No—most Apple Watch owners do not need a cellular plan. Choose GPS if you usually have your iPhone with you, or can rely on Wi-Fi when you leave it behind. Choose GPS + Cellular if you regularly go out without your iPhone and want the watch to stay connected for calls, messages, and other online features. Cellular service requires a separate, eligible plan from a supported carrier, and extended cellular use can use more battery.
What changes between GPS and GPS + Cellular?
Both versions can track workouts and perform basic timekeeping. The key difference is how the watch connects to the internet and cellular networks when your iPhone is not nearby.

| Situation | GPS-only Apple Watch | GPS + Cellular Apple Watch |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone nearby | Uses the iPhone’s connection for supported features. | Can use the iPhone’s connection; cellular service is also available when configured. |
| iPhone away, Wi-Fi available | Can use Wi-Fi for data and supported connected features. | Can use Wi-Fi or, with an active plan and coverage, cellular. |
| No iPhone or Wi-Fi | Offline functions such as workout tracking, time, alarms, timers, and stopwatch remain available. It does not have its own cellular connection. | Can use cellular for supported connected features when the plan, network coverage, model, and settings allow it. |
Apple notes that available features vary by model and region. A cellular model does not mean every app or notification works independently of the iPhone in every situation.

GPS-only is a sensible choice if you carry your iPhone on runs, errands, or commutes, or if you are usually within reach of a reliable Wi-Fi network when the phone is elsewhere. Away from the iPhone, the watch can use Wi-Fi for data; without either Wi-Fi or the iPhone, it can still handle offline activities such as recording a workout and showing the time.
#1 Best Overall
- Stay connected to family and friends with calls, texts, and email, and stream music, podcasts, and audiobooks on the go, even when you don’t have your phone
- Always-on Retina display has nearly 20% more screen area than Series 6, making everything easier to see and use than ever before
- The most crack-resistant front crystal yet on an Apple Watch, IP6X dust resistance, and swimproof design just to name a few awesome features
- Take an anytime, anywhere - Get high and low heart rate, and irregular heart rhythm notifications - Measure your blood oxygen with a powerful sensor and app
- Track your daily activity on Apple Watch, and see your trends in the Fitness app - Stay in the moment with the new Mindfulness app, and reach your sleep goals with the Sleep app
This is not the same as having a standalone mobile connection. If you need calls or other online features in places where you will have neither your iPhone nor Wi-Fi, GPS-only will not provide that connection.
When GPS + Cellular is worth considering
Cellular is most useful when you deliberately leave your iPhone behind but still want to be reachable or use connected features. With a cellular-capable model, an eligible plan, and coverage, Apple says you can make calls, reply to messages, and receive notifications away from the iPhone. Whether the recurring carrier charge is worthwhile depends on how often you use that independence and what your carrier charges.
- You regularly exercise or go out without your iPhone and want the watch to connect over cellular.
- You want a way to call or send messages when away from the phone, while understanding that feature availability depends on connection and setup.
- You are setting up a watch for a family member who does not have their own iPhone and have confirmed the relevant family setup and carrier support.
Cellular connectivity is not a guarantee of service everywhere. Coverage, supported features, and emergency-call availability depend on the location, network, watch model, and configuration.
Does an Apple Watch cellular model need its own plan?
To connect a GPS + Cellular watch to a cellular network, you need an eligible service plan from a carrier that supports the watch. This is a carrier-service decision separate from choosing cellular hardware. Apple says setup can happen while pairing the watch or later in the iPhone’s Watch app. Ordinarily, the iPhone and watch must use the same carrier, and setup takes place within that carrier’s network.
Not every account qualifies: Apple cautions that enterprise or corporate plans, prepaid accounts, and some older accounts may not be supported. The number displayed for the watch may differ for billing or tracking purposes; Apple says the iPhone and watch share the same number.
Support varies by country or region, carrier, account type, and exact watch model. Apple lists supported carriers by region and has multiple regional cellular models, so a watch bought in one region is not guaranteed to work with a carrier elsewhere. Check Apple’s Apple Watch cellular carrier list and ask your carrier to confirm that your exact model and account are eligible, plus the current recurring charge, before buying. No carrier price applies universally.
What “without your iPhone” actually means
Being away from the iPhone does not necessarily mean being offline. A watch can connect through Wi-Fi, and a cellular model with service can connect through a mobile network. But Apple documents an important dependency: SMS, MMS, and third-party push notifications on a cellular watch still require the paired iPhone to be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular, even though it does not need to be nearby.

Apple Watch For Your Kids (formerly Family Setup) lets a family member without their own iPhone use certain watch features, including calls, messages, and location sharing. It uses the family organizer’s iPhone and Family Sharing, and cellular network use requires a cellular-capable watch.
Apple distinguishes setup from cellular service: a cellular plan is not required merely to set up the family watch, but a plan is required to connect it to a cellular network and is necessary for some features. Availability depends on country and carrier. In this setup, international roaming is unavailable, and several health features—including ECG, sleep, and blood oxygen—are not available. Check Apple’s carrier and feature information before choosing a watch for a family member.
Cellular use and battery life
Apple warns that “Turning on cellular for extended periods uses more battery power.” The actual effect is not a fixed percentage: it varies with the watch configuration, network, signal strength, and use. Apple’s battery figures come from controlled tests with model-specific methods and connection schedules, and Apple says actual results vary. For example, its 2025 Series 11 all-day test lasted 24 hours and included six hours of sleep tracking; the cellular configuration included four hours of cellular connection. That is a test result, not a promise of typical daily battery life.

Can you rely on Apple Watch for emergencies?
Do not treat cellular hardware as a guarantee that an emergency call will connect. Apple says Emergency SOS requires satellite, cellular, or Wi-Fi calling with an internet connection from the watch or a nearby iPhone. Some networks may not accept emergency calls from watches that are unactivated, incompatible, not configured for that network, or unsupported for emergency calling over IMS. For the non-cellular watch SOS use Apple describes, the iPhone needs to be nearby.
Apple says Series 5 and later GPS + Cellular, SE and later GPS + Cellular, and Ultra models can call local emergency services in other countries or regions. However, location sharing or messages to emergency contacts may not work abroad, and availability varies by location. Cellular also cannot create coverage in a remote area with no usable network. See Apple’s Emergency SOS information for Apple Watch for the conditions and limitations.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose GPS if your iPhone is usually with you or dependable Wi-Fi covers the times it is not.
- Consider GPS + Cellular if you often leave your iPhone behind and want supported connected features over a mobile network.
- Before paying for cellular, verify the exact model, carrier and account eligibility, coverage where you will use it, and the current recurring charge.
- For family use, confirm Apple Watch For Your Kids availability and the features supported by your carrier and country.
