MacRumors reported the change on August 25, 2026; it is a keycap-label update, not evidence of new typing technology or a mechanical redesign.
Which keys have changed?
MacRumors reports that the refresh applies to several US English Magic Keyboard configurations. On compact models, six keys switch from edge text to glyphs:

- Tab
- Caps Lock
- Shift
- Return
- Delete
On full-size models with numeric keypads, the report lists six additional changes: Home, Page Up, Page Down, End, Clear and Enter. The reported difference is how these keys are labeled, rather than what they do.
MacRumors’ August 25, 2026 report describes the update as matching a labeling change already made on recent MacBook keyboards. Apple’s support specifications do not announce this refresh, so the model scope and specific legends should be understood as reported, not as an Apple-published changelog.
#1 Best Overall
- Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It’s also wireless and rechargeable, with an incredibly long-lasting internal battery that’ll power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
- It pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- It features a USB-C port and includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
Which Magic Keyboard models are included?
According to MacRumors, refreshed products include the standard compact Magic Keyboard and compact Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, as well as white-key and black-key versions of the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad. The report says the US English Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad that lacks Touch ID was not refreshed and retains text labels on the corresponding keys.
That distinction matters if you are comparing full-size keyboards: the presence of a numeric keypad alone does not establish that a unit has the new legends. The report ties the refresh to particular configurations, including Touch ID models, rather than all Magic Keyboards with a keypad.

- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING — The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a Lightning to USB Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB port on your Mac.
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS — Requires a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with macOS 10.12.4 or later, an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later, or an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.
Did Apple change anything besides the labels?
The available information establishes a visual keycap change, not a change to the keyboard’s typing mechanism or performance. Apple’s support page describes the general features of the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID for Apple silicon Macs: it is a USB-C model introduced in 2024, supports Touch ID for logins and purchases, operates wirelessly with a rechargeable battery, pairs automatically, and can be charged or paired over USB-C. Those are baseline product specifications, not evidence of new internals in the 2026 refresh.
Apple’s Magic Keyboard with Touch ID technical specifications do not provide a 2026 refresh changelog. The distinction is useful: the reported glyphs may make the key legends look more consistent with recent MacBook keyboards, but they do not establish a functional upgrade.

How to check which version you are buying
Apple’s US store lists a USB-C Magic Keyboard in US English, but that product listing does not confirm whether a particular retailer unit has refreshed keycaps. Before ordering, compare the actual listing photos with the keys you expect and verify the configuration:
- Check the language and layout. The reported legend change concerns US English models; do not assume it applies to other language layouts.
- Confirm compact or numeric-keypad size. Full-size models have additional reported changes for navigation and keypad-related keys.
- Check for Touch ID. The report distinguishes refreshed Touch ID configurations from the US English numeric-keypad model without Touch ID.
- Look at the key color and photos. MacRumors names white-key and black-key Touch ID numeric-keypad versions. Inspect the pictured keys rather than relying on a generic product name.
Apple’s US English USB-C Magic Keyboard listing confirms the product name and layout, but neither it nor Apple’s support specifications verify the revision of third-party stock. Product photos and configuration details are the most practical checks when a listing does not explicitly identify the updated legends.
