You can get CGM readings and alerts on some smartwatches, but the setup depends on the CGM and connection mode. With Dexcom G7, start in the phone app at Connections > Direct to Watch. With phone-relayed smartwatch use, the phone must stay nearby. In either case, confirm the supported phone, watch, operating-system versions, and region, then verify that alerts reach the devices you expect.
Before you begin: confirm compatibility and finish phone setup
These instructions use Dexcom G7 as a documented example; they are not a universal recipe for every CGM. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility and support information for your exact phone, watch, operating-system version, and region. Dexcom’s Direct to Watch FAQ and user guide describe its supported setup and limitations.

Complete the initial G7 phone-app and sensor setup first. Dexcom’s G7 app setup guide covers account creation, applying the sensor and overpatch, entering the pairing code, sensor warmup, and alert customization.
Set up Dexcom G7 Direct to Watch
- Start pairing in the phone app. Open Dexcom G7 and go to Connections > Direct to Watch, then follow the on-screen prompts.
- Install the watch app if needed. On the phone, open the Watch app, go to My Watch, find Dexcom G7 under available apps, and install it if it is not already on the watch.
- Allow alerts through the phone and watch settings. Keep Mirror iPhone Alerts enabled for G7, and allow Dexcom notifications during Focus. Alert routing depends on these settings; a watch connection does not prove that every intended device is receiving alerts.
- Sync changes to the watch. Whenever you change CGM settings on the phone, open and display the watch app while the phone is nearby so the settings can copy across.
- Pair each new sensor when prompted. Follow the phone app’s prompt to pair the new G7 sensor with the watch. Dexcom says one sensor can be paired with only one smartwatch at a time.
- Check where alerts arrive. Verify delivery on the phone, watch, or both according to your needs and the manufacturer’s instructions. Dexcom advises allowing notifications to both devices.
Know whether readings come directly from the sensor or through the phone

Direct-to-watch availability depends on the supported watch, phone, and region. Dexcom’s guide also says Share is not available on the smartwatch; its Direct to Watch FAQ specifies Wi-Fi for Share/Follow use with a compatible Apple Watch. Check the current manufacturer instructions for the exact conditions.

Abbott Libre smartwatch alerts work differently
Abbott says its Libre smartwatch app can display readings, trend graphs, and glucose alarm notifications on supported devices. The notifications mirror those from the Libre phone app, and the smartphone must be within range of both the sensor and the watch. The appropriate smartphone settings also need to be enabled. Use Abbott’s Libre watch app FAQ and compatibility/support information to check your particular device and OS.
Abbott explicitly says the Libre smartwatch app should not be used to make treatment decisions. Follow the smartphone Libre app’s instructions instead.

Keep the CGM app current and treat missing data seriously
On July 24, 2025, the FDA issued a correction notice covering Dexcom G7 Android, iOS, and watchOS versions 2.8.0 or earlier, and Dexcom ONE+ Android/iOS versions 1.4.0 or earlier. The FDA said a software error could omit a “Sensor Failed” alert after a transmitter hardware or firmware failure, stop glucose reporting, and leave users unaware that data was missing. The notice said affected versions would no longer be usable after August 20, 2025, and advised users to update. See the FDA correction notice and check for current manufacturer or regulator notices.

A generic smartwatch notification is not a substitute for the CGM app, receiver, or manufacturer care instructions. Confirm that the intended devices receive alerts and follow the CGM app’s instructions for treatment decisions.
