Secondary reporting has discussed an A20 Pro chip and other possible upgrades. A report about leaked software imagery also described references to A20 Pro, a landscape front camera and an updated speaker system. What is confirmed about the current iPad mini?
Apple’s documented comparison point is the iPad mini announced on October 15, 2024. Its specifications include an A17 Pro chip and an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display, and Apple lists support for Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Should you buy an iPad mini now or wait?
If you need a small iPad now, the A17 Pro model is the one with published specifications and confirmed accessory support. If an OLED screen or a newer chip is essential to your decision, waiting for an Apple announcement may make sense—but the rumored October timing does not guarantee that a successor will appear or that it will include any particular feature. Do not assume existing cases or other accessories will fit a future model until its dimensions and compatibility are published.
Apple’s October 2024 announcement quoted Bob Borchers, its vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, describing the mini as “There is no other device in the world like iPad mini, beloved for its combination of powerful performance and versatility in our most ultraportable design.” That is Apple’s promotional characterization, not an independent performance assessment.
