How the two software approaches differ
Apple: a health-sensing and interpretation stack
Series 12 combines electrical and optical heart sensing with blood-oxygen and temperature sensing. Apple also identifies a Health Sensing System, an S11 chip, higher-frequency heart-rate and HRV measurements, and a readiness score. In practice, that gives the watch several layers of information: raw sensor readings, alerts when readings cross a threshold, and software that presents trends and readiness in the Health and Fitness workflow.
Apple’s documented health stack includes ECG, blood oxygen, temperature sensing, recovery HRV, high- and low-heart-rate alerts, irregular-rhythm notifications, Vitals and Readiness. The combination is important: a watch that only records workouts serves a different purpose from one that also surfaces daily physiological context and safety notifications.
Garmin: a connected training and sports-services platform
Venu 3 centers on Garmin Connect synchronization and the wider Garmin ecosystem. Its documented software supports health and wellness logging, hydration, menstrual and pregnancy tracking, Connect IQ, Garmin Pay, Garmin Golf and phone-assisted safety features. The platform is designed to keep activity and wellness information connected to Garmin’s training services rather than to an iPhone health workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
Garmin’s Venu 3 owner’s manual also documents incident detection, assistance and LiveTrack. These tools use a paired phone, a data plan and network coverage. They supplement, rather than replace, emergency services and personal judgment.
Feature comparison: what each watch documents
| Software area | Apple Watch Series 12 | Garmin Venu 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Health sensing | Electrical and optical heart sensing, blood oxygen, temperature sensing, ECG, higher-frequency heart-rate and HRV measurements | Health and wellness logging, hydration, menstrual and pregnancy tracking |
| Daily interpretation | Readiness, Vitals and recovery HRV | Garmin Connect synchronization and Garmin wellness records |
| Heart and rhythm alerts | High- and low-heart-rate alerts and irregular-rhythm notifications | The cited Venu 3 manual summary does not establish an equivalent ECG and rhythm-alert set |
| Phone and app workflow | Redesigned iPhone Health app with Insights and Longevity/Health Age features | Garmin Connect, Connect IQ, Garmin Pay and Garmin Golf |
| Safety | Health and safety functions integrated with Apple’s watch and iPhone experience | Incident detection, assistance and LiveTrack with a paired phone, data plan and network coverage |
| Golf | The documented comparison does not identify a comparable Apple golf service | Garmin Golf leaderboards for more than 43,000 courses |
The table shows why the answer depends on what “better” means. Series 12 covers more health-sensing and alert categories. Venu 3 offers a deeper set of Garmin-specific training and sports services.
Apple Watch Series 12 health software in detail
Readiness and Vitals
Readiness is Apple’s daily-style interpretation layer. Rather than leaving you to inspect individual heart-rate or HRV readings, the software is designed to present a readiness result alongside the underlying health context. Vitals provides a way to view key measurements together, making it easier to notice when a reading differs from your usual pattern.
The practical benefit is decision support: you can look at a single readiness or Vitals view before deciding whether to follow a planned workout, take an easier day or investigate a persistent change. A readiness score is not a diagnosis and should not be treated as proof that training is safe.

Heart-rate, HRV and ECG functions
Series 12’s electrical and optical heart sensors support ECG and heart-rate monitoring. Apple also documents higher-frequency heart-rate and HRV measurements and recovery HRV. More frequent measurements can provide a denser record for the watch’s trends and readiness features, although the available documentation does not provide a clinical accuracy comparison with Garmin.
High- and low-heart-rate alerts notify you when the watch detects readings outside thresholds you set or Apple defines in its software. Irregular-rhythm notifications are a separate safety-oriented function. These notifications can prompt you to seek professional advice, but they do not turn the watch into a diagnostic device.
Blood oxygen and temperature sensing
Apple lists blood oxygen and temperature sensing among Series 12’s health capabilities. Those sensors broaden the types of information available in the Health app beyond exercise heart rate. The available data does not establish a single worldwide availability policy for every sensing feature, so readers should confirm which functions are enabled for their region and watch configuration.
Health app, Insights and Health Age
The redesigned iPhone Health app adds Insights and Longevity/Health Age features to Apple’s health workflow. Instead of treating each measurement as an isolated number, these views are intended to help users interpret patterns over time and relate them to broader health goals.

Apple also describes an optional laboratory service in the Health app. In Apple’s 2026 description, the service covers more than 50 biomarkers for $119 at approximately 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations in the United States. That is an optional U.S. service, not a feature included with every watch purchase, and availability or price can change.
Garmin Venu 3 software in detail
Garmin Connect as the central record
Garmin Connect is the hub for synchronizing Venu 3 data and managing the Garmin account. Its value increases when you already own other Garmin devices or have established training history in the platform. Keeping activities, wellness logs and connected services in one account reduces the need to rebuild your records in a different ecosystem.
Connect IQ extends the watch with additional apps, data fields and watch-related software. Garmin Pay handles supported payment workflows, while Garmin Golf connects the watch to Garmin’s golf services.

Health, hydration and women’s-health logging
The Venu 3 manual documents health and wellness logging, hydration tracking, menstrual tracking and pregnancy tracking. These are useful for maintaining records and adding personal context to activity data. The cited documentation does not provide a complete feature-by-feature matrix for every sleep, HRV or recovery metric, so it would be misleading to assume that Venu 3’s software presents the same readiness and rhythm-alert experience as Series 12.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTraining continuity and sport services
Garmin’s strongest software argument is continuity. If your training history, workouts and device data already live in Garmin Connect, Venu 3 fits into that system without moving your routine to Apple’s Health and Fitness apps. Connect IQ adds sport-oriented customization, and Garmin’s broader services are designed around activity and training use.
For golfers, Garmin’s official Venu 3 series manual states that Garmin Golf provides leaderboards for more than 43,000 courses. A Garmin Golf membership may add green-contour data; the program’s regional pricing and exact availability were not established here.
Safety features that depend on a phone
Incident detection can send a message when a qualifying incident is detected, while Assistance lets the user request help and LiveTrack shares a session with selected contacts. Garmin states that these features require a paired phone, an active data plan and network coverage. They are therefore not equivalent to an independent satellite or cellular emergency communicator.
Garmin’s manual gives an important limitation in plain language: “The Garmin Connect app does not contact emergency services on your behalf.” Treat these tools as communication aids. Make sure your phone is charged, paired and connected before relying on them during an activity.
Which watch is better for specific health questions?
“Which one has the broader health feature set?”
Apple Watch Series 12. Apple’s documented list spans ECG, blood oxygen, temperature sensing, readiness, Vitals, recovery HRV, heart-rate thresholds and irregular-rhythm notifications. Garmin Venu 3’s documented strengths are health logging, hydration and women’s-health tracking, but the available manual summary does not establish the same breadth of sensing and alert categories.
“Which one is better for training?”
There are two valid answers. Choose Series 12 if you want readiness, Vitals and recovery HRV integrated with Apple’s Health and Fitness workflow. Choose Venu 3 if your training decisions depend on Garmin Connect history, Garmin’s sport services, Connect IQ or Garmin Golf. For an existing Garmin user, continuity can matter more than the number of sensors listed on a specification page.

“Which one is better for sleep, HRV and recovery?”
Series 12 has the clearest documented case for HRV and recovery interpretation: Apple specifically identifies higher-frequency HRV measurements, recovery HRV, Readiness and Vitals. The Venu 3 documentation cited for this comparison confirms health and wellness logging but does not supply a complete, directly comparable list of sleep, HRV and recovery outputs. If those categories are your deciding criteria, compare the exact screens and metrics available in your region before buying.
“Which one is better for safety?”
Series 12 is the stronger choice for readers who want health alerts integrated with an iPhone-centered experience. Venu 3 offers incident detection, Assistance and LiveTrack, but those functions depend on a paired phone, data service and network coverage. Neither should be treated as a substitute for emergency services or medical care.

- Identify your phone ecosystem. If your everyday health records and alerts are on an iPhone, Series 12 fits the existing Health app workflow. If Garmin Connect already contains your training history, Venu 3 avoids an ecosystem change.
- Rank the measurements you will actually use. Put ECG, blood oxygen, temperature, readiness, Vitals, HRV and rhythm alerts on your list if you want Apple’s broader sensing stack. Put hydration, menstrual or pregnancy logging and Garmin’s training services on the list if those are more relevant.
- Decide whether interpretation or continuity matters more. Apple’s software emphasizes combining measurements into readiness and health views. Garmin emphasizes keeping activities and sport services together in Garmin Connect.
- Check safety prerequisites. For Venu 3, confirm that your phone, data plan and network coverage will be available during the activities where you plan to use incident detection, Assistance or LiveTrack.
- Check regional availability before paying. Apple’s optional laboratory service is described for approximately 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations in the United States at $119. Garmin Golf membership details and regional pricing were not established in the cited material.
- Separate wellness software from medical advice. Use alerts and trends as prompts to review your condition with a qualified professional, not as a diagnosis or a reason to ignore symptoms.
Important limitations and purchase caveats
Software scope is not accuracy testing
This comparison measures documented capabilities, not whether one watch produces more accurate heart-rate, HRV, ECG, sleep or workout data under laboratory or real-world conditions. No independent accuracy result is established here.
Features and prices can change
Firmware updates, regional rules and service changes can alter what appears in either platform. Current regional prices, battery-life testing, subscription costs and retail stock were not verified. Confirm the current product page and app experience for your country before purchase.
Do not assume every health function is enabled everywhere
Apple’s health features can be subject to regional availability and configuration. The $119 laboratory service is specifically described for the United States, at approximately 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations, and is optional. Garmin’s safety functions require the phone and connectivity conditions described above.
Safety services have boundaries
Incident detection and assistance can fail if the watch cannot detect an event, the phone is unavailable, coverage is absent or the user cannot respond. Garmin’s warning that Garmin Connect does not contact emergency services on your behalf should be treated as a core limitation, not a footnote.
Verdict
For the widest documented health and safety software, Apple Watch Series 12 is the better choice. Its sensing hardware and software cover ECG, blood oxygen, temperature, readiness, Vitals, HRV, heart-rate alerts and irregular-rhythm notifications, with an expanded iPhone Health app for interpretation.
Garmin Venu 3 remains the better choice for Garmin users and sport-focused buyers who value Garmin Connect continuity, Connect IQ, Garmin Golf and phone-assisted activity safety. The right decision is therefore not simply “more features”: it is whether you want Apple’s broader health stack or Garmin’s established training and sports ecosystem.
