Yes. In an October 1, 2026 announcement, YouTube said it is updating Shorts recommendations to give more priority to original content and reduce distribution for re-uploads that add nothing meaningful. Channels mainly aggregating or re-uploading other creators’ clips without significant changes will likely receive less reach in the Shorts feed. YouTube did not promise more views for every original creator or quantify the change.
What YouTube changed in Shorts recommendations
TeamYouTube described the update as a change to Shorts recommendation systems—not a blanket ban on clips, remixes, or other formats. The stated aim is to improve the viewing experience by prioritizing original work and reducing reach for content re-uploaded from other creators without meaningful additions. YouTube’s announcement says channels primarily aggregating or re-uploading without significant changes will “likely” see less distribution in the Shorts feed.

That qualification matters: YouTube gives no estimated reach reduction, rollout percentage, or guaranteed uplift for original Shorts. The announcement also does not publish an exhaustive test for deciding whether every individual video is original enough.
What counts as a meaningful contribution?
YouTube’s guidance focuses on what the uploader adds for viewers. When using another creator’s clip, it recommends original commentary, distinctive editing, storytelling, or a clear point of view. It cautions that minor technical edits or template-based changes made simply to alter a video are not the kind of contribution it is asking for.

Originality is not the only factor in Shorts reach
The change adds emphasis to the recommendation system; it does not replace the other factors YouTube describes. Its Shorts discovery guidance says ranking reflects performance and viewer personalization, not a preferred Shorts format.
When deciding whether to recommend a Short, YouTube says it considers whether viewers choose to watch, ignore it, or mark it “not interested”; whether they stay; average view duration; average percentage viewed; likes; and post-watch survey responses. Topic interest, competition from other Shorts, and seasonality can also affect how many people see a video. Original work can therefore have uneven results as audiences and viewing conditions change.

YouTube also says there is no minimum posting cadence required for Shorts to perform well. Its advice is to learn what works for an audience and focus on making videos viewers enjoy. Shorts performance does not negatively affect recommendations for long-form videos.
Recommendation reach is separate from monetization and copyright
The Shorts recommendation update should not be confused with YouTube’s reused-content monetization policy. That policy applies at the channel level and covers content already on YouTube or elsewhere that is repurposed without significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value. YouTube says it is separate from copyright enforcement and can apply even when a creator has permission to use the material. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

YouTube lists critical reviews, reaction videos with commentary, footage edited into a new storyline with commentary, and substantive edits that demonstrate a channel’s unique contribution as examples that may be allowed under the reused-content policy. Those examples do not guarantee recommendation reach, copyright clearance, or monetization approval in a particular case.
Separately, YouTube’s July 15, 2025 notice renamed its repetitious-content policy “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material is ineligible for monetization under existing rules. The notice said the reused-content policy did not change. That monetization-policy update is distinct from the October 2026 Shorts recommendation announcement.

What creators should take from the update
- Do not rely on reposting another creator’s Short with only cosmetic or template-driven edits; YouTube says channels mainly doing this without significant changes will likely get less Shorts-feed distribution.
- If you use a clip, make your contribution apparent through your own commentary, storytelling, editing, or perspective rather than assuming a technical alteration is enough.
- Judge performance using viewer response as well as originality: YouTube still cites watch choices, retention, engagement, personalization, competition, topic interest, and seasonality.
- Treat distribution, monetization eligibility, and copyright as separate questions. A format that adds value for recommendations is not automatically cleared under the other rules.
