It fits alongside an existing test suite rather than replacing functional tests. Its appeal is the managed baseline-review workflow and support for several automation frameworks; buyers should validate their exact integrations, deployment requirements, plan limits, and cost before committing.
What Applitools Eyes does
A functional test can confirm that a button works or a page displays expected text. Eyes adds a visual check: the test exercises the application, captures a screen at a checkpoint, and compares it with a saved reference image. Applitools describes visual testing as regression testing that checks whether previously correct screens have changed unexpectedly.

On the first run, captured images establish baselines. Later runs compare new captures with those baselines and report differences for review. A reviewer can accept an intentional UI change as the new baseline or reject it and keep the previous reference. That review and baseline governance are central parts of the product, not an automatic substitute for deciding whether a change is correct.
How Eyes fits into an automation stack
The documented flow includes the application under test, a test suite, an Eyes SDK, an application driver such as Selenium or Appium, Eyes Server, and Eyes Test Manager. The SDK adds visual checkpoints to the test and sends captures to the server for comparison; the team reviews results and manages baseline updates in Test Manager. Applitools documents public-cloud, dedicated-cloud, and on-premises configurations. Confirm which deployment choices and controls are available for the proposed plan and environment.

Eyes is most naturally evaluated by a team that already runs automated UI flows and wants visual assertions alongside functional ones. It may be especially relevant when reviewing many baselines or covering multiple browsers and devices, but the specific coverage depends on the framework, product area, and plan.
Capabilities and product scope to verify
Applitools’ official materials list integrations with Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, and Appium, and describe use cases spanning web and mobile apps, Storybook components, Figma/design comparison, and PDFs or documents. The product documentation also names Eyes, Autonomous, Ultrafast Grid, Execution Cloud, and TestGenAI as distinct product areas. These are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every combination is included in every plan.

- Framework and language: Verify that the SDK supports the team’s actual framework, language, and version, and check current setup guidance. The Appium Python quickstart illustrates the general pattern—install an SDK, configure an account API key, add visual checkpoints, and inspect a report when a capture differs—but its package and implementation details should be checked against the live documentation.
- Coverage: Ask which browsers, devices, mobile workflows, component contexts, and document types are included in the proposed setup.
- Visual noise: Applitools says its Visual AI helps distinguish meaningful changes from rendering noise. No independent comparative benchmark is established here, so assess how it behaves against your own pages and acceptable variation.
- Product boundaries: Ask which named product areas are necessary for the intended workflow and whether they are included or separately scoped.
What to evaluate before adopting it
Run a representative proof of concept
Choose a small set of real user flows with both stable pages and pages that change intentionally. Check how checkpoints are inserted into the current test suite, how differences are presented, who can approve or reject a baseline, and how accepted changes are recorded. Include the browsers, devices, and content patterns that matter to your application rather than relying only on a demo.

- Vanishing design: Only people with good color vision can see the sign. If you are colorblind you won’t see anything.
- Transformation design: Color blind people will see a different sign than people with no color vision handicap.
- Hidden digit design: Only colorblind people are able to spot the sign. If you have perfect color vision, you won’t be able to see it.
- Classification design: This is used to differentiate between red- and green-blind persons. The vanishing design is used on either side of the plate, one side for deutan defects an the other for protans.
Model usage and total cost
Estimate the number of pages or components you expect to checkpoint, how often tests run, and how many environments you need. Ask how the plan defines a page and a component checkpoint, how usage is counted across reruns or environments, what happens at the limit, and which product features are included. Do not assume a headline allowance translates directly to an equivalent number of complete test runs.
Applitools pricing: verify the live offer
When the official pricing page was captured in 2026, Applitools listed Starter at $667 per month when paid annually, with 100,000 component checkpoints or 1,000 page checkpoints. It described Professional as customizable, starting at 150 active pages or 1,500 components. These are vendor-published plan figures, not independent outcome measures, and pricing and definitions can change. Confirm the live price, billing commitment, usage rules, overages, and feature entitlements before purchase. The product page indicates trial or demo exploration, but availability and terms may also change.

How to compare Eyes with alternatives
Applitools’ comparison materials are product positioning, not neutral evidence that it outperforms another service. Chromatic’s official FAQ positions Chromatic around UI components and component libraries, while Applitools’ materials emphasize broader test-framework and environment coverage. The available evidence does not establish an independent performance ranking.

ScreenshotNeo as an alternative to try first
If the immediate need is to capture website screenshots through an API rather than add visual checkpoints and baseline review to an existing test suite, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a like-for-like replacement for Eyes’ visual-regression workflow. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; before capture it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets, with each step optional. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. It also offers MCP tools for AI agents and has a free tier of 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
For API parameters and options, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Example cURL request:

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Applitools Eyes replace functional testing?
No. It adds visual comparisons to automated UI tests; teams still need functional assertions and human judgment on whether visual changes are intended.
Is Applitools’ visual accuracy independently benchmarked here?
No independent comparative benchmark is established. Evaluate its behavior with representative pages and rendering variation from your own application.
