Buy the Apple TV 4K (4th generation) if you are buying new and can accept its $299 U.S. price. Apple announced this model on October 13, 2026, with store availability beginning November 13, 2026. It comes only as a 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet configuration and adds the A19 chip, Wi‑Fi 7, hands-free Siri microphones, a dedicated AV1 decoder, and new HomePod mini 2 surround features.
A discounted Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) is still sensible for ordinary streaming. Choose its 64GB version for the lowest cost when Wi‑Fi is sufficient; choose the 128GB version when you need Gigabit Ethernet or Thread networking. Storage is therefore not the only difference between the two 3rd-generation models.

Quick answer: which Apple TV 4K should you buy?
Your best choice depends less on raw storage than on networking, smart-home plans, Siri control and gaming needs.
| Model | Storage | Network hardware | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K (4th generation) | 128GB | Wi‑Fi 7, Gigabit Ethernet, Thread | New buyers, HomePod surround systems, hands-free Siri, AV1 playback and heavier gaming |
| Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) | 64GB | Wi‑Fi only | Lowest-cost streaming when discounted |
| Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) | 128GB | Wi‑Fi, Gigabit Ethernet and Thread | Discounted buyers who need wired networking or Thread |
If you already own a 3rd-generation Apple TV 4K, keep it for normal streaming unless you specifically want the 4th-generation features. Both generations support the same maximum viewing resolution and HDR support, so the newer model is not a resolution upgrade.

What the Apple TV 4K (4th generation) adds
A19 performance and AV1 decoding
Apple says the A19 chip delivers up to 50 percent faster CPU performance and up to twice the GPU performance compared with the previous generation. Those are Apple’s maximum comparative figures, not a guaranteed improvement in every app or game. The chip also includes a dedicated AV1 decoder, which matters if your media library or future streaming services use AV1 video extensively.
For a viewer who mainly watches established streaming apps, the faster processor may be difficult to notice after playback starts. It becomes more relevant when launching demanding games, switching among apps, or using software that can take advantage of the newer graphics hardware.
Hands-free Siri from the television
The 4th-generation box has three far-field microphones. That lets you speak to Siri without first pressing a button on the remote. This is the clearest day-to-day convenience upgrade for people who frequently search by voice, control playback from across the room or use Apple TV as part of a smart-home setup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Hands-free microphones are a hardware feature of the new model. Buying the older box and adding a different remote does not provide the same direct voice-control behavior.
Find My support for the Siri Remote
The new Siri Remote adds Find My support with Precision Finding and a sound feature. If remotes regularly disappear between sofa cushions, locating the remote can be more useful than a modest processor improvement. Apple also sells the new Siri Remote separately, and it works with Apple TV 4K, so a remote-only upgrade is an option for many 3rd-generation owners.

Four-speaker HomePod mini 2 surround mode
Apple describes a four-speaker surround configuration that combines Apple TV 4K (4th generation) with HomePod mini 2 speakers. The speakers automatically calibrate timing and levels according to their positions. This is aimed at buyers planning a coordinated speaker system rather than someone using television speakers or a conventional soundbar.
If that surround arrangement is part of your plan, buy the 4th-generation Apple TV 4K. The 3rd-generation device does not provide the new model’s stated four-speaker HomePod mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApple TV 4K storage: is 64GB or 128GB better?
On the 4th generation, there is no storage decision: Apple sells one 128GB configuration. You cannot choose a cheaper 64GB edition of that model.
The 3rd-generation choice is more complicated. Its 64GB model is Wi‑Fi only, while its 128GB model adds Gigabit Ethernet and Thread. Consequently, paying for 128GB is often a networking and smart-home decision, not simply a way to install twice as many apps.
When 64GB is enough
- You mainly stream rather than maintain a large collection of downloaded games or media.
- Your router provides reliable Wi‑Fi in the room where the Apple TV is installed.
- You do not need Thread for compatible smart-home accessories.
- The 64GB model is substantially cheaper than available 128GB stock.
The 64GB model still supports the Apple TV 4K platform and the ordinary streaming use for which the device is commonly purchased. The trade-off is fixed hardware: it has no Ethernet port and no Thread networking.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
When 128GB is the better 3rd-generation buy
- You want a wired connection to a router, switch or mesh node.
- Your smart-home plan requires Thread networking built into the Apple TV.
- You expect to install more demanding games or a larger set of apps.
- The price difference is small because the model is discounted.
Do not buy the 3rd-generation 128GB solely because you assume it is faster. The extra storage does not by itself change the processor. Its practical advantages are capacity, Gigabit Ethernet and Thread.
Do you need Ethernet on Apple TV 4K?
Ethernet is not mandatory. A strong, stable Wi‑Fi connection is sufficient for streaming, and the 3rd-generation 64GB model is designed for Wi‑Fi-only use. Wired networking becomes valuable when the television is close to a network jack, Wi‑Fi signal quality is inconsistent, several people stream or game at once, or you want to remove wireless interference from the playback path.
Choose Ethernet when reliability matters more than convenience
- High-interference rooms: Dense apartments, multiple nearby networks and crowded wireless channels can cause stalls or inconsistent performance.
- Long-term fixed installation: A wall-mounted television or media cabinet rarely moves, so running one cable can provide a dependable connection for years.
- Local network use: Streaming from a home server or moving large game downloads benefits from a predictable wired link, although actual speed still depends on the rest of your network.
- Smart-home requirements: Thread is included with the 3rd-generation 128GB and 4th-generation models, not the 3rd-generation 64GB model.
Choose Wi‑Fi-only when the installation is simple
If your router is nearby, your existing Apple TV streams without buffering and you have no Thread requirement, Ethernet may add cost and cable clutter without improving what you watch. Wi‑Fi 7 on the 4th-generation model is a newer wireless standard, but your actual result depends on the router, distance, walls and broadband service.
4th generation versus 3rd generation: feature-by-feature
| Decision factor | 4th generation | 3rd generation 64GB | 3rd generation 128GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storage | 128GB only | 64GB | 128GB |
| Wireless networking | Wi‑Fi 7 | Wi‑Fi | Wi‑Fi |
| Wired networking | Gigabit Ethernet | None | Gigabit Ethernet |
| Thread | Yes | No | Yes |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 6 | Previous-generation specification | Previous-generation specification |
| Processor | A19 | Previous-generation chip | Previous-generation chip |
| Hands-free microphones | Three far-field microphones | Not included | Not included |
| Four-speaker HomePod mini 2 surround mode | Supported as described by Apple | Not included in the new-model feature set | Not included in the new-model feature set |
| Maximum viewing resolution and HDR | Same maximum resolution and HDR support as 3rd generation | Supported | Supported |
The 4th-generation network and Bluetooth details above come from comparative specifications, while Apple’s release announcement supplies the A19, microphone, remote and HomePod features. The 3rd-generation store and support specifications confirm 4K Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos and HDMI compatibility.
Should you upgrade from the Apple TV 4K (3rd generation)?
Keep your current box if streaming is your priority
For ordinary streaming, the 3rd-generation Apple TV 4K remains capable. It supports the same maximum viewing resolution and HDR support as the 4th generation, so replacing it will not create a sharper maximum output by itself. Keep it when apps open normally, your network is stable and you are satisfied with the remote.

Upgrade for a specific new capability
- Four-speaker HomePod mini 2 system: The new surround configuration requires the 4th-generation feature set.
- Hands-free Siri: Three far-field microphones let you address the television without picking up the remote.
- AV1 playback: The dedicated decoder is relevant to AV1-heavy libraries or services that can use hardware decoding.
- Demanding games: Apple’s stated CPU and GPU gains provide more headroom for workloads that use them.
- Remote finding: Precision Finding and a sound feature address a lost-remote problem directly.
If the only issue is a missing or worn remote, buy the separate Siri Remote rather than replacing a working 3rd-generation box.
Siri AI availability and regional limits
Apple says Siri AI is offered as a beta on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later). Initial English availability is listed for the United States, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Availability can change by region and over time, so buyers outside those markets should not treat the feature as guaranteed.
This software availability means a supported older Apple TV may receive Siri AI where offered; hands-free Siri microphones remain a 4th-generation hardware distinction. Do not confuse the two features when deciding whether an upgrade is necessary.

Apple’s store listing says Apple TV 4K supports 4K Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos. It works with HD or UHD televisions over HDMI and requires a broadband connection. Apple’s support specifications also list Dolby Atmos and compatibility with HD and UHD televisions with HDMI.

HDMI and USB‑C cables are sold separately on Apple’s store listing. Include the appropriate cable in your setup plan rather than assuming one is in the box.
How to choose in five steps
- Set your purchase date. The 4th-generation model was announced October 13, 2026, and store availability begins November 13, 2026. If you need a device before that date, compare available 3rd-generation stock instead.
- Set your budget. The 4th-generation Apple TV 4K costs $299 in the United States. Compare that with the actual discounted price of the 3rd-generation model, not its former list price.
- Decide whether you need a cable. Choose a model with Gigabit Ethernet if you require wired networking. That means the 4th generation or 3rd-generation 128GB; the 3rd-generation 64GB has Wi‑Fi only.
- Check your smart-home plan. If Thread is required, exclude the 3rd-generation 64GB model.
- Check your feature priorities. Select the 4th generation for hands-free Siri, the new remote-finding functions, four-speaker HomePod mini 2 surround mode, AV1 decoding or heavier gaming workloads. Otherwise, choose the discounted 3rd-generation model that meets your network needs.
Setup checklist
- Confirm that the television has an available HDMI input and that your broadband service is active.
- Obtain an HDMI cable; Apple’s store listing states that cables are sold separately.
- For a wired installation, connect the Apple TV’s Gigabit Ethernet port to your router or switch before setup. For Wi‑Fi, have the network name and password ready.
- Connect power and HDMI, select the matching HDMI input on the television and follow the on-screen setup.
- Sign in with your Apple Account and install only the apps and games you use. This keeps the available storage focused on your actual needs.
- If using HomePod speakers, place them in their intended positions and complete Apple’s automatic timing and level calibration for the supported four-speaker arrangement.
- Test Siri from your normal seating position. On the 4th generation, the far-field microphones are intended for hands-free requests; on older models, use the remote.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Paying for 128GB without needing its bundled hardware
On the 3rd generation, 128GB also brings Ethernet and Thread. If you only want inexpensive streaming over dependable Wi‑Fi, the 64GB model may be the better value when the discount is meaningful.
Assuming the 4th generation increases maximum picture resolution
It does not. The newer model keeps the same maximum viewing resolution and HDR support. Upgrade for its processor, networking, microphones, remote features, AV1 decoder or HomePod mode instead.

Buying before checking availability
The 4th-generation store date is November 13, 2026. On October 20, 2026, it has been announced but is not yet at its stated store-availability date. A discounted 3rd-generation unit is the practical immediate option if you need a box now.
Forgetting the cable
Apple lists HDMI and USB‑C cables separately. Verify which cable your installation requires before checkout.
Bottom line
Buy the Apple TV 4K (4th generation) 128GB for a new system when $299 in the United States fits your budget and you value hands-free Siri, Wi‑Fi 7, Ethernet, Thread, the A19 performance, AV1 decoding or the four-speaker HomePod mini 2 surround mode. Buy a discounted 3rd-generation 64GB for straightforward Wi‑Fi streaming, or its 128GB version when Ethernet or Thread matters. Keep a 3rd-generation Apple TV 4K that already meets your streaming needs; its maximum resolution and HDR support remain competitive, and the 4th generation is an upgrade in features and headroom rather than picture resolution.
