Application lifecycle management (ALM) is the coordinated work of planning, building, releasing, operating, maintaining, changing, and eventually retiring a software application. It is broader than the software development lifecycle (SDLC): SDLC focuses on how software is built, while ALM also covers the people, processes, governance, and operational work surrounding the application.
What application lifecycle management includes
ALM connects the decisions and work that shape an application throughout its useful life. Depending on the organization, this can include:

- Planning, project management, and governance
- Requirements management and architecture
- Development, source control, and collaboration
- Builds, testing, and defect management
- Release management, deployment, and change control
- Operation, monitoring, maintenance, and user support
- Learning from feedback and deciding when to revise or retire the application
These are common disciplines, not a mandatory checklist or a universal stage model. Microsoft’s ALM overview and its Dynamics 365 implementation guidance describe overlapping responsibilities while reflecting their respective implementation contexts.

SDLC, or software development lifecycle, describes the methods and activities used to build software. ALM takes a wider view: it includes development but also the planning and governance around it, deployment, ongoing operations, maintenance, support, changes, and end of life. IBM summarizes the distinction in its explanation of application lifecycle management: SDLC is about building software, while ALM manages the application more broadly from conception through continued use and retirement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The terms are not used identically by every organization or vendor. In practice, the useful distinction is scope: a process called SDLC may be embedded within a larger ALM practice, but a build-and-test process alone does not cover the full application lifecycle.
Is the application lifecycle a linear sequence?
Not necessarily. Teams may describe lifecycle stages in sequence for planning, but application work usually repeats: monitoring and user feedback can lead to new requirements, development, testing, and deployment. Microsoft Learn presents its Power Platform lifecycle as a cycle of planning and tracking, development, building and testing, deployment, operation, monitoring, and learning. That cycle is an example of how ALM can work, not a rule that every team must adopt the same stages or platform-specific setup.

What ALM tools do—and do not do
ALM tools can help teams coordinate work and preserve links between lifecycle activities. Depending on the tools and configuration, that can mean connecting requirements, work items, code changes, tests, defects, releases, and operational feedback; managing source control; and automating builds, tests, or deployments. Microsoft Learn describes ALM tools as providing a standardized system for communication and collaboration among development teams and related groups such as testing and operations.

A tool is only part of ALM. People still need to define responsibilities, decide how changes are reviewed and approved, manage risks, and use operational information to guide future work. IBM’s technical reference, Application Lifecycle Management with Rational Products, likewise treats ALM as coordination among people, processes, and tools.

How to assess an ALM approach
When reviewing a team’s ALM practice or evaluating tools, look for coverage and fit rather than a universal “best” product:
- Lifecycle coverage: Does it support the work the team needs from planning and requirements through release, operations, maintenance, and retirement?
- Traceability: Can the team follow relationships among requirements, work items, code changes, tests, defects, releases, and operational feedback?
- Integration and automation: Does it connect with the team’s source control, build and test processes, deployment pipelines, and existing systems?
- Governance: Can the team manage access, reviews, audit trails, change tracking, deployment controls, and applicable security or compliance requirements?
- Workflow fit: Does the approach suit the team’s delivery model, platform, scale, and skills?
ALM is the management of an application as an ongoing product, not merely the process of getting its first version built. Its particular stages and tools depend on the organization, but the defining idea is to coordinate the application’s technical work with the planning, governance, delivery, and operational work that continues around it.
