Apple TV 4K is a dedicated streaming and home-theater box, not a television and not a subscription. The box runs tvOS, connects to your display and network, plays compatible 4K/HDR video and multichannel audio, and provides apps, profiles, AirPlay, Home controls and Siri search. The current specification uses an A15 Bionic chip and comes in a 64GB Wi‑Fi configuration or a 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet configuration.
You supply a compatible HDMI cable, a 4K/HDR television or projector when you want those formats, and subscriptions or purchases for services you choose. The included Siri Remote handles navigation and playback, and can also control a compatible television or receiver.

What Apple TV 4K is—and what it is not
Apple TV 4K is a small computer for television use. Its hardware decodes video and audio, connects to your home network, and sends the result through HDMI to a television, monitor, projector or audio-video receiver. tvOS is the software that presents the menus, runs apps, manages accounts and profiles, and connects the box to other Apple devices and supported smart-home equipment.

Current Apple TV 4K hardware
Apple’s current specification lists the A15 Bionic chip in both configurations. Storage is used for apps and local system data; it is not a measure of how many hours of streaming you can watch, because most streaming video is delivered over the network rather than permanently stored on the box.
| Configuration | Storage | Network connections | Thread networking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi model | 64GB | Wi‑Fi 6 (802.11ax), 2×2 MIMO | Not included in Apple’s listed specification |
| Wi‑Fi + Ethernet model | 128GB | Wi‑Fi 6 (802.11ax), 2×2 MIMO, Gigabit Ethernet | Included |
Both versions include HDMI 2.1, Bluetooth 5.0 and the same A15 Bionic platform. The Ethernet version adds a wired network path and Thread networking technology. Ethernet can be useful when the television is far from a wireless access point, when walls interfere with Wi‑Fi, or when you want the most predictable connection for high-bitrate local media. Thread is relevant to compatible smart-home accessories; it does not turn the box into a general-purpose router.
Video formats and display features
Apple TV 4K can output up to 2160p (4K) video, but the visible result depends on the source, the app, the HDMI path and the display. Apple lists these capabilities:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- SDR AVC and HEVC up to 2160p at 60 frames per second.
- Dolby Vision up to 2160p at 60 frames per second.
- HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG using HEVC.
- HDMI Quick Media Switching (QMS).
- Support for 21:9 and other cinematic aspect ratios on compatible projectors and displays.
Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and other HDR labels describe the signal Apple TV 4K can send; they do not guarantee that every title, app or television will use that format. The television or projector must support the format, and the receiver, switch or soundbar in the HDMI chain must pass the required signal. If any link is limited to standard dynamic range, the system negotiates a compatible output instead.
Audio support
The box supports Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 and Dolby Atmos when the content and the rest of the system support them. Apple also lists AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF and WAV playback. A Dolby Atmos logo on the box does not by itself create Atmos sound: the app or title, HDMI connection, receiver or soundbar and speakers all need to support the format.
What tvOS does
tvOS is the operating system and app platform on Apple TV 4K. Think of the hardware as the processor, storage, networking and HDMI output; tvOS is the layer that makes those parts usable.

Home screen, apps and playback
The Home screen organizes installed apps. tvOS handles app navigation, media playback, settings and updates, while apps provide their own catalogs and account systems. Apple’s developer documentation describes support for 4K resolution, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, Siri Remote voice commands and Picture in Picture.
Profiles and parental controls
Profiles let household members keep recommendations and viewing activity separate where an app supports that behavior. Control Center provides quick access to system controls, users and connected devices. Parental-control settings can restrict content and purchases on the Apple TV.
Siri search and playback commands
Pressing the Siri button lets you search by voice instead of typing with the on-screen keyboard. Siri can also issue playback commands such as pausing, resuming or moving through compatible content. Search results and available actions vary by country, region, app and language.
AirPlay and Apple-device input
AirPlay can send supported video, photos or audio from an iPhone, iPad or Mac to the television, and the Apple TV can work with compatible AirPlay speakers. The User Guide also documents using an iPhone or iPad keyboard for text entry and using an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch as a remote.
Home integration and cameras
tvOS can display compatible Home app cameras and trigger scenes. HomePod and other AirPlay speakers can be used with Apple TV for supported audio arrangements. These functions require compatible devices and the appropriate home setup; the Apple TV does not make an incompatible camera or speaker compatible.
Communication, music and spatial audio
The current Apple TV User Guide covers FaceTime, Apple Music Sing, Bluetooth devices and Spatial Audio. Spatial Audio results depend on compatible headphones or speakers and supported content. FaceTime requires compatible camera and Apple-device arrangements rather than a camera built into the Apple TV box.

The User Guide is currently presented for tvOS 27 and says tvOS 27 can be updated on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation). Feature availability can vary by country, region and hardware. Apple’s own wording is that not all features and content are available in all countries or regions or on all Apple TV hardware models.
What the Siri Remote actually controls
The current Siri Remote combines Bluetooth 5.0 with an infrared transmitter and a microphone. Its touch-enabled clickpad supports swiping and clicking, while dedicated buttons cover the common television tasks.
| Remote control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Touch-enabled clickpad | Moves through menus, selects items and supports touch navigation. |
| Siri button and microphone | Accepts voice searches, dictation and compatible playback commands. |
| Back | Returns to the previous screen in supported interfaces. |
| Play/Pause | Starts, pauses or resumes compatible media. |
| Mute and volume | Adjusts or mutes audio on the configured television or receiver. |
| Power and TV/Home | Controls the television or receiver and returns to the Apple TV home interface, depending on configuration. |
Apple says the remote can control a compatible television or receiver through infrared (IR) or HDMI-CEC. IR sends commands directly to the equipment’s sensor; CEC sends control signals over HDMI. CEC behavior differs among manufacturers, so power and volume control may require selecting the correct device or using IR setup in the Apple TV settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe remote has a rechargeable battery designed to provide months of battery life with typical daily use. It charges through USB‑C. A charging cable or power adapter is sold separately, so do not assume the Apple TV box includes every cable needed for charging and installation. If the remote is unavailable, Apple documents pairing and locating it, and you can use an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch as a remote in supported circumstances.
What you need to set up Apple TV 4K
- Use a compatible display. Connect the Apple TV to a television, monitor or projector with an HDMI input. A 4K/HDR television or projector is required to see 4K and HDR output; an older 1080p display can still show compatible lower-resolution output.
- Get the right HDMI cable. Apple requires an HDMI cable, and the cable is sold separately. For 4K/HDR and HDMI 2.1 features, use a cable rated for the signal and length you need. Connect Apple TV directly to the display first when troubleshooting, then add a receiver or switch.
- Choose a network path. Join Wi‑Fi 6 or another compatible Wi‑Fi network, or connect Gigabit Ethernet on the 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet model. Streaming quality depends on the connection and service, not only on the Apple TV hardware.
- Connect power and select the HDMI input. Turn on the display, choose the HDMI input used by Apple TV, and follow the on-screen pairing instructions for the Siri Remote.
- Sign in with an Apple Account when required. Purchases, rentals and Home Sharing require an Apple Account. Individual streaming apps may request separate credentials.
- Check the HDMI chain. If you use an AV receiver, soundbar or HDMI switch, verify that every device and cable supports the desired 4K, HDR and audio formats. A single incompatible component can force a lower video mode or prevent a format from appearing.
Choosing between 64GB Wi‑Fi and 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet
The two configurations share the A15 Bionic chip, HDMI 2.1, Wi‑Fi 6 and Apple’s principal video and audio standards. The decision is therefore about storage headroom, network connection and smart-home capability rather than a different picture-processing system.
| Choose this configuration | It makes sense when |
|---|---|
| 64GB Wi‑Fi | Your router provides a stable wireless connection, you do not need Ethernet at the TV, and your app collection does not require the larger storage tier. |
| 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet | You want Gigabit Ethernet, need a wired connection, expect to install more apps or games, or want Thread networking technology for compatible smart-home accessories. |
Storage capacity does not improve the maximum supported resolution or HDR format. Both configurations use the same A15 Bionic platform and support the same main standards listed by Apple. Before buying, check the capabilities of your television, receiver or soundbar: the box cannot add Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos or HDMI features that the rest of your system cannot pass.

Common limits and fixes
The picture is not 4K or HDR
Confirm that the display itself supports 4K and the HDR format you want. Then check the HDMI cable, receiver or switch, and the title or app. Connect Apple TV directly to the display to isolate an intermediate device, and review the video-format settings after the physical connection is known to work.
Dolby Atmos is missing
Verify that the title and app provide Atmos, that the television or receiver and soundbar support it, and that the HDMI path can carry it. Built-in television speakers may not reproduce Atmos even when the television accepts an Atmos signal.
The remote controls Apple TV but not the television
Check whether the television or receiver is configured for HDMI-CEC, or run the IR setup for the equipment. Make sure the IR sensor is not blocked. Volume and power behavior can differ by brand and model.

Move the router or access point closer, reduce obstructions, or use Gigabit Ethernet with the 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet configuration. Ethernet changes the connection between Apple TV and the local network; it does not increase the speed of an internet service beyond that service’s limits.
Bottom line for buyers
Apple TV 4K is best understood as a tvOS computer for a television: the A15 Bionic hardware supplies decoding, storage, networking and HDMI output, while tvOS supplies apps, accounts, profiles, Siri, AirPlay, Home features and accessibility controls. The Siri Remote adds touch navigation, voice input and basic television or receiver control. Select the 64GB Wi‑Fi model for a straightforward wireless setup; choose 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet when wired networking, extra storage or Thread support matters. In every case, plan for a separate HDMI cable and verify that your display and audio equipment support the 4K, HDR and Dolby formats you expect.
