Percy Build Stuck in Pending or Receiving: Causes and Fixes

A Percy build that stays in receiving may be waiting on parallel shards or an explicit finalizer. Use the status and CI error details to find the right fix.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a Percy build stays in receiving after its tests finish, first check whether it is a parallel run that has not been finalized or is still waiting for an expected shard. A dashboard label of pending can describe the same symptom, but it does not point to one universal cause. Check the build’s exact status and error details, then follow the matching fix below.

Start with the build status and CI run

  1. Open the Percy build and note its exact status and any error banner. Percy’s documentation describes a build hanging in receiving when finalization is incomplete; do not assume that every build labelled pending has this cause. Percy’s parallel test suites guide explains the receiving/finalization case.
  2. Check whether the associated CI workflow and all test shards have actually terminated. A shard that is still running, failed, or was cancelled may explain why the combined build has not completed.
  3. If the build reports no snapshots, a failed snapshot command, an upload failure, a rendering timeout, or a CI configuration error, use that classification and the job logs to choose the relevant section below. Percy lists these as distinct failure types: failure types.

If the build uses parallel test shards

Percy groups parallel test work using a shared PERCY_PARALLEL_NONCE. The completion rule depends on how the shard count is configured. Check the value and finalization behavior before changing network or rendering settings.

Configuration How completion works What to check or do
Fixed PERCY_PARALLEL_TOTAL Percy waits for the configured number of builds to be finalized. Make sure the total matches the shards that actually ran and finalized. If the total is four but only three shard builds completed, Percy can continue waiting for the fourth.
--parallel or PERCY_PARALLEL_TOTAL=-1 The shard count is not fixed; the run needs an explicit finalize-all operation. After all test jobs finish, run npx percy build:finalize in a downstream job that depends on every shard.

Use the same nonce for every shard and the finalizer belonging to one CI run. Give each distinct CI run a unique nonce. Reusing a nonce on a rerun can conflict with a build that already finalized. See the parallel suites guide and the build-not-finalized guidance.

Finalize an unknown number of shards

  1. Set up parallel mode with PERCY_PARALLEL_TOTAL=-1 (or the equivalent --parallel configuration used by your Percy integration).
  2. Set one PERCY_PARALLEL_NONCE for the current CI run and make it available to all shard jobs.
  3. Add a downstream finalization step or job that runs only after all test shards have completed:
npx percy build:finalize
  1. Pass the same nonce to that finalizer. Check that CI failure and cancellation handling does not silently skip the final step when the run’s shards have completed.

The CLI reference documents build:finalize and build:wait: Percy CLI commands. If Percy does not automatically detect your CI provider, configure the parallel variables explicitly for each relevant job. Percy runs also require PERCY_TOKEN; see CI/CD environment configuration.

If Percy reports no snapshots

Zero uploaded snapshots is a different problem from an unfinished parallel build. Confirm that the test command reached the Percy SDK or CLI snapshot call, that tests did not fail before that call, and that PERCY_TOKEN is available in the CI worker’s environment. A missing token or an SDK command that never ran can leave Percy with no snapshots to process. Percy’s failure-type reference distinguishes missing snapshots from other build failures.

Match other errors to their likely fix

  • Build not finalized: Verify that the finalizer runs after all parallel shards and receives the shared nonce. The finalization error guide covers this case.
  • Snapshot command not called: Check that the Percy SDK is wired into the test runner and that the relevant test actually ran.
  • Upload snapshot failure: Inspect CI network egress and the upload error in the job logs; retry where appropriate.
  • Rendering timeout or network-idle failure: Check whether the page and its required resources are reachable from Percy, then consult the documented rendering and network-idle settings.
  • CI pipeline error: Inspect the failing job’s environment for the correct PERCY_TOKEN and, if parallel, the required parallel variables.

Use Percy’s reported classification and the CI logs to select a branch. A longer rendering timeout will not fix a missing shard or finalizer; changing the shard total will not fix a snapshot call that never ran. The failure categories are described in Percy’s failure-type reference.

What percy build:wait does—and does not do

percy build:wait waits for a build to finish and can gate later CI steps. The Percy CLI command reference lists a default timeout of ten minutes. Waiting does not finalize an unfinished parallel build: first correct the shard accounting or run the required finalization step. See the command reference.
