Apple TV+ has not run out of good television; it has a positioning problem. Apple sells a $14.99-a-month U.S. service built around hundreds of originals, then adds baseball, soccer and Formula 1. Yet the best available outside estimates put its subscriber base at about 25 million and its annual losses at roughly $1 billion. Those figures are not Apple-audited disclosures, but they explain why the service can feel both prestigious and oddly easy to ignore.
The fairest verdict is conditional. If Apple TV+ is judged as a standalone Netflix-style business, it has struggled to create scale, retention and a deep everyday catalog. If it is judged as part of Apple’s wider services, sports, device and living-room strategy, the apparent lack of immediate profit may be an intentional trade-off. Your own answer to “Is Apple TV worth it?” depends on which of those jobs you expect it to perform.

What Apple TV+ actually includes
Apple’s U.S. service costs $14.99 per month after a seven-day trial. It offers hundreds of Apple Originals and releases episodes on a continuing schedule rather than dropping every season at once. The subscription also includes Friday Night Baseball, and Apple lists Major League Soccer and, from 2026, Formula 1 in the United States as major parts of the service.

You can watch through the Apple TV app on Apple devices, smart televisions, streaming devices, game consoles, Android, Windows and the web. You therefore do not need an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV box to subscribe. Availability, sports rights and pricing outside the United States vary by country.
| Service detail | What is established |
|---|---|
| U.S. price | $14.99 monthly after a seven-day trial |
| Programming model | Hundreds of Apple Originals, with weekly releases and returning seasons |
| Live programming | Friday Night Baseball, every MLS match listed by Apple, and U.S. Formula 1 from 2026 |
| Where it works | Apple devices, smart TVs, streaming devices, consoles, Android, Windows and the web |
| What is not included | Third-party subscriptions, rentals and purchases inside the Apple TV app |
At the listed monthly rate, keeping an individual subscription for twelve months would cost $179.88 before taxes. Apple One bundles and temporary promotions can change the effective cost, so check the offer attached to your Apple Account rather than assuming the standalone price applies.
Why people say Apple TV+ has lost its way
A small audience for an expensive-looking service
Associated Press reported an estimated 25 million subscribers in 2024, which placed Apple TV+ eighth among streaming services at that time. It is an estimate, not an audited total published by Apple. Even with that qualification, it indicates a service with far less household penetration than the biggest general-purpose platforms.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scale matters beyond bragging rights. A large service can spread production, marketing and technology costs across more paying accounts, keep a bigger library in front of viewers and use recommendation data to move people from one show to the next. A smaller service must make each new series work harder.
Reported losses make the strategy look harder to defend
Axios reported in 2025 that The Information estimated Apple TV+ was losing $1 billion annually. Apple does not report standalone profit and loss figures for each service, so that number is not company-confirmed. It is nevertheless a useful explanation for the criticism: a premium subscription with a relatively small estimated audience can require substantial spending on originals, rights, marketing and technology before it reaches break-even.
Apple’s corporate results combine services and do not provide a separately audited Apple TV+ income statement in the cited disclosures. Anyone presenting the $1 billion figure as a precise Apple result is overstating what is known.

Great shows do not automatically create a habit
University of Maryland professor Bo “Bobby” Zhou described the central contradiction this way: “Apple TV+ never really truly took off, even though they do have a series of really high-quality TV shows.” Critical acclaim can start a subscription, but it does not guarantee that a household keeps paying during the weeks between finales.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Apple’s free-weekend promotion was presented as a way to let people sample the catalog. That tactic solves discovery but can also underline the retention problem: viewers may watch one heavily promoted series, then cancel until another arrives.
Carnegie Mellon professor Michael D. Smith compared the acquisition logic to a mall with an anchor tenant: “It’s kind of like a mall, right? I’ve got an anchor tenant. For me, it’s ‘Ted Lasso.’ That gets me to the mall. And once I’m at the mall, I’m going to wander around and discover some other stuff there.” The analogy identifies Apple’s challenge precisely. A signature hit can attract visitors; the business still needs enough other stores to make the visit—and the next month—worthwhile.
The case that Apple has a plan
Apple’s own indicators point in a different direction. The company said Apple TV eclipsed all prior viewership records in December 2025. That is a company-reported engagement claim rather than an independently audited subscriber count, but it suggests that usage can surge when the programming mix and promotion align.
The service is also becoming less dependent on scripted premieres. Apple lists a five-year agreement under which every Formula 1 race is exclusive to Apple TV in the United States. Alongside Friday Night Baseball and every Major League Soccer match listed on its U.S. service page, those rights create recurring reasons to open the app. A weekly or seasonal appointment can keep a subscription active in a way that a ten-episode drama cannot.

This is the ecosystem argument: Apple may value television for more than subscription profit. A sports fan can watch on an iPhone, continue on a television, use an Apple device as the controller and encounter other Apple services along the way. Apple can also use popular video to make its hardware and bundles more attractive. Because Apple does not publish a standalone Apple TV+ income statement, outsiders cannot calculate how much of the investment is being justified by those indirect benefits.

Is Apple TV+ worth $14.99 a month?
Use the following decision framework instead of judging the service by awards or a single viral show.
| If you are this viewer | The price makes sense when… | Watch out for… |
|---|---|---|
| A dedicated Apple TV+ fan | You have several current or returning series to watch and use the service most weeks. | Paying continuously during long gaps between seasons. |
| A sports viewer | MLB, MLS or U.S. Formula 1 is part of your regular viewing calendar. | Territory limits, local blackouts and rights that differ outside the United States. |
| A sampler | You start the seven-day trial or a promotion with a specific watch list and cancel before an unwanted renewal. | Forgetting the renewal date or assuming the app’s other titles are included. |
| A household replacing several apps | You prefer a focused original catalog and are willing to rotate services rather than keep every subscription. | Apple TV+ has a shallower licensed back catalog than broad library services. |
| A casual, background-TV household | You value a smaller, curated selection and do not need a huge archive of older movies and shows. | Fewer familiar reruns and less channel-like browsing. |
A practical approach is to subscribe around a specific run of shows or a sports season, make a watch list before starting the trial, and reassess when that list is finished. That is not a criticism of the programming; it is a response to the service’s concentrated release pattern.
Does Apple TV+ have enough to keep you subscribed all year?
It can, but not for the same reason that a broad library service can. Apple emphasizes originals, so its catalog is designed around distinctive first-run series, films and specials rather than decades of licensed television. Weekly releases extend the life of a show and give viewers a reason to return, while returning seasons add continuity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe weakness is the space between marquee releases. A household that wants endless older sitcoms, a large movie archive or a channel-like stream may find the selection narrow after finishing its priority shows. Apple’s sports schedule partially fills that gap, but only if those leagues matter to you.
Compare services on four practical questions:
- Catalog depth: Are you looking for Apple Originals or a large licensed back catalog?
- Cadence: Will weekly episodes, returning seasons or live games give you a reason to open the app every week?
- Bundle economics: Does an Apple One or another promotion change what the subscription costs you in practice?
- Platform reach: Can everyone in your household watch on the televisions, phones and computers they actually use?
Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Max and Peacock each make different trade-offs on those axes. Avoid comparing only the number of shows on a home screen; a large catalog is not useful if it does not contain what your household watches.
Is Apple TV becoming a sports service?
Sports are now a structural part of Apple’s television strategy, not a side note. Friday Night Baseball provides a recurring weekly window. Major League Soccer gives Apple a league-wide proposition, and the announced U.S. Formula 1 agreement supplies a high-profile calendar of live events.

The value depends heavily on geography. Rights are territory-specific, games can be subject to blackouts, and the exact package available in one country should not be assumed to apply in another. Formula 1’s cited exclusivity is for the United States; it does not establish the same arrangement worldwide.
Sports also changes the retention equation. A drama can be delayed for a weekend; a live race or match happens at a fixed time. That urgency can turn Apple TV+ from an occasional entertainment subscription into a service some viewers keep active throughout a season. For non-sports households, the rights spend may feel irrelevant rather than valuable.

Apple announced the Apple TV 4K (4th generation) on October 13, 2026. The U.S. price is $299, with retail availability announced for November 13, 2026. It is more than a faster streaming box: Apple is positioning it as a living-room interface and smart-home hub.
| Hardware feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| A19 chip | Provides the processing platform for the updated interface and Siri AI features. |
| Dedicated AV1 decoder | Supports hardware decoding of AV1 video, subject to app and content support. |
| Three far-field microphones | Enable hands-free voice interaction from across the room. |
| Siri AI discovery | Apple describes a full-screen conversational way to find something to watch. |
| Four-speaker HomePod surround support | Extends the Apple living-room audio setup for compatible HomePod speakers. |
| Smart-home hub features | Lets the box participate in Apple’s connected-home control strategy. |
Apple vice president Bob Borchers said, “With Siri AI, finding something to watch becomes a full-screen, conversational experience, and with built-in far-field microphones, it’s completely hands-free.” That promise is about reducing the friction of choosing content, one of Apple TV+’s discovery problems.
Should you buy the box or use your television’s apps?
Use your smart TV’s built-in Apple TV app if it is responsive, supports the services your household uses and you do not need Apple’s gaming, audio or smart-home features. The $299 hardware is difficult to justify solely as a way to play a $14.99 subscription that already works on many televisions and other devices.

The dedicated box becomes easier to justify when you want a consistent interface across rooms, hands-free Siri discovery, the A19 platform, AV1 decoding, HomePod surround support or a central smart-home hub. Check your television, sound system and HomePod configuration first; a feature only helps if the rest of your equipment can use it.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing the app with the subscription
Look for the Apple TV+ subscription specifically. A title displayed in the Apple TV app may be a rental, purchase or third-party channel program. If playback asks for another subscription, that is not necessarily an error.
Assuming sports rights travel with you
Confirm the package for your country and check blackout rules before subscribing for a particular team or league. Apple’s U.S. Formula 1 announcement does not establish worldwide exclusivity.
Treating estimates as Apple’s official accounts
The 25 million subscriber estimate and the reported $1 billion annual loss are useful context, not audited Apple figures. Apple does not disclose standalone subscriber, content-spend or profit numbers for Apple TV+ in the cited materials.
Recommended Free Tools
Buying new hardware to solve a catalog problem
The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K can improve discovery and integration, but it does not add shows that your existing television cannot play. Decide first whether your problem is content, interface speed, audio, voice control or smart-home capability.
So, has Apple TV+ lost the plot?
As a pure streaming business, Apple TV+ has not yet demonstrated the scale or transparent profitability that would make its strategy obvious. The reported subscriber and loss estimates, combined with the need for free sampling and anchor hits, support that criticism.
As an Apple ecosystem project, however, the plot is clearer: premium originals attract attention, live sports create scheduled usage, the app reaches non-Apple hardware, and Apple’s living-room devices make the television experience part of a wider platform. The service’s success therefore depends on the metric. Viewers should pay $14.99 when the current shows or sports justify regular use—not because Apple’s hardware investment guarantees that every month will feel equally full.
