

Practical decision guide

What you observe Most likely next action
Brief displays with no injuries; all fish feed and rest Keep monitoring, maintain water quality and preserve multiple escape routes.
Chasing focused around one cave or plant clump Redistribute refuges, break the sight line and create separate feeding points.
Repeated attacks after a layout change Recheck species, sex, adult size and social requirements; do not add more fish as a distraction.
Injuries, starvation or continuous hiding Separate immediately and provide a suitable independent setup.
Tank is larger but still barren or crowded Increase usable footprint and habitat complexity together, then reassess stocking density.

Key takeaways for planning a peaceful aquarium

  • Compatibility, adult size, sex ratio and stocking density come before tank upgrades.
  • A larger aquarium helps most when it adds usable swimming distance and multiple territories.
  • Complex habitat with distributed refuges and broken sight lines is more useful than one ornament.
  • Betta figures of 5.6 L, 10 L and 19.3 L come from specific studies and outcomes; they are not universal community-tank rules.
  • Water quality, filtration and maintenance capacity must remain adequate after every stocking or decor change.
  • When attacks persist, separation or rehoming is the humane solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a bigger aquarium stop fish from fighting?

Not by itself. More usable swimming distance can separate territories and provide escape routes, but incompatible species, rival males or excessive stocking can remain aggressive. Increase footprint and habitat complexity together, then separate fish that continue to injure or starve one another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do more hiding places reduce aggression?

Several safe refuges and broken sight lines can reduce encounters and give subordinate fish somewhere to retreat. One central cave may become a defended resource. Use smooth, stable structures distributed across the tank while retaining open swimming lanes.

Which fish can live together without bullying?

There is no universal peaceful-fish list. Check adult size, temperament, social structure, sex ratio, swimming zone, resource competition and water requirements for the exact species. CDC guidance specifically warns that male bettas cannot share an aquarium because they fight.

How many litres does a betta need?

The 2024 study of 13 male bettas recommended at least 5.6 L for display and larger tanks at home; a separate study reported at least 10 L for full swimming expression. These findings are betta-specific and do not establish a universal rule for community tanks.

Is a large bare tank better than a smaller furnished tank?

The betta trial found better behavioral indicators in the 19.3 L furnished treatment than in the same-volume barren treatment. The Midas cichlid findings likewise linked lower aggression with a large aquarium and complex habitat. Size and structure should be assessed together.

When should I separate fish?

Separate immediately when attacks cause wounds, a fish is pinned or repeatedly chased, or an individual cannot eat, rest or maintain body condition. Use a suitable heated, filtered and cycled enclosure; do not keep testing an unsafe pairing because the main tank is large.

The Bottom Line

Fix compatibility, adult-size fit, sex ratio and stocking density first. Then provide a genuinely usable footprint, several safe refuges and broken sight lines, while keeping filtration and water quality under control. Larger, complex habitats can improve behavior, but persistent attacks mean the fish need separate homes.
