The Apple TV app is the software hub where you browse that subscription alongside channels, rentals, purchases, and your Library. Apple TV 4K is optional hardware; you can use the app on many smart TVs, streaming devices, Apple devices, Windows PCs, Android devices, and gaming or living-room devices without buying an Apple TV 4K box.
Apple TV and Apple TV+ are the same subscription service
Apple renamed Apple TV+ to Apple TV. If you see “Apple TV” in current Apple documentation, it refers to the subscription streaming service, not automatically to the app or the Apple TV 4K device.

The subscription centers on Apple’s original television series, films, and documentaries. Depending on your country or region, it can also include specified sports, such as Major League Soccer (MLS), Friday Night Baseball doubleheaders, and Formula 1 in the United States. The sports lineup and other available content are not universal, so the catalog shown on your account may differ from someone else’s in another country.
Older conversations, account pages, or search results may still say “Apple TV+.” That name describes the same subscription rather than a separate plan. You do not need to subscribe twice because the branding changed.

The Apple TV app is a storefront and viewing hub
Apple describes the Apple TV app as the home for everything you want to watch. It is an application, not a second streaming subscription by itself. The app brings several types of content into one interface:
- The Apple TV subscription catalog.
- Separate channel subscriptions that you choose and pay for individually.
- Movies and shows available to rent or buy one title at a time.
- Your Library of eligible purchases and other content associated with your Apple Account.
- Recommendations and listings that may include titles you do not currently own or subscribe to.
Exactly which tabs, stores, purchase controls, and recommendations appear depends on the device, operating system, country, and region. The app is therefore broader than the Apple TV subscription: it can display a title even when that title is not part of your subscription.
Apple TV vs. the Apple TV app at a glance
| Question | Apple TV subscription | Apple TV app |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A recurring streaming service, formerly called Apple TV+. | An application and storefront used to find and play content. |
| Main content | Apple Originals and, where offered, specified sports. | Apple TV content plus channels, rentals, purchases, Library items, and recommendations. |
| How you pay | A recurring subscription charge. | May process the Apple TV subscription, separate channel subscriptions, and one-off rentals or purchases. |
| Does every title in the app come with the subscription? | No. The subscription covers its own catalog only. | No. Listings can require another subscription, a rental fee, or a purchase. |
| Hardware required | No dedicated box is required. | Runs on supported Apple devices, Windows, Android, smart TVs, streaming devices, and gaming or living-room devices. |
| Regional availability | Catalog and sports vary by country or region. | Features, transactions, and available content also vary by country, region, and device. |
What an Apple TV subscription includes—and what it does not
An Apple TV subscription grants access to the Apple TV catalog identified as included for your account. It does not turn the entire Apple TV app into an all-you-can-watch library.

- Apple Originals made available in your country or region.
- Films, series, and documentaries that Apple marks as part of the Apple TV subscription.
- Specified sports offered in your market, such as MLS, Friday Night Baseball doubleheaders, or Formula 1 in the United States, when those events are available under the applicable local offering.
Not automatically included
- Third-party branded subscription services offered through the app.
- Titles listed only for rental.
- Titles listed only for purchase.
- Content whose rights are unavailable in your country, region, or device.
Apple’s support guidance specifically says that the Apple TV subscription does not include third-party branded subscription services or content available for rental or purchase in the Apple TV app. A tile appearing in search or recommendations is therefore not proof that you can play it at no additional cost.
Why the app shows programs you cannot watch with your subscription
The app combines discovery and transactions. Its job is to help you find content, not to show only the items covered by one payment. A search result can lead to several different access methods.

Read the title’s access label
Open the title page and look for the wording attached to the play button or price. The label should indicate whether the title is included with Apple TV, tied to a channel, available to rent, or available to buy. If a price is shown, the title is not being supplied by your Apple TV subscription at no extra charge.
Check which account and service you are using
Make sure the device is signed in with the Apple Account that holds your subscription. A family member’s purchase, a different account, or a channel subscription billed through another provider can produce a title listing without granting access on the account currently in use.

Licensing is country- and region-specific. A title included for a viewer in one market may be absent, rental-only, or unavailable in another. The app can also expose fewer purchase features on some smart TVs and streaming devices than it does on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, or other supported device.
Do you need an Apple TV 4K box?
No. Apple TV 4K is a dedicated living-room streaming device, but it is optional. You can watch through the Apple TV app on a compatible smart TV or streaming device, or on supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, Android, gaming, and other living-room devices.
When the dedicated box can make sense
- You want a separate, Apple-managed interface rather than the built-in software on your television.
- Your existing television does not support the Apple TV app.
- You want one living-room device that runs the app alongside other streaming services.
- You need the features provided by a particular Apple TV 4K model and your television does not offer an equivalent capability.
When it is unnecessary
- Your smart TV already has the Apple TV app and plays it reliably.
- You primarily watch on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, Android device, or another supported streaming device.
- You are considering Apple TV 4K only because you believe it is required for the subscription.
Buying the box does not expand the Apple TV subscription into third-party channels or make rental and purchase titles free. It changes the hardware you use to access the app.

Where the Apple TV app works
Apple documents the app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, Android, smart TVs, streaming devices, gaming or living-room devices, and Apple TV 4K. Compatibility is not identical across every model.

| Mac | Use the Apple TV app provided for the supported macOS environment and check that your account is the one that made the subscription or purchase. |
| Windows PC | Use Apple’s supported Windows implementation; available features can differ from those on Apple hardware. |

| Smart TV | Confirm that your exact television model supports the app. Some models cannot complete subscriptions, rentals, or purchases inside the app. |
| Streaming, gaming, or other living-room device | Check support for the specific model, region, and app version before assuming every feature is present. |
| Apple TV 4K | The dedicated Apple hardware runs the app and is one of the supported living-room options. |
Apple cautions that not all features or content are available in every country, region, or device. A device may let you watch an existing subscription while withholding in-app purchasing, for example.
How to start watching the Apple TV subscription
- Choose a supported device. Install or open the Apple TV app on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, Android device, smart TV, streaming device, gaming device, or Apple TV 4K.
- Sign in with the correct Apple Account. Use the account that should own the subscription and any associated purchases. If you switch accounts, the app may show different Library items and access rights.
- Open the Apple TV section. Browse or search for a series, film, documentary, or available sporting event.
- Inspect the access wording. Confirm that the title is marked as included with Apple TV rather than tied to a channel, rental, or purchase.
- Subscribe if needed. If you are not subscribed, follow the on-screen subscription flow on a device that supports the transaction. If the television or streaming device does not allow sign-up, subscribe on another supported device and then sign in with the same Apple Account on the TV.
- Play the title. Once the account and access label match, start playback from the title page.
The exact button names and navigation order vary by device and region, so do not assume that a missing purchase button means the title itself is unavailable.
How channels, rentals, purchases, and the Library differ
Channels
Channels are separate subscriptions presented inside the Apple TV app. They have their own branding, billing relationship, catalog, and cancellation terms. Paying for Apple TV does not automatically subscribe you to every channel shown in the app.
Rentals
A rental is a one-off transaction for a specific title. It is distinct from the recurring Apple TV subscription and will be marked as a rental option when available.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Purchases
A purchase is another one-off transaction. Purchased items are associated with the Apple Account used for the transaction and can appear in the app’s Library on supported devices.
Library
The Library is where the app organizes eligible purchases and other account-associated content. Finding an item in your Library does not mean it is part of the Apple TV subscription; it may be there because you bought it separately.
Regional and device limits to expect
Two people can use the same app and see different choices for legitimate reasons. Apple identifies country, region, and device as factors that affect availability.
- Country or region: Sports rights, series, films, channels, and transactions depend on local licensing and Apple’s offering in that market.
- Device model: Older televisions or streaming hardware may not support the current app or all of its features.
- Transaction support: Some smart TVs and streaming devices cannot complete subscriptions, rentals, or purchases in the app. Use another supported device for the transaction, then sign in on the original device.
- Feature differences: A device may support playback but not every store, Library, recommendation, or account-management function.
These differences are normal and do not by themselves indicate that your subscription has failed.
Troubleshooting common Apple TV and app confusion
“I subscribed, but the TV still asks me to subscribe”
- Check the Apple Account shown in the app on the TV.
- Sign out and sign back in with the account that completed the subscription.
- Open a title that is clearly labeled as included with Apple TV rather than a rental or channel item.
- If the TV cannot process transactions, complete the subscription on another supported device and return to the TV using the same account.
“The show has a play button, but I am charged to watch it”
Look again at the title’s label. A play or watch control can lead to a channel subscription, rental, or purchase. The charge indicates that the title is outside the Apple TV subscription under the account and region you are using.

“A movie is missing from my Library”
Verify that you are signed in with the Apple Account used for the purchase. Then check whether the device supports the relevant Library and transaction features. A listing in search is not the same as an item owned by your account.
“Sports coverage differs from what a friend sees”
Sports availability is market-specific. MLS, Friday Night Baseball, and Formula 1 in the United States are examples of specified offerings, not a promise that every event is available in every country or region.
“The app is available, but I cannot buy anything”
That can be a device limitation rather than an account problem. Apple notes that some smart TVs and streaming devices do not support completing purchases in the app. Use an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, Android device, or another supported option for the transaction, then sign in on the original device.

Which option should you choose?
| Your situation | What you need |
|---|---|
| You want Apple Originals and the Apple sports offerings available in your market. | An Apple TV subscription and a supported device running the app. |
| You want to browse many providers from one interface. | The Apple TV app, plus separate subscriptions or transactions for the channels and titles you choose. |
| You already own a compatible smart TV. | Install or open the Apple TV app; Apple TV 4K is optional. |
| Your television lacks the app or has limited support. | Use a supported streaming device or Apple TV 4K, or watch on a supported computer or mobile device. |
| You want a specific movie shown with a price. | Rent or buy it separately; the Apple TV subscription does not cover that transaction. |
| You want a channel displayed inside the app. | Subscribe to that channel separately if it is offered in your region. |
Common naming mistakes to avoid
- “Apple TV” always means the box: It can mean the renamed streaming service, the app, or Apple TV 4K hardware. Use the surrounding wording to identify which one is meant.
- “Apple TV+ is a different plan”: Apple TV+ was renamed Apple TV; it is not an additional subscription.
- “Everything in the app is included”: The app is also a storefront for channels, rentals, and purchases.
- “Apple TV 4K is required”: The app runs on many supported devices, including compatible smart TVs and streaming hardware.
- “The same catalog appears everywhere”: Country, region, device, and feature support can change what you see and what you can buy.
The practical distinction
Think of Apple TV as the subscription you pay for, the Apple TV app as the place where you find and manage viewing options, and Apple TV 4K as one optional device for running that app on a television. When a title appears in the app, read its access label before pressing play: it may be included with Apple TV, tied to a separate channel, or offered only as a rental or purchase.
