Its breadth is a strength, but costs and lifecycle dates vary by offering, so buyers should choose the specific service before budgeting.

Personal desktops and billing

WorkSpaces Personal keeps a user's desktop, installed applications, files and settings available across sign-ins. That continuity suits people who need a stable work environment; the trade-off is that the chosen bundle and billing model determine the cost. AlwaysOn uses a monthly subscription, while AutoStop combines a monthly base fee with hourly metering, which better matches intermittent use but makes the bill usage-dependent.

Personal desktops include persistent SSD-based user storage sized by bundle and automatic backups. Amazon S3 or Amazon FSx can also retain selected files and settings between sessions. Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise can be brought under customers' own licenses, or customers can buy Microsoft Office bundles from AWS.

Application delivery and browser access

WorkSpaces applications lets organizations build application images and stream sessions on general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized and GPU instance families. This makes it a fit when users need selected applications rather than a full personal desktop, though instance-hour charges sit alongside the user fee.

WorkSpaces secure browser streams encrypted pixels from a browser session running in AWS. Controls for file transfers, printing, copy and paste, domain allowlists and blocklists make it relevant where browser activity needs tighter boundaries than an ordinary browser session.

Identity, management and security

WorkSpaces DaaS supports AD and non-AD domain-joined desktops, AWS IAM Identity Center brokering with providers such as Entra ID, and Intune endpoint management. It also integrates with VDI management software from Citrix, Dizzion, Leostream, Omnissa and Workspot, a useful fit for organizations already using those tools.

Connections require TLS 1.2; AWS recommends TLS 1.3 and uses cipher suites supporting perfect forward secrecy. AWS states a financially backed service-level agreement based on monthly uptime percentage and lists 99.9%.

Pricing

The headline starting price is $25/mo, but WorkSpaces has distinct fees by service, region, bundle and usage. The Free Tier runs for up to three months: either two Standard AutoStop desktops with 40 combined monthly hours, or five Performance AutoStop Ubuntu desktops with 100 combined monthly hours. Those caps make it useful for a limited evaluation, not an uncapped free deployment.

• WorkSpaces applications — Windows single-session user fee: $4.19 a month, billed $4.19 per user per month, plus provisioned instance-hour charges. Windows Server streaming sessions are charged at a price that varies by instance type, size and operating system. This suits per-user application delivery when the extra compute charge is accounted for.
• WorkSpaces secure browser — standard.regular (US East/Northern Virginia): $7 a month, billed $7 per monthly active user, including up to 200 streaming hours per monthly active user. Each additional streaming hour costs $0.035, and regional pricing varies. This is the clearest fit for bounded browser use; heavier use adds metered cost.
• WorkSpaces Personal AutoStop — Ubuntu Linux Power example (US West/Oregon): $7.25 a month, billed $7.25 per month + $0.66 per hour, with an 80 GB root volume and 10 GB user volume. It suits variable use, but frequent sessions can make hourly charges consequential.
• WorkSpaces Personal AlwaysOn — Windows Standard example (US West/Oregon): $44 a month, billed $44 per machine per month, with a 175 GB root volume and 100 GB user volume. It suits users needing an always-available Windows desktop and predictable machine billing.

GPU options and dedicated resources are supported, but the example prices above do not establish their costs. WorkSpaces also offers custom pricing where a published example does not fit the required configuration.

Clients are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iPad, Android, Chromebook and supported web browsers. That breadth helps teams with mixed endpoint devices, though PCoIP-based WorkSpaces Personal support ends on October 31, 2027, a date customers using that protocol should factor into migration planning.

Who it's for

WorkSpaces is best suited to organizations that want managed cloud desktops or application streaming, especially when persistent user storage, identity integration, endpoint management or GPU-capable instance families matter. It is less compelling for buyers seeking a single simple per-seat price: AutoStop, streaming and regional charges can vary with usage and configuration.
