AppleCare+ Explained: What It Covers and When It’s Worth Buying

AppleCare+ covers accidental damage but still charges service fees. Learn how theft and loss plans differ, what AppleCare One costs in the US, and how to judge whether coverage suits your device and budget.

AppleCare+ adds hardware service and technical support, including unlimited accidental-damage incidents for each covered device—but you still pay a service fee for each eligible accidental-damage claim. Theft and loss protection is a separate benefit with its own eligibility rules and claim limits. Whether the plan is worth buying depends on your device, the exact plan price and fees, how long you will keep the device, and how much repair or replacement risk you are willing to absorb.

The prices, enrollment details and plan terms below refer to Apple’s US materials reviewed as of October 4, 2026. Apple’s terms and prices vary by product and location, so confirm the offer for your device before buying.

What does AppleCare+ cover?

AppleCare+ adds hardware service and technical support from Apple. Apple describes drops and spills as examples of accidental damage, and says its plans cover unlimited accidental-damage incidents per covered device. “Unlimited” refers to the number of covered incidents; it does not mean repairs are free. A service fee applies to accidental-damage claims, and the amount depends on the device, damage category, plan and location.

Apple also says battery service is covered at no additional fee if the covered product’s battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity. Check the terms for the particular product and plan, since benefits can differ.

Coverage for iPad accessories

For a covered iPad, Apple says AppleCare+ or AppleCare One includes accidental-damage coverage for one Apple Pencil and one Apple-branded keyboard used with that iPad. Apple’s overview also includes in-box cables and power adapters. This does not establish coverage for unrelated accessories or theft or loss of accessories.

Does AppleCare+ cover theft or loss?

Standard AppleCare+ accidental-damage coverage is distinct from theft and loss protection. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss adds that protection for eligible devices, with up to two theft-or-loss incidents in 12 months under Apple’s legal overview. AppleCare One also includes theft-and-loss protection for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, subject to eligibility and plan-wide limits.

For AppleCare One, Apple’s current US overview lists three total claims per year for Individual and six for Family. Apple’s reviewed US Individual disclosure describes up to three theft-or-loss claims in 12 months and says adding devices does not raise that limit. These are plan-level limits, not a promise of that many claims for every device. The plan’s insurance documents and terms govern.

Find My is required for an AppleCare One theft-or-loss claim

Apple’s reviewed US disclosure requires Find My to be enabled when the device is lost or stolen and to remain enabled; the device must also remain associated with the AppleCare One plan and Apple Account through the claims process. Sharing location alone does not turn on the required Find My function. Review the applicable plan documents for all claim conditions.

How much does AppleCare+ cost?

AppleCare+ prices for an individual device depend on its model. Apple’s US overview identifies models but does not provide readable price values for every model in the material reviewed here, so there is no reliable single price to quote. Check the exact device’s offer in Settings or Apple’s current purchase flow. Service fees and theft-or-loss deductibles also vary by product, plan and claim type.

When is AppleCare+ worth buying?

There is no universal break-even point in Apple’s published materials: they do not establish how likely a particular owner is to damage or lose a device, or how much buyers typically save with AppleCare+. Decide by comparing the plan’s total cost with the repair or replacement expenses you realistically might face, rather than treating a claim limit or service fee as evidence that you will save money.

  1. Set the coverage period. Estimate how long you expect to keep the device and calculate the premiums over that period using the current price for your exact plan.
  2. Add the cost of a claim. Include the applicable accidental-damage service fee or theft-and-loss deductible for the scenario you are weighing.
  3. Compare with your own exposure. Consider the likely repair or replacement bill if you pay out of pocket, along with whether Apple’s service and support are worth the premium to you.
  4. Assess theft and loss separately. Check whether the plan covers your device, its claim cap and deductible, and any conditions such as Find My. Do not assume accidental-damage coverage includes a lost or stolen device.
  5. Compare household coverage if relevant. If several eligible devices are involved, compare AppleCare One’s cost with separate device plans, taking account of each product’s eligibility and the plan-wide theft-and-loss claim limit.

AppleCare+ may make sense for an owner who values Apple’s service and support or would find a qualifying repair bill difficult to absorb. It may be less compelling if the total premium plus likely claim fees outweighs the repair risk and support benefits you personally value. Those are individual trade-offs, not a forecast of damage or savings.

Who can enroll, and when?

Apple’s overview says a buyer can start AppleCare+ or AppleCare One Individual when purchasing a new product through Apple, and says a plan can be added from Settings within 60 days of a new Apple purchase. Apple Support documents product- and plan-specific enrollment windows, including shorter windows for some product categories. Availability may also vary by region and plan, so do not assume the 60-day period applies to every device.

To check an iPhone or iPad, open Settings → General → AppleCare & Warranty. You can also use Apple’s coverage checker. Confirm eligibility for the specific product there before relying on a general enrollment window.

Adding existing products to AppleCare One

Apple says eligible products already owned may be added to AppleCare One if they meet its conditions. The US overview generally describes existing products as needing to be in good condition and four years old or newer; headphones have a separate one-year limit. Eligibility is not automatic: Apple may require diagnostics or an inspection. Family coverage is for eligible devices belonging to up to six people in a Family Sharing group.
