For most Apple Watch SE owners, AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is the safer default when you want Apple-authorized service, direct Apple support and a published fee schedule. Carrier insurance can be the better value when your account-specific premium is lower, its replacement process is more convenient, or you already receive it as part of a broader protection bundle.
Compare the total premiums for the period you expect to keep the watch, then add the fee you would pay for the most likely claim. In the current U.S. Apple schedule cited here, an Apple Watch outside the Ultra and Hermès categories has a $69 accidental-damage service fee and a $119 theft-or-loss deductible. Carrier premiums and deductibles vary by plan, state, model and claim channel, so there is no universal carrier answer.

What you are actually comparing
AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is an Apple service contract combined with an insurance policy. The service contract covers Apple hardware service, technical support, battery depletion and accidental damage. The insurance portion addresses loss and theft under its own conditions and claim limits.
Carrier insurance is not one standardized product. A wireless carrier may administer coverage itself or through an insurer, and the price and deductible can change with your state, account, watch configuration, enrollment date and selected protection tier. Two customers with the same Apple Watch SE can therefore receive different terms.

AppleCare+ fees and limits for Apple Watch SE
Apple’s current U.S. disclosure for Apple Watch models excluding Ultra and Hermès lists a $69 accidental-damage service fee and a $119 theft-or-loss deductible. These are dated plan terms; check the price and terms shown for your country, watch model and purchase date before enrolling.
Apple’s legal terms say AppleCare+ provides “unlimited incidents of accidental damage per device covered” while the plan remains active. That unlimited provision applies to accidental damage, not to theft or loss. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss allows up to two theft-or-loss incidents in any 12-month period.

The watch must also remain associated with your Apple Account during the claim process. If Find My was disabled, the account association was removed, or another eligibility condition is not met, the claim can fail even though the plan was purchased.
| AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss item | Apple Watch SE-relevant term in the cited U.S. disclosure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Accidental-damage service fee | $69 | Applies to the cited Apple Watch category excluding Ultra and Hermès; verify the current schedule for your model and country. |
| Theft-or-loss deductible | $119 | Applies to the cited U.S. schedule; a deductible is due for an approved theft or loss replacement. |
| Theft/loss claim limit | Up to two incidents every 12 months | Limit applies to theft or loss, not accidental damage. |
| Accidental-damage incident limit | Unlimited while the plan is active | Apple’s legal terms describe unlimited accidental-damage incidents per covered device; service fees and other terms still apply. |
| Find My requirement | Required for loss/theft claims | Find My must be on at the time of loss and throughout the claim. |

How carrier insurance differs
Carrier protection can cover loss, theft and damage, but the contract—not the marketing name—controls the result. Check four items before comparing it with AppleCare+: the recurring premium, the applicable deductible for your exact watch, the number of claims allowed and the replacement or repair process.
Verizon
Verizon’s Wireless Phone Protection FAQ describes coverage for loss, theft and damage but directs customers to its Products and plan perks information for the specific monthly charge and deductible. Verizon therefore does not provide one universal price in the FAQ. Your account’s plan name, state and Apple Watch configuration determine the amount you would pay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen checking a Verizon option, open the protection plan details attached to your line and record the monthly premium, Apple Watch eligibility, damage deductible, loss/theft deductible, claim limit and any shipping or replacement conditions. Do not substitute a phone deductible for the watch deductible.
AT&T
AT&T schedules show why the exact plan and configuration matter. One Mobile Insurance with Tech Support schedule lists a $50 replacement-device deductible for an Apple Watch SE GPS + Cellular 40mm tier. A Protect Advantage schedule lists $25 for an Apple Watch SE GPS + Cellular 40mm in the cited table.
Those figures are not a universal AT&T price. They apply to the named plan schedules and device tier; state disclosures, plan version and claim channel can change the amount. Confirm whether your watch is GPS-only or GPS + Cellular, its case size and the protection plan currently attached to your line.

| Provider or plan example | Published figure in the cited material | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss | $69 accidental damage; $119 theft/loss for the cited U.S. non-Ultra/Hermès category | Country, purchase date, watch category, current plan terms and remaining claim allowance. |

Accidental damage: which option is stronger?
AppleCare+ has two notable advantages for accidental damage. First, Apple publishes a $69 service fee for the cited watch category, making the fee easy to identify before a claim. Second, Apple’s legal terms describe unlimited accidental-damage incidents while the plan is active. Each incident can still require the service fee, and Apple may apply other contract conditions.
Carrier damage deductibles are plan-specific. A carrier may repair the watch, replace it with a certified device or use another fulfillment method. The deductible can be lower or higher than $69, and the plan may impose claim-frequency limits that differ from AppleCare’s accidental-damage provision.
If you expect repeated accidental damage—for example, you work around tools, play contact sports or routinely wear the watch in situations where the glass or case is exposed—compare the number of incidents permitted, not only the first deductible. A low first-claim fee does not help if later claims are capped or excluded.
Loss and theft: requirements matter more than the headline price
AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss covers a lost or stolen Apple Watch SE up to two times every 12 months, subject to the $119 deductible in the cited U.S. schedule and the Find My and Apple Account requirements. Enable Find My before anything goes wrong and leave it enabled while a claim is processed.
Carrier plans also commonly advertise loss and theft coverage, but the limit, deductible, proof requirements and replacement logistics differ by contract. Some plans may require a police report or additional verification; do not assume those requirements are identical to Apple’s. Read the loss/theft section of your plan rather than relying on a phone-protection summary.

Total cost: use the ownership-period calculation
A deductible alone cannot tell you which plan is cheaper. Use this calculation for the period you expect to keep the watch:
Total protection cost = (monthly premium × number of months) + claim fees you realistically expect to pay.
Run at least three scenarios:
- No claim: compare the total premiums you would pay for the entire ownership period.
- One accidental-damage claim: add Apple’s $69 fee or the carrier’s damage deductible for your exact plan.
- One loss or theft claim: add Apple’s $119 deductible or the carrier’s loss/theft deductible, then check whether a second claim is available if needed.
Use the actual monthly amount shown in your account or Apple checkout. If a carrier premium is not displayed until enrollment, ask for the written schedule before accepting coverage. A carrier can have a lower deductible but still cost more overall if its monthly premium is substantially higher over several years.
A break-even method
To compare AppleCare+ with a carrier plan, subtract the two monthly premiums and multiply by the number of months you will keep the watch. Then compare the difference in claim fees for the type of claim you expect. For example, if a carrier’s damage deductible is lower than $69, calculate how much extra premium you would pay to obtain that lower fee. The lower deductible is financially favorable only if the premium difference and your expected claim frequency justify it.

Service and replacement experience
AppleCare+ routes support and replacement through Apple. That gives you a single Apple support path for covered hardware service, technical support and eligible theft/loss claims. The exact repair, replacement stock, shipping method and turnaround depend on location and availability; no authoritative cross-provider statistics establish that one route is always faster.
Carrier insurance routes the claim through the carrier or its insurance administrator. The outcome may be a certified replacement rather than a repair, and the carrier can control shipping, activation and claim steps. Ask whether the replacement is the same Apple Watch SE generation, case size and GPS/GPS + Cellular configuration, or merely a functionally equivalent device.
Neither route should be judged solely by a promised replacement date. Confirm what happens to cellular service, whether you must unpair the old watch, how activation lock is handled and whether accessories are excluded.
Can you keep AppleCare+ if you switch carriers?
AppleCare+ is an Apple contract, while carrier insurance is tied to a carrier account or line. Moving your cellular service therefore changes the carrier-insurance relationship, but it does not turn AppleCare+ into a carrier product. Check the Apple plan status associated with your device and keep your purchase documentation.
If you move from a carrier plan to AppleCare+, verify that the watch is still within Apple’s enrollment window and that Apple accepts its condition and purchase date. If you move away from a carrier, ask whether coverage ends immediately, continues through a billing cycle or requires cancellation. The answer is controlled by that carrier’s terms.
Eligibility checks before buying
- Model: identify Apple Watch SE generation, case size and GPS versus GPS + Cellular. Deductible tables can distinguish these details.
- Region: Apple’s cited $69/$119 schedule is U.S.-specific; other countries use different fees and legal terms.
- Purchase date and condition: AppleCare enrollment windows and inspection requirements can vary.
- Cellular account: carrier insurance may require an active line and a supported cellular model.
- Claim limits: record separate limits for accidental damage, loss and theft.
- Account settings: enable Find My and keep the watch linked to the correct Apple Account.
- Exclusions: read exclusions for intentional damage, cosmetic wear, failure to follow security requirements and accessories.
Decision guide: choose the option that fits your risk
Choose AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss when
- You want Apple as the primary support and replacement channel.
- You value a published $69 accidental-damage fee for the cited U.S. watch category.
- You want unlimited accidental-damage incidents while the plan remains active.
- You are comfortable meeting Find My and Apple Account requirements for loss or theft.
- Your carrier’s monthly premium or deductible is not clearly lower after calculating the full ownership cost.
Choose carrier insurance when
- Your account shows a materially lower total premium for the time you will keep the watch.
- The carrier’s deductible for your exact Apple Watch SE configuration is lower and the claim limit meets your needs.
- You prefer carrier-managed replacement, shipping or line-level billing.
- You already receive relevant protection as part of a bundle and have confirmed that the watch is eligible.
Consider self-insuring when
If replacing the watch would not disrupt your budget, set aside the amount you would otherwise pay in premiums. This avoids claim rules but leaves you responsible for the full replacement cost after loss or theft. It is only sensible if you can replace the watch immediately and are comfortable forgoing Apple-authorized support coverage.
Five-minute comparison checklist
- Write down the watch generation, case size, finish and GPS or GPS + Cellular designation.
- Record AppleCare+ monthly or one-time pricing, the $69 damage fee and the $119 theft/loss deductible shown for your region, if those terms apply.
- Open your carrier’s current protection contract and record its monthly premium, damage deductible, loss/theft deductible and claim limits.
- Multiply each premium by the number of months you expect to own the watch.
- Calculate totals for no claim, one damage claim and one loss/theft claim.
- Check service logistics: Apple repair versus carrier replacement, shipping, activation and whether an equivalent model is guaranteed.
- Enable Find My, retain proof of purchase and save the plan documents before you need them.
Common mistakes that make coverage comparisons misleading
- Comparing a phone deductible with a watch deductible: carrier schedules can place Apple Watch SE in a separate device tier.
- Ignoring GPS versus Cellular: AT&T’s cited figures are specifically for a GPS + Cellular 40mm tier; they cannot be generalized to every SE.
- Treating a promotional premium as permanent: carrier prices can change when a promotion ends or a plan is modified.
- Assuming unlimited means free: Apple’s unlimited accidental-damage wording does not remove the per-incident service fee.
- Disabling Find My after a loss: Apple requires Find My to remain enabled during the claim process.
- Assuming every replacement is identical: ask whether the replacement matches generation, case size, connectivity and color.
- Buying coverage after an incident: enrollment windows and condition requirements exist to prevent post-loss enrollment.
Bottom-line recommendation
For a typical Apple Watch SE owner in the United States, start with AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss if direct Apple support, a known $69 accidental-damage fee, unlimited accidental-damage incidents while active and up to two theft/loss claims per 12 months are worth the premium. Choose carrier insurance instead when your written account terms show a lower total cost or materially better replacement convenience for your exact model and state. Recalculate whenever you change carriers, upgrade the watch or the protection plan’s premium changes.
