Yes—some Apple Watch models can screen for patterns associated with moderate to severe sleep apnea, but they do not diagnose it. Sleep Apnea Notifications use the watch’s accelerometer during sleep, summarize breathing-disturbance data over repeated nights, and may alert you when the pattern warrants medical follow-up. A notification is a reason to speak with a clinician; no notification does not rule sleep apnea out.
What Apple Watch Sleep Apnea Notifications actually do
Sleep Apnea Notifications are an opportunistic risk-screening feature. While you sleep, the Apple Watch accelerometer records tiny wrist movements that can accompany interruptions in normal breathing. Apple converts the nightly signal into a metric called Breathing Disturbances, expressed as events per hour.

The watch does not measure every apnea directly, continuously monitor blood oxygen as a diagnostic test, or sound an alarm each time breathing changes. Instead, it looks for a sustained pattern across many nights. The result is a passive screen intended to prompt a conversation with a healthcare professional.

Apple’s user guidance says the watch “is not a medical device and is not intended to replace talking with your doctor for diagnosis, treatment, or monitoring of sleep apnea.” That limitation is central: the feature can identify elevated risk, but a clinician and a validated sleep study are needed to establish whether sleep apnea is present and how severe it is.

Which Apple Watch models support the feature?
Apple Support lists the following hardware as eligible:
| Apple Watch model | Other requirements | What is not supported |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Series 9 or later | Latest available watchOS, paired with a compatible iPhone, and an authorized country or region | Older Series models |
| Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later | Latest available watchOS, paired with a compatible iPhone, and an authorized country or region | First-generation Apple Watch Ultra |
| Apple Watch SE 3 | Latest available watchOS, paired with a compatible iPhone, and an authorized country or region | Earlier SE generations |
Hardware alone is not enough. Update the watch to the latest watchOS offered for that model, keep the paired iPhone compatible and updated, and check whether Apple has authorized the feature where you live. Apple can enable or withhold health features by country or region because regulatory permissions differ. If Sleep Apnea Notifications do not appear after setup, model, software, pairing, and regional availability are the first things to verify.
How the 30-day analysis works
Nightly breathing-disturbance data
The accelerometer senses subtle wrist motion associated with changes in respiratory patterns. The watch reduces each sleep recording to a breathing-disturbance value rather than presenting a clinical apnea-hypopnea index. Movement, a loose fit, short sleep, or an incomplete recording can reduce the usable information from a night.

Apple’s instructions call for regular overnight wear during a 30-day period. The algorithm requires at least 10 nights with usable breathing-disturbance data before it can produce a notification. Wearing the watch only occasionally can leave the window without enough evidence.

Non-rolling 30-day windows
The feature evaluates sequential, non-rolling 30-day windows that begin after onboarding. In a qualifying window, at least half of the available sleep values must be elevated before the notification algorithm can surface a possible-sleep-apnea alert. This design looks for persistence, not a single unusual night.
Consequently, Sleep Apnea Notifications are not an instant warning for an individual pause in breathing. A missing alert can mean that there was not enough valid data, that the pattern did not cross the notification threshold, or that the screen failed to identify a person’s condition. It cannot be interpreted as proof that breathing is normal.
How to set up and use Sleep Apnea Notifications
- Confirm compatibility. Check that the watch is Series 9 or newer, Ultra 2 or newer, or SE 3. Verify the watchOS version, paired iPhone, and local feature availability.
- Complete the health setup. In the Health app on the paired iPhone, follow the prompts for Sleep Apnea Notifications. Enter requested health information accurately; the feature is designed for people who have not already received a sleep-apnea diagnosis.
- Wear the watch correctly overnight. Keep it snug enough for the sensors to remain stable but comfortable enough to sleep in. Charge before bed or use a routine that leaves the watch ready for each night.
- Build a complete 30-day record. Aim to wear the watch during every sleep period. The algorithm needs at least 10 usable nights, and more consistent data makes the window less vulnerable to gaps.
- Review the result in Health. If Apple identifies a qualifying pattern, the notification and related breathing-disturbance information appear in the Health app. Read the alert as a risk signal, not a diagnosis.
- Arrange clinical follow-up when alerted. Share the notification and relevant symptoms with a healthcare professional. Do not change medication, driving habits, or treatment solely on the basis of the watch result without medical advice.
How accurate is Apple Watch sleep-apnea detection?
Apple’s September 2024 clinical validation enrolled 1,499 participants; 1,448 completed the study. The reported weighted overall sensitivity was 66.3% (95% confidence interval, 62.2%–70.3%) and weighted overall specificity was 98.5% (95% confidence interval, 98.0%–99.0%). For severe sleep apnea, sensitivity was 89.1% (95% confidence interval, 83.7%–93.2%).
| Measure | Published result | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Overall sensitivity | 66.3% (95% CI 62.2%–70.3%) | Some people with moderate or severe sleep apnea will not receive a notification. |
| Overall specificity | 98.5% (95% CI 98.0%–99.0%) | Most people without the targeted pattern are unlikely to be alerted, reducing false positives in a passive screen. |
| Severe sleep-apnea sensitivity | 89.1% (95% CI 83.7%–93.2%) | The screen detected a larger share of severe cases than the overall group in the validation study. |
Sensitivity and specificity describe test performance in the validation population; they do not predict exactly what will happen for an individual. The high specificity is useful for a recurring, passive notification because frequent false alarms would undermine trust. The lower overall sensitivity is equally important: a reassuring watch does not exclude disease, especially when symptoms or risk factors are present.

What evidence and regulatory clearance mean
The FDA submission for the Sleep Apnea Notification Feature reports that the algorithm was trained on more than 11,000 nights of concurrent Apple Watch accelerometer data and clinical reference data, including polysomnography and home sleep-apnea test recordings. Training data help develop an algorithm; they do not turn the watch into a replacement for those clinical tests.
FDA’s database lists the Sleep Apnea Notification Feature (SANF), 510(k) K240929, with a substantially equivalent decision dated September 13, 2024. FDA describes product code QZW as an over-the-counter device intended to provide a notification of sleep-apnea risk in users who have not previously been diagnosed with sleep apnea.
“Substantially equivalent” clearance and the QZW intended use describe a risk-notification device. They do not authorize claims that the watch diagnoses, grades, treats, or monitors established sleep apnea. Apple’s own warning directs users to a doctor for diagnosis, treatment, or monitoring.
What to do if your watch sends a notification
1. Treat it as a prompt, not a verdict
Make a healthcare appointment and bring the notification, your sleep history, and any observations from a bed partner. Mention loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, gasping, morning headaches, dry mouth, excessive daytime sleepiness, concentration problems, or difficult-to-control blood pressure if they apply. Symptoms can matter even when the watch has not alerted you.

2. Expect a clinician to choose the next test
A clinician may review your symptoms and risk factors and decide whether a home sleep-apnea test or an overnight laboratory sleep study is appropriate. These tests use clinical sensors and are interpreted in a medical context. The Apple Watch result can add useful context but cannot replace either test.
3. Seek urgent help for urgent symptoms
A notification is not an emergency alarm. However, severe breathing difficulty while awake, chest pain, fainting, blue or gray lips, or other acute symptoms require urgent medical attention independent of the watch result.
Why you might not receive a notification
- Not enough nights: Fewer than 10 usable recordings in the 30-day window cannot satisfy the minimum data requirement.
- Inconsistent wear: Removing the watch, charging it overnight, or sleeping without a stable fit creates gaps or noisy measurements.
- Pattern below the threshold: The recorded values may not be elevated on at least half of the nights in that window.
- Condition outside the screen’s target: The feature is designed to flag patterns consistent with moderate to severe sleep apnea, not every breathing disorder or every mild case.
- Unsupported setup: An ineligible model, outdated watchOS, incompatible iPhone, or unavailable region can prevent the feature from running.
None of these explanations makes a missing notification a clean bill of health. If a clinician suspects sleep apnea, follow that evaluation even when the watch reports no alert.

- Wear the watch on the same wrist and keep the fit secure without making it uncomfortable.
- Keep the watch charged before sleep and avoid long periods without it during the 30-day window.
- Allow the watch to complete a normal sleep recording rather than relying on very short naps as your main data source.
- Keep watchOS and the paired iPhone current, then reopen the Health app if results do not appear after a recorded night.
- Check that Sleep Apnea Notifications remain enabled after changing devices, restoring a backup, or updating software.
How this feature differs from a diagnosis or a dedicated test
| Comparison point | Apple Watch Sleep Apnea Notifications | Clinical evaluation |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use | Notification of risk for a possible sleep-apnea pattern | Diagnosis and severity assessment |
| Primary signal | Accelerometer-derived wrist movement and breathing-disturbance events per hour | Clinical sensors used in a home sleep-apnea test or laboratory polysomnography |
| Data requirement | At least 10 usable nights within a sequential 30-day window; at least half of values elevated for a notification | Usually a clinician-directed test night or laboratory protocol, interpreted with symptoms and medical history |
| Interpretation | Automated screening result | Healthcare professional interpretation |
| Outcome | Possible-sleep-apnea notification or no notification | Medical diagnosis, severity classification, and treatment plan when indicated |
When comparing any wearable or home device, use these same axes: regulatory intended use, sensor method, amount of overnight data required, published sensitivity and specificity, supported phones and regions, and whether a clinician must interpret the result. Do not treat an unsupported accuracy percentage as equivalent to a cleared diagnostic test.

Common questions readers ask
Does every Apple Watch detect sleep apnea?
No. Apple lists Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, and SE 3, with current software, a compatible iPhone, and regional authorization. The first-generation Ultra and older Series models are not listed.
How long does it take to get a result?
The algorithm needs at least 10 usable nights inside a 30-day analysis window, so it is not an immediate result from one night. A notification can appear only after the qualifying pattern is evaluated.
Can the watch detect mild sleep apnea?
The feature is intended to identify patterns consistent with moderate to severe sleep apnea. Its published validation does not make a no-notification result a way to exclude mild disease or other sleep-related breathing problems.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I buy an Apple Watch instead of getting tested?
No. The watch can provide a convenient risk screen for supported users, but FDA clearance and Apple’s labeling cover notification of risk, not diagnosis or treatment. If you have symptoms or risk factors, seek clinical evaluation regardless of whether you own a supported watch.
The practical bottom line
Use Sleep Apnea Notifications as an early-warning screen: wear a supported Apple Watch consistently, allow the full 30-day process to collect data, and follow up with a clinician if an alert appears. Remember the two limits that matter most—overall sensitivity was 66.3% in Apple’s 2024 validation, and the feature is cleared to notify about risk rather than diagnose sleep apnea. A notification deserves medical follow-up, while no notification should never overrule symptoms or a clinician’s recommendation.
