Start with three targeted changes: turn off Always On if you are comfortable tapping or raising your wrist to check the time, narrow Background App Refresh to apps that genuinely need it, and route notifications per app instead of allowing every alert to reach your wrist immediately. These changes preserve core watch functions while cutting avoidable screen, processor and radio activity. Use Low Power Mode only when you need maximum runtime, because it can delay notifications and reduce health measurements.
The best order for changing Apple Watch settings
Battery drain and notification overload usually come from different systems. Display wake-ups consume power, background refresh keeps apps working between uses, and unrestricted notifications repeatedly wake the watch and your attention. Adjust the narrowest setting that solves your problem before using a broad battery-saving mode.

There is no universal percentage of battery saved by any one switch: screen brightness, cellular use, workouts, signal strength, temperature, watch age and model all affect runtime. Treat the table as a priority order, not a laboratory promise.

Always On is the most direct display setting to change. With it enabled, the watch face remains dimly visible while your wrist is down. Apple states that turning Always On off can increase battery life. The cost is convenience: you need a wrist raise or a tap to see the display.

Disable Always On completely
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Tap Always On.
- Turn Always On off.
This is a targeted, reversible change. It does not disable notifications, workouts or complications; it only changes what the screen does while you are not actively looking at it.
Keep the feature but reduce wrist-down activity
If you rely on a persistent clock, keep Always On and use its options to limit what appears while the wrist is down. Depending on watch model and watchOS version, you can restrict complication data, Live Activities, notifications or individual apps in the Always On settings. This middle ground keeps the time visible while reducing animated or frequently changing content.
2. Narrow Background App Refresh
Background App Refresh lets apps fetch information when you are not using them. Apple warns that refreshing apps in the background can use power. Turning it off globally saves the most background activity, but selecting only unnecessary apps usually preserves a smoother experience.
Change refresh permissions
- Open Settings on the Apple Watch.
- Tap General, then Background App Refresh.
- Turn the global switch off, or leave it on and disable individual apps that do not need fresh content.
Review apps that update location, news, weather, travel or social feeds. Keep refresh enabled for an app whose complication or glance needs current information. Disabling an app’s switch does not guarantee that its complication stops updating: complications on the active watch face can continue refreshing.

When refresh should stay enabled
Leave refresh on for time-sensitive information you actually use, such as a workout-related complication or a frequently checked schedule. If the watch face is crowded with data sources, remove unused complications as well; an active complication can continue to request updates even after its parent app’s refresh switch is off.
3. Route notifications per app instead of allowing everything
Useful notifications come from deliberate delivery choices, not from letting every installed iPhone app alert your wrist. Apple Watch notification settings mirror iPhone settings by default, but you can customize each app.
Set an app to alert, deliver quietly or stay silent
- On the paired iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch, then Notifications.
- Select an app.
- Choose Custom.
- Select Allow Notifications for alerts you need immediately, Send to Notification Center for low-priority items, or Notifications Off for noise.
Use immediate alerts for people, safety, appointments and genuinely time-sensitive work. Send shopping, social, game and promotional alerts to Notification Center so they remain available without repeatedly waking the watch. Turn off duplicate alerts from apps whose messages you already handle on the iPhone.
Understand where an alert appears
When the iPhone is unlocked, notifications normally appear there rather than on the watch. When the iPhone is locked or asleep, eligible notifications go to the watch. A watch that is locked, in a passcode state or not worn can change this behavior. These handoff rules mean that reducing app permissions is more reliable than trying to silence every alert with a single watch-wide switch.

4. Improve notification privacy and glance behavior
Notification controls on the watch determine how much information appears before you deliberately look at it. They also affect whether someone nearby can read an alert while your wrist is turned away.
Use an extra tap for message content
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn on Tap to Show Full Notification.
You will still see that an alert arrived, but the full message stays behind an additional tap. This is useful in meetings, public places or anywhere a preview could expose private text. It adds a small interaction but does not stop the alert from arriving.
Choose what happens while your wrist is down
In the same Notifications screen, review Show Notifications on Wrist Down. Enabling it makes alerts visible even when the watch is turned away, which helps when you cannot raise your wrist. Disabling it reduces visible alert activity and can keep sensitive previews from appearing when you are not looking. Pair this choice with per-app permissions rather than using it as a substitute for removing unwanted alerts.
Control the locked summary
Show Summary When Locked controls whether a notification summary is shown while the watch is locked. Keep it on if you need a quick indication that something arrived; turn it off when revealing even an app name on the lock screen is undesirable. The exact availability of these options can vary with watchOS version and model.

5. Stop accidental screen wakes
Repeated unintended wake-ups waste power and make notifications feel more intrusive. In Settings > Display & Brightness, review three controls: Wake on Wrist Raise, Wake on Crown Rotation and Wake Duration.
Reduce false activations
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Turn off Wake on Wrist Raise if arm movement frequently lights the display.
- Turn off Wake on Crown Rotation if clothing or hand position rotates the Digital Crown.
- Choose the shorter available Wake Duration if the screen remains lit longer than necessary.
Disabling a trigger means you may need to tap the display or press a button more often. For a temporary no-wake period, open Control Center and enable Theater Mode; this suppresses wrist-raise waking until you turn it off.

Low Power Mode is the broadest intervention. It is appropriate for travel, a long workout, a day away from a charger or a battery that is running down—not as an automatic default for every day.

Turn it on quickly
- Press the watch’s side button to open Control Center.
- Tap the battery percentage.
- Turn on Low Power Mode and choose a duration if prompted.
You can also open Settings > Battery and enable it there. Apple says the watch can ask whether to turn it on when the battery reaches 10 percent.

Know what you give up
Low Power Mode turns off Always On and reduces or disables some background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements. It can delay other notifications and limit some Wi-Fi and cellular behavior. Health-feature availability also varies by Apple Watch model and region, so check the features you rely on before enabling it during a workout or health-related situation. If continuous measurements or prompt alerts matter more than extra runtime, use the targeted settings above instead.
How it turns off
In normal use, Apple says Low Power Mode turns off automatically when the watch charges above 80 percent, unless you selected a multi-day duration. You can switch it off manually from the Battery controls at any time.

Charging when settings changes are not enough
Settings reduce consumption, but a short charge can be the simplest fix. Apple lists the Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable (1 m) as a magnetic snap-on cable that supports fast charging when paired with a compatible 20W USB-C adapter. Compatibility and charging speed depend on the watch model and adapter.

On Apple’s 2026 product information, a 15-minute charge is listed as adding up to 8 hours for Apple Watch SE 3, 12 hours for Series 12, and 18 hours for Ultra 4. These are model-specific figures; do not generalize them to older Apple Watch models. Actual added runtime varies with use, connectivity and battery condition.
Troubleshoot the most common outcomes
The battery still drops quickly
- Check whether cellular is enabled where the iPhone is nearby; poor signal can increase radio use.
- Look for a complication that updates frequently even after its app refresh switch was disabled.
- Shorten Wake Duration and disable the wake trigger that is activating accidentally.
- Use Low Power Mode temporarily and note whether runtime improves; if it does, re-enable features one at a time to identify the largest contributor.
Important notifications arrive late or not at all
- Return to iPhone Apple Watch app > My Watch > Notifications and confirm the app is set to Allow Notifications.
- Check whether the iPhone is unlocked, the watch is locked, or a Focus mode is filtering alerts.
- If Low Power Mode is on, remember that Apple warns some notifications may be delayed.
- Verify that the watch has a connection to the iPhone, Wi-Fi or cellular service appropriate to your model.
The screen is too dark or inconvenient
Re-enable Always On if constant glanceability is more valuable than the extra battery. Alternatively, keep it off and use Wake on Wrist Raise, a tap or the side button. A setting that saves power but makes you check the iPhone repeatedly may not be an effective trade for your routine.
Model and software caveats
Menu names and feature availability vary by watchOS version and Apple Watch model. Always On is unavailable while Low Power Mode is active. Health measurements, cellular behavior and fast-charging performance are also model-dependent. After a watchOS update, revisit these menus because Apple can add options or move controls. Make changes one at a time so you can tell which trade-off solved the original problem.
