What “Blu-ray-quality Dolby Atmos” means
Atmos is an object-based layer that describes where sounds should be placed above and around you. The layer can be carried by different base codecs. Commercial streaming services commonly deliver Atmos inside Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3), a compressed format designed for internet bandwidth. A Blu-ray disc or a full-quality remux commonly carries Atmos inside Dolby TrueHD, a lossless codec.
Both formats can display an “Atmos” indicator on an AVR, but they are not the same source quality. TrueHD preserves the lossless soundtrack from the disc; Digital Plus uses a lower data rate. If your question is specifically whether a player can send the original TrueHD bitstream to your receiver, passthrough support matters more than the Atmos badge.

Why the SHIELD TV Pro is the choice for Blu-ray remuxes
Explicit TrueHD and surround passthrough
NVIDIA’s product specification lists “Dolby TrueHD (pass-through),” “DTS-X (pass-through)” and “DTS-HD (pass-through).” The SHIELD user guide likewise says the device supports Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X and DTS Core Audio streams over HDMI. That is the critical distinction for a remux containing the original disc audio: the player can send the encoded stream to an AVR or soundbar that performs the decoding.
Passthrough is not decoding. The SHIELD does not turn a receiver that lacks TrueHD or DTS:X support into a compatible one. Your AVR or soundbar must accept the codec, and your playback application must be configured to send the original bitstream rather than transcode it.
Designed around local media
NVIDIA specifically lists Plex support, two USB 3.0 ports and expandable storage for SHIELD TV Pro. That combination suits a library stored on a network server, USB drive or other local-media setup. It also gives you a practical route for large remux files that would be impractical to stream from an online service.

Use a player that can read the container and audio track in your files. In its audio settings, select passthrough or bitstream output when available, and disable options that convert every track to stereo or a generic PCM stream. The exact labels differ between applications, so verify the app’s own audio-output setting rather than relying only on the SHIELD’s system menu.

Video and storage specifications
NVIDIA’s 2026 specification lists 4K HDR playback up to 60 fps, Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10, 16 GB of internal storage, and 24-bit/192 kHz high-resolution playback over HDMI and USB. Those are product specifications, not independent laboratory measurements. Internal storage is primarily for applications and system data; a substantial remux library normally belongs on network or attached storage.
What Apple TV 4K does better
Streaming-first operation
Apple lists Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 and Dolby Atmos for Apple TV 4K, with Atmos playback dependent on compatible content and compatible home-theater equipment. This is the natural fit when most of your viewing comes from streaming applications rather than locally stored disc images.
Apple’s support guidance says Apple TV 4K automatically plays the highest-quality sound supported by your home-entertainment setup and available with the content you watch. In practice, the service, title, account tier, region and device chain all matter: a title without an Atmos track cannot produce Atmos, and a receiver that cannot decode the delivered format cannot display it.

Broader HDR-format list
Apple’s specification lists Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. If your television makes use of HDR10+ or HLG content, those formats are part of Apple’s stated compatibility list. SHIELD TV Pro’s cited list includes Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10, but not HDR10+ or HLG.

Apple ecosystem integration
Apple TV 4K is the more straightforward choice for a household already using Apple services and devices, or one that wants a primarily app-based interface. HomePod and other Apple ecosystem features can be decisive for that audience, even though they do not change the codec distinction between streaming Atmos and TrueHD Atmos.
HDMI wiring determines whether Atmos reaches the system
Recommended SHIELD connection
NVIDIA recommends the chain SHIELD TV Pro → Atmos-capable AVR → TV. The AVR receives the original audio bitstream, decodes it and sends video to the television. This arrangement avoids asking the television’s audio-return link to carry formats it may not support.
Recommended Apple TV 4K connection
Apple advises connecting Apple TV 4K directly to an Atmos-capable AVR or soundbar when required by the system. Apple also states that Apple TV 4K uses a high-bandwidth form of Dolby Atmos that does not work over ARC connections. If the television is between the Apple TV and the receiver, ARC can therefore prevent the expected Atmos signal from reaching the audio system.
Use an eARC-capable television and audio device only when every component and the particular content path support the required format; otherwise, connect the streamer directly to the AVR or soundbar. Select the HDMI input on the AVR that is connected to the player, and make sure the receiver’s HDMI audio mode is set to receive bitstream or the highest-quality input rather than forced stereo.

Set up SHIELD TV Pro for a local TrueHD Atmos file
- Confirm the decoder chain. Check the AVR or soundbar specifications for Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos over HDMI. Also confirm that the television and AVR support the video resolution and HDR mode you plan to use.
- Wire the system in the recommended order. Connect SHIELD TV Pro to an HDMI input on the AVR, then connect the AVR’s HDMI output to the TV. Use cables and ports rated for your chosen 4K HDR mode.
- Install or open your local-media player. Plex is one application NVIDIA lists for SHIELD. Point it to the server, USB drive or network share containing the remux.
- Enable original-audio output. In the player’s audio settings, choose passthrough, bitstream or the equivalent option. Avoid “stereo only,” forced PCM, or a setting that transcodes every unsupported track.
- Play a file whose audio track is known. Inspect the media information and select the Dolby TrueHD/Atmos track rather than a commentary, stereo or compatibility track.
- Verify the receiver display. The AVR should identify the incoming format as Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos or an equivalent combination. If it reports PCM or Dolby Digital Plus, the player may be decoding or transcoding instead of passing through the original track.
Set up Apple TV 4K for streaming Atmos
- Check the content and account. Use a title and service that actually offers an Atmos track in your region and subscription. The Atmos label is conditional on that availability.
- Connect for sufficient bandwidth. For the most reliable result, connect Apple TV 4K directly to an Atmos-capable AVR or soundbar, then connect that device to the TV. Do not assume ARC will carry Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos form.
- Enable Atmos in the home-theater chain. Turn on the AVR or soundbar’s Dolby processing and use the HDMI input connected to Apple TV 4K. If the television is involved, enable its appropriate eARC setting only when the equipment supports it.
- Play a confirmed Atmos title. Apple TV 4K automatically selects the highest quality supported by the system and the content. Allow the title to start before checking the receiver’s information screen.
- Check what was actually received. The receiver may show Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus/Atmos or another format depending on the service and title. A non-Atmos title will not become Atmos through a menu setting.
Which player fits common home-theater scenarios?
You have a Plex library of full Blu-ray remuxes
Choose SHIELD TV Pro. Its documented TrueHD passthrough and local-media features directly address the requirement. Use an AVR or soundbar that can decode TrueHD, and keep the SHIELD-to-AVR-to-TV wiring.
You watch Netflix-style streaming services almost exclusively
Choose Apple TV 4K when its app availability, interface or Apple integration suits you. Streaming Atmos is supported for compatible content, and Apple’s HDR list includes Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG.
You need DTS-HD or DTS:X from local files
SHIELD TV Pro is the documented option in this comparison because NVIDIA explicitly lists DTS-HD and DTS:X passthrough. Apple’s cited specifications do not make the same passthrough claim.

Your television supports HDR10+ or HLG
Apple TV 4K has those formats in Apple’s published list. SHIELD TV Pro’s cited list covers Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10, so check the exact HDR format of your library before choosing it solely for video compatibility.

Your receiver is older or has limited HDMI inputs
Identify which codecs and video formats the receiver accepts before buying either streamer. If it cannot decode TrueHD, SHIELD passthrough cannot provide lossless Atmos decoding. If it cannot accept the required 4K HDR signal, route video and audio according to the manufacturer’s supported alternatives, understanding that ARC may impose additional audio limits.
Troubleshooting missing Atmos or unexpected audio
The AVR shows Dolby Digital Plus instead of TrueHD
- Confirm that the file contains a Dolby TrueHD/Atmos track, not only a compressed compatibility track.
- Check the media player’s passthrough or bitstream setting.
- Make sure SHIELD is connected to an AVR or soundbar that accepts TrueHD, rather than relying on a TV’s ARC output.
- Check that the AVR input is not configured to force PCM, stereo or another conversion mode.
The AVR shows PCM
- Look for a player option that decodes audio internally instead of passing the bitstream.
- Verify that HDMI audio is enabled and that the correct output device is selected.
- Test another known TrueHD file to separate a file-specific issue from a system setting.
Apple TV 4K does not trigger Atmos
